  • Back in the canal town of Stone, we get our engine taken out of our narrowboat in order to get the repair done to our travelpack generator. While it’s out, we take the opportunity to clean and repaint the engine bay and bilge.

As I watched this episode, I was quickly reminded of the last Vlog and how some people were wondering if you were capable of piloting the narrowboat and working the locks. You seemed to do very well bring the boat to a stop at the engine repair shop. Again I saw you working the locks and then of course the great job mucking out the engine bay and repainting it. It was done very professionally. I do think you more than know what you are doing. Ryan is lucky to have you as an equal partner. You two make a great team. Happy motoring and as always, stay safe

Thank you! We’re a good team, we do enjoy being together and doing stuff together. I (Maggie) really don’t mind getting into the engine bay and doing stuff as I like to know how things work and I’m a bit of a perfectionist and like to do jobs myself so that I know they’re done to my liking! 😅

It struck me early in the video that someone had fudged a repair in mounting the alternator 2 out of 5 bolts etc. Curious as to why there was wood and MDF in the bay and am wondering if it was to deaden the vibration caused by the mis alignment of the prop shaft.Having the engine out was the only solution to getting the job properly. Witness the smoothness afterwards. Looking at what they did, and needed to do, that was a very fair invoice and like others loved the handwritten bill. As for the cleaning and repainting seriously impressed Maggie & Ryan. Are there no end your talents?

    • @NarrowboatChef

Haha, thanks, we do have many talents! Most learned because we needed to! 🤣 The engine does seem to run smoother now with the realignment, less vibration in the boat.

I would have to agree they treated you well and did necessary repairs. I know it’s expensive but when you get repairs done by well skilled people it’s worth every bit in the long run, saving trouble and expense down the road. They know their jobs and they know what these beauties need to keep them reliable. I too believe as far as I can tell with all the repairs they did, even though costly, it was quite fair. And I don’t think is easy for honest repairmen to have to increase the bill, but after all, in the end, it’s their skill and judgement you are paying for.

My wife and I love watching the English narrow boats. 1st thing, well done on the engine bay, and paint job. The repair yard sounds like a great place. 2nd thing, take some advice from an older and wiser man, please stop over talking your wife. Let her finish, then you can add when she is done. Just be respectful, of each other. It goes a long way. I will add this, the sarcastic remarks will get old after awhile too. Any way, be safe and hold each other as the most important person in your life. We wish you all the best.

Having the engine re-aligned is a Really big thing, And you noticed the better running and reduced vibration right away. From personal experience painting rusty steel or steel exposed to the weather, I have found that wiping the steel down with Kerosene will help an oil based paint adhere better. ( It helps displace any moisture left on the surface)

You’ll not regret having the job done right. Your gear box, propeller shaft cutlass and packing will all last longer with the proper alignment. Your boat will probably be smoother while under way.
In fact because the generator is so high up the vibrations from the misalignment of the engine to propeller shaft could have caused the problem to begin with. Because any vibration gets amplified the further away from the centerline of the engine. So it was all a sound investment.
    Nice job painting!
    Cheers!
    Jeremy

    • @NarrowboatChef
      @NarrowboatChef  3 роки тому +1

Yes, that was also the conclusion the engineers came to. Pleased that it’s all aligned properly now and it does seem to have made a slight improvement on the way the engine runs, less vibration through the boat. 😊

Narrow boats can become a money pit, if you are unlucky & get a bad one or one that has been botched up. The price of repairs seemed exceptionally good, what with having all the welding done & re-alignments of the shafts-engine position. Had that not been done you may very well have been looking at a lot more expense further down the line when the prop shaft bearings would have been damaged, so all in all a very good job well done.

Very often I think of mechanical maintenance bills as being well OTT but I think you've had a real good service from the boatyard. On the face of it, it seems good - as you've said but if the engine hadn't been sufficiently well aligned with the prop shaft, there's the potential for early wear on the gland bearings risking premature leaks. I'm guessing they've fitted new engine mountings and done a proper job there - so the rubber mountings work properly in minimising engine vibration transmission to the boat - and it looks like they've either had to make parts, get them made or ordered - so, overall an excellent job.
Give it a year's worth of running and then check belt tensions again once they've run in. The 12V alternator should be fine but the 240V alternator belt being a small multi-V belt, correct tension will be a little more critical. Especially as you're using it to run loads like a washing machine.

It's easier to get a good finish without making a mess with a small brush. Yes it takes longer, but to do as well with bigger brushes takes a lot of practice.

Amazingly great deal on all that work! Looks like a great place to take an ailing boat, knowledgeable and competent workers making serviceable for a reasonable price. Here in Florida that work performed at Port Canaveral would be an easy $3000...

Well you can get on with other jobs while the motor is out , Paint under it . Apply hearers in the engine bay to dry it ,then the cockpit floor needs a paint she’s a good worker does he to, , , so what’s the big panic for an engine , leave them to do there job ,parts will only be holding them up , save your power and enjoy , boats have to be worked on to be perfect keep going

Unusual for a Kubota diesel engine to have problems let alone one that requires removal. I can only recall one failure in the last 15 years which required removal from a machine and we have over 200 currently Kubota powered and have sold on hundreds that got too old for the hire fleet over the years.

Ours is a Beta Marine engine and it wasn’t actually an issue with the engine itself but rather the generator that is mounted to the engine. Due to the location of the generator, the engine had to come out to allow them access to the area that needed the repair.

You need to buy a bigger paint brush, I can’t believe that your still using that tiny brush. Thank goodness you can still live in your boat while the engine is out. Fantastic job cleaning and painting the engine bay just like new😂😂 it’s like having a new engine.❤️👍🏻

I am always in awe of people who can use chains and a lift to remove engines from anywhere :) The repairs might have cost more than envisaged, but that was a job well done, including painting the engine bay etc.. Maggie, as Ryan has asthma, could you please invest in a respirator to protect yourself - one of the kind where you can fit different filters. Bum up, head down in an engine bay with paint is not a good idea. The outlook for Covid in the UK looks poor. I hope you get to do a bit of boating before your winter accommodation beckons, cheers Deb :)

Usually when mechanics see ppl that don’t know a lot about engines they will charge you more because you can’t say anything. With cars is the same thing. But you have no choice. It is what it is at the end, at least you can wait for the winter without worring about your engine😉

As you have a cruiser stern rain water runs down your gunwhales and into engine bay.
    To stop this
Weld deflector rods at angles on each side of the boat to take the rain water into the canal.
