Nice to see an old J-Car brought back from (nearly) the grave. Obviously you put a good bit of sweat, labor, and money into it, but still ended up with an economical car that should be in good shape for many miles to come. Nice work!
Ha, I've only ever heard my parents use "piss-poor" as a description before. I'm almost relieved to hear that this Cavalier's gasket 1) was leaking oil badly and 2) can be cork. So, I'm not misremembering what I was told went wrong with the one I used to have. So glad you've been able to extend this one's life.
The mats, with 40 years of gound in dirt, came out amazing. Not at all critical of the technique, but somethings that might make it easier next time is a cheesy $8 brush that attaches to a drill, and when the mats are that bad, you can also just power wash them if you want. To reiterate, I don't think you would've gotten better results, that was amazing, but might be easier,
My ex girlfriend's parents had one of these. It was a two tone white and rust. It's the car i did my drivers test in and got my license. It was an eye sore but i ran like a champ
Somebody got their money's worth and them some on those wiper blades. I had no idea some of the 80s 2.0s were sourced from Opel. I learned something today!
Jay, Thank you so much for another awesome video. Every time I watch your stuff it feels like i'm visiting with a friend. Thanks again, and congratulations on all the new subscribers. They are well deserved!
Loving that Cavalier. Back in the day (I'm 43) my Dad had an 84 Sunbird wagon with the 1.8 and that was a workhorse of a car. So glad this one got saved!
4:57 if you’re good with an exacto knife you could try finding some gasket felt, or lacking that go to a craft or dollar store and pick up a cheap cork board. At least it’s not a head or intake gasket where it’s more critical for precision
Absolutely brilliant video jay I had a cavalier here in the UK badged as a vauxhall cavalier cd they are still a fantastic classic car here in the UK brilliant enjoy her
Tough little car. My wife had 96 or 97 Sunfire (a gen or two past your Cavalier). The engine was a bit crude but otherwise it was a great. Got rid of it when the family grew to needing three child seats/boosters. 😅
My first car. 1982 Cavalier 2dr. 2barrel carb on a 1.8L engine. 4 speed manual. Manual steering, manual windows, am radio. No delay wipers, no cruise. About the only thing it had was power brakes. Same color interior as yours with the door panels doing the exact same thing. You could just scratch the top parts with a fingernail and it would flake off.
Rock Auto has the mounts - cheap. Well, the part price is cheap, they gouge on shipping. They are really pretty handy when it comes to the 1980's GM cars.
Idk if you do this in the video yet, but it's a miracle it came up, I was just thinking about how you could shift a 1st gen cavalier from drive to reverse (and vice versa) at WOT at highway speeds and not break the transmission. For $300, keep that car forever, and just keep replacing the tires every hundred times you do it, it will make memories for sure
The most impressive thing about this whole video is how well those factory mats cleaned up! Thats a badass cleaning solution/machine right there! Sweet little car, im glad someone cares and appreciates these 80s GM cars. Especially a little disposable (Jay's words, not mine 😅). J car such as this..
I feel ya! Been buying up parts for my first year 82 Cutlass Ciera Brougham two door.....Its all several days out....Happy to see you keeping the ole girl going though!
Cool - I had an 85 in 1991 I bought all rusted out for $500. Gave it a tractor paint roller paint job that fall - It threw a rod the next summer so we put a junkyard engine in. my sister rear ended a brand new Volvo 2 weeks later and that was that.
You don't like the smell of PB Blaster? Try the taste! I made the mistake of using it on the door latch of a 1950's fridge == PB penetrated all my food for months! Great vid as usual
Yeah, you'll learn the hard way that food easily gets contaminated in a fridge. Lol. It's wild how that works when you get to thinking about it. I assume smell travels through the coldness and circulates everywhere. Suppose that's another reason why some shade trees don't like putting certain automotive parts in the freezer to join two parts together. All that lead and other non food grade piecs that make the parts. I think some certain parts use lead anyway... maybe a little bit.
Looks great, dude! Some day, you've gotta do a car meet-up with the other 1st gen Cavalier furballs up in Wisconsin! I think someone else also has a Cimarron, or maybe one of them has a cav and a cim? Not 100% sure. I honestly would love to find a 1st gen Cavalier. I can't find one for sale in good shape ANYWHERE. Even the last-gen cavaliers are starting to disappear from the roads!
The GM "122 series" push rod 4 cyl. engines were from Chevy, as someone else posted. Sized from 1.8 to 2.2L. The car mags were always putting it down, asking for imported ones. The OHC 1.8 in Sunbirds was Opel design. The 122 lasted until 2002, replaced by Ecotec OHC.
Hi Jay, they use to sell those cars in the UK back in the 80s, they were called Vauxhall Cavaliers in the UK. They are a very rare sight nowadays on the UK roads. You could get a sporty version called an SRI, it had a 1.8 fuel injected engine, cool cars!
I worked at a GM dealership 1989-1990. Nobody there would have considered a square body Cavalier as a car to drive any distance back then. It is wild to see one this clean!
At least you have the chevy 2.0 liter engine. The Brazilian made opel 2.0 liter overhead cam engine is probably hard to get parts for now. Those ohc engines are more predominately in the sunbird up until 94, and the olds firenza as well as a few skyhawk models.
🤦😤 that car brought back a lot of memories lol my partner at the time back in 1996 had the same exact car lol it over heated and we would have to crank the heater in a 90 degree summer day sitting in traffic in Boston. The drivers side door was taped together at the bottom with duct tape. The tires were so unbalanced it shook like crazy at 40 mph. I asked him if he was ever going to get anything fixed on this pile of caca lol I called it The Chevy cavalyay sports car lol I hated that car 😂
Looks like great progress has been made on this time capsule and for having a hard time finding rare pieces for it I’d have to say that you can start with a good starting point and end up with something you can be proud of,I like tinkering around with stuff and get my paws dirty turning wrenches but leaving paw prints on something just shows that it’s something I’ve worked on with my own 2 paws but I do get a few knots in my tails if I get stuck on something and cuss about it especially if I hurt my paw causing it to bleed from stupidity lol, I love working with tools and my paws 🐾🖤🐾🖤🐾🖤
Cool little whip. The best way I’ve found to clean carpet and mats is to pull them out of the car, hang them up, scrub and pressure wash the hell out of them, let them drip dry in the sun. The beige carpet and mats in my ‘97 Odyssey came up a treat after doing that
Great video. That Cavalier will last you a lifetime. It's sn awesome car. I just had my valve cover gasket replaced on my 2013 Chevy Spark. $502.00. I wish you were my mechanic.
I’m sure you have noticed that the market is heating up for these old econo box’s people are paying huge amounts for old 80s cars in nice shape . Polish that baby up and fix the headliner and list it on cars and bids or Barret Jackson or eBay and someone will pay good money. You should do some videos on the other Cavalier and get it cleaned up and sold For top dollar
That's not the opel engine, it's gm I had the same car 1986, the opel is the one with over head cam 1.8lL- 2.0 L aluminum valve cover that has a timing belt.
You can make the engine mounts last for decades with one single product. Fill all the voids of the mounts with Window Weld. Another option is to fill them with poly urethane.
I have been a follower since the beginning of your channel and the cavalier wagons and well everything. This video is pretty awesome. I have two aunts and one uncle that owned these. Two of these box style wagons and one 1989 two door.
Hey Jay, I would by that car of you in a second if it wasn't for the tiny problem that I live in Sweden. Im close to Germany so getting parts for this engine would not be a big problem. Love your videos and what a nice looking car.
Bought a new one in October of 88 biggest piece of crap the dealer had it more that me was going through the lemon law to give it back and ended up totaling it with 8044 miles on it had 1 mile on it when I got it
We had a 1982 Cavalier in that color back in 1982 to 1984 and that was my stepfather company car In 1993, we had a 1986 Cavalier RS in maroon color and we had it for 3 weeks, that car was a piece of crap, it alway had power shut down after driving 10 miles,

There are so many 'throw-away' cars that I wished I had kept now. That Cavalier has a great home now. 😊

If I didn't know better I would have thought it was my dad's car with those "wipers"
I had a red four door 88 cavalier in high school. Awesome high school car. Love watching these cars come back to life.
Please keep going with this car. It would be awesome to watch you fix every single little issue. The car would be so valuable to you then.

Great job on the cavalier I think the only reason Chevy quit making cavaliers cuz they couldn't improve on an indestructible vehicle

I would've traced that gasket out for a template then found a sheet or gasket material so you can make your own if need be.

They sure did! 😂 I have to get out of the way of mopeds and bicyclist
I'm so glad I'm able to see the Cavalier come along. I remember seeing it on Facebook marketplace.
Jay thanks for fixing it up hope you service the transmission
That 2.0 OHV was developed in house by Chevrolet and started as a 1.8.It is the 1.8/2.0 OHC that was Opel designed and sourced from GM Brazil.
