    While previous hits Rū Ana Te Whenua and Kai Tangata have related to historic battles and injustices faced by their ancestors, ‘Whispers’ raises much more recent incidences of conflict - the Foreshore and Seabed Act passed in 2004; and the Trans Pacific Partnership, signed in 2016.
    “These are just a couple of examples of the government not respecting the voices of the people, especially Māori,” says guitarist and lead singer, Lewis de Jong. “Even though historic wrongs have supposedly been righted with compensation, when the same thing keeps happening it’s hard to believe there has really been a change.”
    The spoken excerpt at the beginning of the song is part of a radio interview by well-known Radio New Zealand journalist Kim Hill with Don Brash, a former leader of two right wing political parties, and current spokesperson for a lobby group set up to advocate removal of so-called ‘special privileges’ for Māori.
    “It’s kind of scary how many people share his views,” says drummer Henry de Jong. “They don’t seem to understand that the current policies are there to help redress the imbalance that was caused after over a hundred years of colonization. During that time, millions of acres of Māori land was stolen, they were excluded from voting and children were punished for speaking Māori in schools, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. That sort of thing can’t be fixed with compensation alone - it takes time and goodwill from both sides.”
    The historic film footage in the background to the video features images of the Hikoi (March) against the Foreshore and Seabed Act, which put the foreshore and seabed around the coastline of New Zealand into government ownership, even though it had never been gifted, sold by or confiscated from its traditional Māori owners. Henry and Lewis (then aged 4 and 2 respectively) were among the 40,000 people who marched on parliament to oppose the legislation.
    Also featured in the song and video are Labour MP Tariana Turia, who crossed the floor to vote against her own party on the bill; and well known Tuhoe activist Tame Iti, who was famously charged with treason for shooting the New Zealand flag.

    I've heard "Kai Tangata" and watched the video. Now, "Whispers." Alien Weaponry is THE metal band to watch. Their blend of vintage and modern metal is flawless, and the vocals from English to Maori just make the message all that more powerful and authentic. This band is already great, and the fact that they're still teenagers is exciting because of the promise of future greatness. This is the modern metal I've been waiting for. Just top notch musicianship and great vocals. I'll be spreading the word about this band for sure!

    This intro... I'm Pueblo, Azteca and Apache (Indigenous to the Americas) In college, a guy told to be thankful that our country was colonized. He said his ancestors saved my people from sleeping on the ground and they gave us electricity and running water. As if we didn't have beds in our dwellings, as if our "electricity" wasn't free from the sun and fire and our "running water" couldn't possibly have come from anywhere like clear rivers and the rain. Just because someone lives differently than you, doesn't make them any less "civilized". ✊🏾

    This band has given me a reality check, which I really appreciate. I try to live my life purely out of love, empathy, and selflessness, so when I see cultures that are mistreated by my people, it breaks my heart. I feel a deep and burning sorrow for all my black brothers and sisters here in America, but until I stumbled upon this band and noticed the similarities between the Maori people and the Native American people, I hadn't given them much thought. I almost immediately looked up Native American metal bands and saw how horrible the conditions for Native peoples are to this day. My heart goes out to all those who have suffered by the hands of my ancestors. I only hope we can do better from here on out. Keep rockin' out and fuckin' shit up. You're doing good work.

      YANKEE BASTARD Are you trolling this same comment to everyone who comments on here or...? It seems like you have some kind of personal vendetta against these kids. They are of Maori descent. Just because their skin is white doesn't mean they aren't Maori. I already replied to you in another comment thread, but I'll go ahead & share this link with you again, in case you miss it.

      @celticrocker13 6 років тому +8

      I did buy the album. And no assumption, just an analysis of the fact that I saw the same exact comment from you 3 different times. In my experience, that is considered spamming or trolling. I don't think they are hating on their European heritage. I think they are more making an analysis on their combined cultures as a whole when you factor in their other songs. And having listened to the lyrics of this song, I think it's more so about the snuffing out of certain aspects of Maori history by their current government (ie: language, religious practices, etc.), not much different than what has & is happening to the Natives here in the U.S. It's not all SJW bullshit. Just because you have a different opinion on the matter, doesn't make the other stance SJW nonsense. They never acted like the Maori weren't mighty warriors (they're song "Rū Ana Te Whenua" is literally about the battle at Pukehinahina/Gate Pa, where the Maori won against the British with 5-1 odds). And it's not that white colonized & lived there that makes them angry, it's that the Maori heritage is dying, & the current government is doing nothing to preserve any part of it. Instead, it seems they want erase part of these people's past, as if it never existed. And, even with all the horribleness there was, I think it is important to remember & be informed of that, & to keep certain aspects of it alive. I think the problem here is that you are failing to look at the whole picture painted across their various songs. Instead, you are focusing on the message in this one song, which is just a minuscule portion of a much larger painting.

      @ref4nej2 5 років тому +14

      +YANKEEBASTARD PC/SJW bullshit makes me sick, but you're off mark calling this SJW propaganda and probably haven't done your research. Unlike most natives of European colonies, the Maori were never conquered and the land is on a timed treaty, the song is about all the bullshit sneaky tactics the government tries to use to manipulate and break the treaty against the interests of the Maori people. Everyone knows the NZ gov wont willingly adhere to the treaty, this song is a fuck you to the lying bastards. If you want examples of SJW propaganda you can look no further than the NZ government itself. It self-righteously declared it can incriminate and punish people for writing arbitrarily derogatory comments on the internet. Fucking PC fascists.

    The METAL these kids are able to summon is awe inspiring and a little disturbing. This isn't the rage of a suburban teenager who doesn't like maths, it's the legacy of terrible oppression and genocide and the rage these kids are able to channel proves that history, that trauma still effects it's survivors from the second they're born.

    If it was not for this band, I would probably not have dug a little deeper into Maori history, including the dark history of my birth country (The Netherlands/Holland), which was conveniently left out from my history lessons, back when I was in school in the 90s. I guess that guilt tripping teenagers with historical wrongdoings isn't smart either, but the gap between my history books and reality turned out to be much bigger than I'd expected. More to the tune of propaganda and glorification, rather than convenient omission of crimes. But then, I've always been amazed by how many Dutch dutifully swallow propaganda, while often being convinced the country is somehow above using any of that. Anyways, thank you ALIEN WEAPONRY!

    I have to say that bands that have been coming from New Zealand and especially Australia have been making what I've been wanting to hear. A Chickasaw, or better yet a Shawnee band. (600, and 200 native speakers respectively, but both declining at an alarming rate) If they wanted to keep people intrigued, and wanting to learn these , and others like them then something along these lines would be an excellent idea.
      I am unaware of the sound of the "sound" of the Shawnee language, but am fimilier enough with Chickasaw to make me believe that it wouldn't make for the best metal lyrics. Of course, I haven't ever heard anyone try it, and there is in fact only one way to know.
