I'm an architect and have used Sub-Zero units since the 1970's for clients.
I installed a Sub-Zero in my own kitchen in 1984 and only replaced it with the same new model two years ago.
I'd say 35 years of excellent service is worth the cost!

I think it depends on whether you value the lack of hassle above all else. A 36" Sub-Zero in Canada starts at $15659 MRSP. The average fridge lasts about 10 years. You could buy a typical $2500 fridge three times to get similar reliability over 30 years, and still come in at half the price of the Sub-Zero.
I'm not saying this is ideal---it is far more wasteful to toss out 3 appliances instead of 1. But for average consumer, Sub-Zero's excellent longevity isn't enough to constitute a good value. It's a luxury product for people who don't need to worry about trivial details such as how much their appliances or vacation homes cost.

@@Nse204 The average new fridge has sub-quality parts manufactured in China. They break down within a year or so. My reliable 17 yr old fridge, a 48” US made GE Monogram, had American made compressor/electronics. It never broke down and had similar options to the SubZero in its day. GE is now made in China as are many of the others, very poor quality. SubZero appears to be reliable.
When a fridge breaks down, it’s a huge hassle. Food spoilage, finding a tech who can fix it, sourcing parts for the unit, getting a reasonable date for repair, and making the unit whole again without call backs. Some people wait weeks to get their fridge back up and running.

@@Nse204 You omit that a SubZero adds substantial value to any home, and also is vastly more environmentally friendly than throwing away 6 other fridges. In the NYC area a SubZero is at most 2-3 times the cheaper models, which usually have no drawers; we have four. And they just run, year after year.

29 years later and our Subzero is still going strong. Only the ice maker failed because we took out the bucket when we turned off the water to it for an extended period. Ice built up and wrecked the motor. Should have left it in. That was one repair call in 29 years. I know it will fail sometime but I’d say we got our money’s worth.

I really love these videos. I know you don't sell Hestan but would love your opinion as to how the Sub-Zero matches up with Hestan. They seem to have the same/similar features and the best thing is that Hestan comes in 11 beautiful colors besides the stainless steel. 💜💜💜

We don't have the Hestan refrigeration currently, but mixing up the color of a fridge with custom panels or custom color is a great way to make a statement. We are carrying Hestan grills, and love the color options there though

My 500 series SubZero was installed in 1995. It still working good but I do get buildup of ice beginning at the drip tube and building out sustainably requiring me to chop it out. I will be redoing kitchen in the next 2 months and will use another Subzero for sure. BTW, I’m told there’s a 3-5 month wait for delivery.

We have had a Pro 48 for 7 years and it has started giving us the 40 EC error for the past year. We reset the unit as per manufacturer's instructions or by turning the frig off and on from the breaker. Doing the former, the error can reoccur within 3-7 days whereas doing the latter, the error may not occur for 2-6 weeks. Service has come out and told us there is nothing they can do without having the frig actively in error which I can't do because it takes them several days to come out and I don't want to burnout the compressor. Love this refrigerator, but I am getting frustrated with this issue. I expected better for the price and reputation.

We bought the largest one door GE, in 1992, no frills. I didn't want the narrow 2 door ones. Had an ice maker set up, but we never got around to istalling the ice maker. We replaced it with a newer GE before we sold the house a few months ago. It was still running. I wander if the new GE's would last that long.

Our SubZero lasted 22 years before dying this year. After two repair attempts the compressor basically was going. Replacing it, we were warned the new units last only 10 to 12 years as they as with everyone else have cut costs. So we plan to enjoy it as long as we can until the compressor goes again.

@@YaleAppliance1 This was our local appliance chain called Atiorio in CT. I asked the installer (also their repair person) how long on average it lasts. He said if I maintain it by cleaning the internal compressor grill every 6 months like I do for dust, I am guaranteed to get 10 to 12 years of reliable service. After that, it just depends on the unit. My parents in FL also own SubZero and their last unit lasted 14 years before the compressor went. They just bought a new one three years ago so we will see how long that lasts as well as mine.

This was my question because a lot of old appliances have ran for 15-20 years. Once they die they are replaced with stuff way more expensive and they break in under 5 years. Complete trash. So I hear people saying sub zero will last 20 years. Well yeah I’m sure they do but are the new ones built to the same standards or are they cheap like everything else.

@@YaleAppliance1 yeah, but are they considered as elite as sub-zero? In refrigeration, nothing can touch SZ. No other brand has come close to the reliability of SZ, which is why they have the status they currently have. I'm just trying to figure out if Wolf is considered to be in the same elite tier with cooking, or if they're more comparable to other high end cooking brands. Also, it's so common for quality to suffer during a buyout, so I wonder if there was anything like that after the Wolf buy out in 2000. I certainly would hope a company like SZ wouldn't let quality go down the drain, but sometimes it's just accidental.

    • @YaleAppliance1

Wolf is elite in cooking. Service and reliability have not suffered since the acquisition. There are few others to consider if looking for the "best" cooking products. Depending on the types of products you are considering for your space, other brands to consider would be Gaggenau and Miele.
