@@caseyb1346 you forgot Celtic culture. Celtic roots rock started the folk rock and folk metal movement. That's probably the most easily translated to rock and metal of all. Rock and metal has some ancestry from traditional Irish and Scottish music. That's why music from Celtic cultures is the most adaptable of all to rock and metal.
As a Young Maori in the early 90s I got more shit for liking heavy metal over hip hop than any gay person got for being gay at the time it felt. I honestly thought there was something wrong with me. If I had that genre back then I would have had an easier time.

I always pictured North Korea's planes flying to Hawaii, Hawaii then releases it's strongest warriors to dance in circles with their lounges out but the birds dropped eggs made out of the sun.
As a Māori person myself I am so proud that these guys are bringing our native language and history to everybody all around the world because Māori people were treated like shit for a very long time. Mad respect for these guys. Peace and Love
Not to sound ignorant, but what happened to the mori exactly? While I am a huge fan of history and learning about other cultures, unfortunately, my knowledge is very limited when it comes to Pacific Islanders. Even Hawaii Natives I don't know a whole ton about.
I don't have any Maori blood, I'm mainly Norse and East African as I'm mixed, but this culture is very similar to Northern European, the best way I can describe it is: "Brutafull".
@@PiracyandDumbbells Every native culture on this planet has an asston of similarities, but we humans are dense as fuck and focus on the rather minor differences. Hell, it is to the point that most civilizations share cryptids that they came up with entirely independently. I'm not saying "There are certainly vampires/bigfoot/dragons out there" rather that we all have similar minds and similar fears.
I wish I could understand the song, however one line I have learned which is my opinion the most bad ass is "E mahi nga mahi a Tūmatauenga" which translates to "This is the will of the god of war"
Kevin 504 growing up in middle school I had a teacher that would blast metal in the morning and at the end of the day everyday and him and my best friend got me into metal

I'm not Maori but as a Iroquois the history of this song reverberates with my me as well when our 3 WarChiefs visited England... They also traded us muskets for pelts which we used to deadly effect against our enemies and the French... Dope track much respect, love for my fellow tribal people keep your heads up for the coming generations
The English could beat us neither by musket nor sheer numbers. We sat their asses down hard and taught the world trench warfare, being the first and only in British history to be overcome not by fist but by pen
I'm a Pakeha, but I'm so happy to see these guys representing Aotearoa and their Maori heritage. The Maori culture is rich and beautiful and should be represented more! ...as a metalhead, this is just great music!
If you're white, why use a Maori term to describe yourself as such? I agree all native cultures are beautiful in their unique expression and should be preserved. Creative expression like music is a great way to do it. Try to do the same for your white cultural heritage, whether it be Anglo-Saxon (Angles, Jutes, Frisians, Saxons) or different.
"Waah they're too white or Caucasian to do this.." - *Jesus, shuuutup* In New Zealand its normal and common to be half Maori or other Polynesian group. Even the 'whitest' kiwis have Polynesian blood. These boys even have family members in this vid since one of their parents is Maori. Hell, most Maori have Scottish surnames! Everybody is expected to take part in Maori culture regardless of ethnicity- we sing Maori since primary school right to high school, all boys are expected to belt out the haka and if anything, everything has been positive from NZ for these young blokes for sharing it to the world. Before you comment about their skin colour- yes they are ethnically Maori. So shut your arse and give your face a chance before dumb assumptions come out.

As a native Icelander, that would be grand to hear. Especially if the lyrics were in Hawaiian (should there be a ' in there? Apologies, but I don't know) - although, a translation of the lyrics in the lyrics booklet would be nice. Not necessary, though, I know Skálmöld (an Icelandic metal band) doesn't include translations...
I'm Italian and obviously I don't understand the Maori language. It's nice to see young musicians have respect for their origins and carry them forward through music
Hey, I get the same thing when I listen to Måneskin singing in Italian!!! I love it, but hardly understand a thing!!! (I prefer their Itlian songs to their recent English covers!)

Back in 1998, I did a haka to the heavy part in Metallica’s one… and my course tutor (Māori guy) told me to never disrespect Māori culture like that again. So cool that times have changed and Māori are embracing metal in the same way that New Zealand is embracing Te Reo

I never thought I'd see the day when I'd hear the Polynesian tongue used to sing a metal song. As someone with Polynesian descent (Tongan) and a fan of metal, I feel as if a piece of my life is complete
Just saw them live yesterday in the Netherlands as the support act of Gojira and man they blew me away. They came on stage performing a haka to channel their fucking mana on stage and it sure as hell worked. This goes so fucking hard live and they know how to hype the crowd, constant circle/moshpit for the whole set, almost as wild as the main act.

Bulging eyes and stuck out tongues may seem goofy but it was one of the earliest intimidation tactics used against their opponents. Cool they included it in this video.
I never saw this goofy but diabolical. Even if you look at some deities in certain cultures, creeds and religions, you'll see those deities stick out their tongue and sometimes with their bulging eyes. All you got to do is learn more about these spiritual paths, the occult and paganism. Blessings
It's effective because of when they do it. You're about to fight to the death and you're not really feeling it, but the other guy looks like he's living for it, it does a number. The vikings had the same advantage when they invaded the anglos.
I heard it's because when one is beheaded, their tongues and eyes often look like that. It's pure intimidation and a warning. Note: not Maori, this is thirdhand info
As a Hawaiian metalhead I approve. For real this is some awesome stuff. And you can tell they know what they're talking about to with the lyrics. 20/10 would recommend to everyone

Hawaiian is an almost dead language for modern culture, it doesn't exist...

Thanks for the translation. I understood it was hardcore and emotional, plus the intro titles gave it a bit of context. . . but damn. . . this seems like something that would have been written by a survivor of that war, and not some kids putting together a metal song about historical events. As a Kiwi, mad respect. The history, the message, the culture. And amazing musicians, the band is by far in the elite level in the genre worldwide. Super proud.
Pakeha Maori are very common especially in Northland, but that doesn't make them any less Maori. I am from the same town these boys are from and I can happily say they have done their Whakapapa proud! And is it just me, or does the Maori dialect suit Metal music like a glove? Its a very aggressive sounding language, it's beautiful. Kia Kaha!
Aye, the Maori language has the right stuff for metal. Great song, impressive video too - and perhaps even more important the band isn't sporting tattoos they haven't earned. So obvious respect for the culture they sing about. /salute
I've been waiting a while to hear Te Reo in metal music; it's officially the most poetic language in the world, because it's the only language where every syllable ends in a vowel.
Just found these guys after listing to Hu-Wolf Totem! Love this kind of cultural music. We need this now more than ever. Have great respect for the Maori. When my sons were about 13 or 14 they went on exchange program from the States to live in a Maori village for 3 weeks. They learned so much. These great people fed and taught my sons about there way of life, kept them safe and cared for. I have nothing but respect and thankfulness to the Maori for this. My sons are grown now,but they still talk and remember what they were taught and told. In these times in the world it's great to know that my sons were given tools to use, compassion and understanding caring and love for peoples around the world but the Maori will always hold a special place in there hearts and mine. Thank you💯❤️

In an award acceptance speech, drummer Henry De Jong said they wanted to keep Maori alive in New Zealand. These guys did way more than that. They are taking Maori global. To put it into perspective, I love this band, they're my new favorite. I'm in Texas in the U.S. playing their CD in my car, driving down the road singing along with the Maori lyrics... Whakarongo Mai Ra! Awesome stuff. They're fan base will increase exponentially after August when they appear in Germany at the Wacken Music Festival. \m/
I'm in Texas as well and they're my favorite band for 2018 because they sing in their native tongue which definitely caught my attention when I first heard them on liquid metal.
@@maxotto9877 it depends where you live. As a rule countryside Maori speak much better Maori. The de Jong boys went to a Maori immersion school as young boys and Louis actually spoke nothing but Maori until he went to primary school. Hard rock, metal, heavy metal is the only music that plays on actual instruments not computer generated. I know alot of others do to but not like this.
I look white to an extent...South Georgian.. my family history isn't though! The box society tries to put you in means absolutely nothing. As an Australian, I hear a lot of interesting things from sister countries and the unique kiwi’s but I’ve never seen it transformed into heavy metal before. Works well, the Māori always came off as super metal
They sang agressive chants before battle, they used to eat the hearts, and eyes of fallen foes, to devour their strenghts, they used to tatoo their bodies and faces when earning sucess in battle, (and so did their women) Maori IS metal culture before metal ever existed

Naturally, we have really good vocal control and power from growing up with many adults who have honed their voices. By the time we are teenages our skills have already matured without intention through waiata and song. Singing is infectious, if you sing, we sing. It can be alarming when you're learning how to do the "dad voice" without terrifying the living shit out of the neighborhood and the kids because it resonates too much. Sorry kids, hope you still have ears.
I simply cannot stop watching this video. I love the song on its own, but paired with the video takes it to another level. Extremely moving & emotional & powerful. Thanks be to those who created this & for opening up my understanding of other cultures & their histories.
This showed up unexpectedly in my playlist as I was working out this morning. If a song about a Maori chieftain on a warpath can't motivate you for a workout, I can't help you dude.
Gotta say guys well done..you have a great future..stay on the metal path,it's great to see the younger men keeping the faith of metal alive.. from a 57year old Aussie headbanger
I went to what I can only assume was one of their first live gigs... They started in Whangarei, NZ. I saw them for the first time at Rockquest 2011 because some of my mates had entered the contest (Its like a music talent show for kids between the ages of 11 and 18, and i think it was that year). They were so baby back then, maybe 13 years old? We started a big ol' mosh pit and all of the parents who were there to watch their kids do some generic Ed Sheerany bs were horrified by the overly enthused teenage metal heads going hard out for this band, Security eventually had to break up all of our ruckus causing behaviour :) They came back and played the year after in the same contest and we were all there especially to see them. I can honestly say it's been an honour seeing these lads grow up, Meeting them, going to some of their earliest gigs at The Butter Factory, just yeah... It's just so so rad that they have such a big following now and we all called it from the beginning
After seeing the shaman reciting incantations, I wondered how much of a magickal undertow there was to this song. After reading the lyrics, it became clear there's no undertow, as this ENTIRE song is an incantation. My hats off to you guys, you all are far more adept than your age would suggest. This one song puts you far past most metal bands I once thought were good.
That is possibly the most epic video I have ever seen. It is awesome seeing Metal done so well and in such great reverence to history and in particular to Māori history, language and culture. You guys knocked it out of the park.
This is good music! And the fact that they sing in this language, it makes the metal more raw and brutal. It's like I see a Haka dance with metal on it, or the other way around! Cheers from Romania!
I don't want to be rude but the haka isn't a dance. Its a sign of a challenge. I learned that from my grandmother b4 she passed. Idk much about my Māori heritage but I do know we originated in mosburn or orapuki and in my family name (Kelland) I have rights to go to the mutton bird islands. That's all I know sadly.
Why does a dislike of a band with success always boil down to bitterness or jealousy for some? I dislike that there are people going around calling themselves metalheads when they only listen to a select 10 bands and ignore anything less known than that. Fame is a joke and only leads to eventual irrelevancy. People who innovate are actually remembered.
@@zets8238 I hear what you are saying and you don't have to like it but that is textbook bitterness: "anger and disappointment at being treated unfairly; resentment".
For those asking .....they are singing in Māori also known as Te Reo ("the language"), is an Eastern Polynesian language spoken by the Māori people , the indigenous population of New Zealand. Since 1987, it has been one of New Zealand's official languages .
lewis lewis omg why do we suck at our own history so much... Cook mapped NZ he didn't establish a colony, that was Hobson when they signed the treaty 70yrs later.. Which incidentally is the reason why we can listen to this kick ass song in this kick ass language together, unlike every other boring British colony because they dont bother to respect their indigenous culture.
I've been on a metal video binge lately, and this is for sure the best I've seen in a long time. The little girl with the Taiaha standing up to the War Chief was f&%king metal. Made my day.
Me too...came here looking for more. Loving these guys sound and using Te Reo absolutely sets them apart! Don't speak fluent but its really working for the genre of music.
As Brazilian it blew my mind as soon as I saw it.. it is conspicuous that I can't understand a single word in the Maori language, it sounds really beautiful to listening to... It's really amazing see that metal goes beyond the troubles times we've been facing. Thank you guys for this amazing song👏🏻
I would listen to Sepultura until my ears bled, man. Here I am again listening to ancient strength from indigenous people from "forgotten" corners of the map bringing the noise! \m/
Holy effing ... As a former (Belgian) rugby player I recognized the language and stopped whatever I was doing ... watched this clip several times ... this rocks ... from now on I m following these guys
I really appreciate this band and grow tired of others shitting on them for the colour of their skin. I have two cousins that are of the lighter complexion, but are still very First Nations ("American Indian" for our American friends) and they can track, trap, hunt and fight...they are of the Land, just like this band. Aho!! Stay Solid!
Is it just me, or is it the image these people possess simply beautiful? I think tattoos on any part of the body, especially the face, is a wonderful thing. These people are gorgeous to me.
These kids are the future, regardless of their skin color. They actually embrace the existence of their ancestors as well as their Heritage which I hope does not tarnish as time passes by, that is pretty Metal to me. Approved AVE MUS METALLUM.
@name surname ...just means he can read. Lots of uninformed people have looked at the band (and their blonde haired general white-ness) and hopped right on the cultural appropriation soapbox. Without even considering the Maori heritage the whole band shares. I believe it's these misinformed, self appointed saviours of racial identity his comment is directed at. And thank you for proving yourself one of them.
@@d112cons Everyone in NZ respects and takes part in Maori tradition. They don't fight over race politics bs like everyone else does in the west. They support, respect, and promote.
I get shivers all over my body, music video, music, history, a language that I don't know at all, but it sounds beautiful, it's all put together into something so awesome. I will come back here. Greetings from Poland! ❤
Why does the little girl with the taiaha bring tears to my eyes? To see a little kotiro with the courage to stand before a tapatoru toa e haka peruperu ana... beautiful.
Plus, it works. She stops them dead in their tracks. They don't go past her. They give her a war dance, leave what she is protecting alone and search for _other_ enemies (plenty of them all around).
@@notfeedynotlazy Haka, not war dance. It's *important*. Haka are not always war dance. They can be welcoming, threatening but not meant for fighting, loving, sad, happy, they are a show of emotion or celebration. The simplification of kapa haka as simply a war dance damages the ao haka of my culture.
@@bandanimals3710 Sure. A bunch of guys loaded for bear massacring a village start a haka, and _this_ particular haka is not necessarily a war one. Suuuuuuuuure.
@@bandanimals3710 Let me elaborate. In _my_ own culture, we _also_ have things (in my case, expresions and idioms) whose meaning can range all the way from a grave insult to a form of endearement betwen friends (you do NOT need to convince me of that about the haka, I already know): but if the one using them is charging at you with an open switchblade on his hand in a dark alley, you _know_ that the meaning it has in _that_ particular instance is not quite the conveying of friendship. And exactly the same happens with this video's haka. That particular one is TOTALLY the war dance kind of haka.
@@notfeedynotlazy Then use haka taua, haka peruperu. The word haka is not the end all be all, nor was I claiming this specific one wasn't a haka peruperu/taua.
Great kids - seen them in Toronto - met them - got Louis's pick - band signed my girls shirt - was bad ass - for 17yr olds - lol - jamming in a bar they can't drink at - lol
Saw them live in Cardiff, they were the opening act for Gojira... Thing is, I already knew about them before attending the concert... And as I predicted, they absolutely smashed it ! I wish they played a bit more, although Gojira was on another level, but I wouldn't compare the two !
I really love when people add their own cultural twist to metal or rock. I feel like I am going on a world tour from the comfort of my own home.
Check out Ningen Isu, they are awesome :)
Norse culture, Japanese Culture, Mongol Culture, now Maori Culture. Funny how all the warrior cultures translate most easily to metal.

It's effective because of when they do it. You're about to fight to the death and you're not really feeling it, but the other guy looks like he's living for it, it does a number. The vikings had the same advantage when they invaded the anglos.

Everyone in NZ respects and takes part in Maori tradition. They don't fight over race politics bs like everyone else does in the west. They support, respect, and promote.
What does Ave mus metallum mean?
Deetroiter Their father is part Maori
I need a 10 hour loop of that chorus. It's so perfect.
It really is. The chorus and breakdown are definitely my favorite parts.
It definitely is. I just found them and I love it way to much it's hype as Hell
Getting heavy sepultura vibes ... That is definetly a good thing.
