From Soft really outdid themselves with this boss fight. It ranks among my all time favorites. I did not expect it to end like this when I fought her and I’m glad I discovered it on my own. It was so exhilarating.
I think it’s also notable how she just used her “sweetings” as weapons, or how easily she dismissed them. You can see chandeliers fall on them, or when she uses them to try to kill you. Crazy.
I don't think she is concerned with the death of her sweetings, because she'll just have them be reborn. Whether it be as gravestones, or fresh "sweetings". but it's quite clear that Rennala isn't in a sane state of mind anymore. It's quite sad
@@AB-jt4rs 2 years later but anyway, it should be noted that in Rennala's first phase, she legit isn't really even trying to fight you. It's mostly her "sweetings" doing the work and "fighting" for her. Ranni casts the illusional Rennala in phase 2 and I think it's pretty damn sweet she cares about her mother that much.
Her last words give me sadness chills. Her daughter has given her a final bout of lucidity, and realizing this she uses her final moments to encourage Ranni and wish her well
My buddy and I were playing parallel to each other the other day; he was a little further back than I was at this point, and I had just made it to this boss. He knew absolutely nothing that was going on. But as soon as the second phase hit, and she transformed into a small moon, I shouted, "She turned into the moon! Sokka -- !" He responded with, "That's rough, buddy."
I will never forget the absolute horror I felt the first time I fought Renalla. The scholars scared the shit out of me, I didn't know how to break her barrier, I died so many times. Then I summoned some dude and he yolo'd around the room cutting up scholars like he was some deranged psycho in the middle of a schizophrenic break.
This boss fight is a crazy mixture of scholar of mensis and the One Reborn from bloodborne - it reminds me a bit, but in a crazier way. Edit: Ah! And Rom, the Vacuous spider.
What I love about the first phase is Rennala's blank stare, you can see her as she's completely gone, she's an empty shell and when you beat her and then Ranni's spell kicks in, when the Rennala she once was appears, you see her determination and the power it has, it will not be one of the most difficult bosses, it will even be easy, but seeing how the whole scene changes with its magic, how it can summon a dragon or a troll gives you to understand the power as a sorceress, how powerful what was.
0:35 when i had this cutscene, my character was wearing the royal remains helm. So in this shot there was just a skeleton with some decomposed skin and hair looking back at her which i thought looked pretty funny.
I just can't get over how much I love the music in the first phase! Such a profound blend of emotions making it mysterious and creepy, yet sad and forlorn. I don't know much about her lore yet but I'm assuming that Culver is her unborn child? That thing looks like some kind of Lithopedion.
When Radagon left Rennala and sent her into deep despair, his last gift to her was the Amber egg she's holding, which allows her to rebirth people, so she now keeps rebirthing her "sweetings" over and over with that egg.

For those wondering. She offers respecs and you use larval tears to do it, which they are fairly rare. Easiest way to get them that I know of is the vendor in the first underground area you go to in east limgrave. About half way through the area there is a tower with 2 guys on it and you follow the path at the top to the vendor Besides the vendor. The only other tears I know of are from stronger enemies that most avoid even at higher levels. Like one drops from one of the bears in that east limgrave area
Did they changed it? I've had no memory of collecting any larval tears and I've changed my build like 4 times So I thought I could do it whenever I wanted
I've really enjoyed the subtlety of this game's implied story and culture. Pondering the significance of an enormous statue built in tribute to some king, queen. warrior, sorcerer, etc is a regular occurrence. Loved the fight, the first phase was a little too deacons-y for my like, but it wasn't anything offensive. The second phase was balls to the walls, pontiff combos with spells and summons that range from negligible to the Bloodhound Knight and Agheel. Yet everything is perfectly balanced out, the summons aren't too overbearing, you can stagger her, her spells are all Farley easy to dodge and a few can leave her wide open for seconds.
@@nikkikado4079 I made this comment after my first bout with her, was a little star struck by the beauty and magic (intended) of it all, still love the fight, but she is nothing compared to pontiff, but I will standby that she can shotgun her spells out at the speed of Sully at times.

Phase 1: one of the creepiest weirdest From Soft boss fights
Phase 2: one of the most beautiful boss fights.
Phase 1: medieval columbine
Phase 2: Anime as fuck
To me, phase 1 seemed similar to the Deacons of the Deep in Dark Souls 3. Like you gotta find the "sweetings" who keep Rennala's protective seal intact whereas in DS3 you're looking for the boss hiding in one of the deacon's bodies
This was the first boss I came across that I had mixed feelings about killing (especially in the second phase). The whole battle felt weirdly.... beautiful. Definitely one of the most memorable battles of the game.
You dont kill rennala. She becomes an npc that allows you to reset your stats and change your appearance

I think it’s also notable how she just used her “sweetings” as weapons, or how easily she dismissed them. You can see chandeliers fall on them, or when she uses them to try to kill you. Crazy.
Their lives don't matter to her since she can just rebirth them.
I don't think she is concerned with the death of her sweetings, because she'll just have them be reborn. Whether it be as gravestones, or fresh "sweetings".
but it's quite clear that Rennala isn't in a sane state of mind anymore. It's quite sad
@@AB-jt4rs
2 years later but anyway, it should be noted that in Rennala's first phase, she legit isn't really even trying to fight you. It's mostly her "sweetings" doing the work and "fighting" for her. Ranni casts the illusional Rennala in phase 2 and I think it's pretty damn sweet she cares about her mother that much.
This was the most beautiful boss fight I've ever experienced. I was not expecting that 2nd phase to be that awesome.

Her last words give me sadness chills. Her daughter has given her a final bout of lucidity, and realizing this she uses her final moments to encourage Ranni and wish her well
And this is all coming from an illusion of Rennala; even as a spectral being, Rennala is still wishing her daughter well in her quest.

oh god not rom
What I love about the first phase is Rennala's blank stare, you can see her as she's completely gone, she's an empty shell and when you beat her and then Ranni's spell kicks in, when the Rennala she once was appears, you see her determination and the power it has, it will not be one of the most difficult bosses, it will even be easy, but seeing how the whole scene changes with its magic, how it can summon a dragon or a troll gives you to understand the power as a sorceress, how powerful what was.

Probably on the top 10 coolest bosses of any souls game. Moon and sea are very well known things at this point, I would even say kinda overused/expected, but this was still so wonderful. Such a memorable fight.
海上生明月,天涯共此时 ( poem from Tang Dynasty, Zhang Jiu Ling)
A bright moon is born above the sea, we share this view though separated by thousands of Li (Chinese measurement, around 500 m)
Its true that this is a classic, but only good things can become classics, and this one has been around for thousands of years.
L + Ratio + you have no maidens + you're tarnished + touch grace
For those wondering. She offers respecs and you use larval tears to do it, which they are fairly rare. Easiest way to get them that I know of is the vendor in the first underground area you go to in east limgrave. About half way through the area there is a tower with 2 guys on it and you follow the path at the top to the vendor
Besides the vendor. The only other tears I know of are from stronger enemies that most avoid even at higher levels. Like one drops from one of the bears in that east limgrave area
They Arent that rare Later on in the Game. I have 10 on my Char rn without ever buying one
theres also one you pick up from a body in Village of the Albinaurics.
I got like 13 on my first gameplay
Did they changed it? I've had no memory of collecting any larval tears and I've changed my build like 4 times
So I thought I could do it whenever I wanted
I've really enjoyed the subtlety of this game's implied story and culture. Pondering the significance of an enormous statue built in tribute to some king, queen. warrior, sorcerer, etc is a regular occurrence.
