    It's on my top-ten list of family-friendly, fun wooden coasters. Great for first timers, not too rough (it's well maintained), not too fast and furious, just tall enough, good for a shriek or two. I took a 70-year-old on it as her first roller coaster (!) a few years back, and she still talks about how much fun and "thrilling" it was. As I noted 2 years ago, it's located in a parking lot and so it's not a scenic ride, but this means that its L-shaped out-and-back configuration has a clear "narrative": you can see exactly where you are going and know when you get there; along with its short train of 3 cars, it creates a sort of welcoming friendliness.

    Still a great ride after all these years. Not the biggest coaster around New England. But the back seat will give you some air time and a great kick. So happy that classics like this one are still around~

    The retracking/reprofiling work that was done several years ago has made this an amazingly smooth ride for a classic woodie. I rode it yesterday and I think it was the smoothest I've ever felt it run. It's a good ride.

    I lived 18yrs in the States, mostly Boston, and this was my most local coaster. It always had good airtime but depending on the day and conditions the range was everything from small pops to virtual stand-up stuff on the very same hill.
    My favourite within a reasonable drive, though, was the Riverside Cyclone, a brutal wonderful thing. A pity that Six Flags neutered it and then removed it.
    Also, I have wonderful memories of an Enthusiast's meet-up and takeover of Flyer Comet when Whalom Park was in it's dying days, and jovernight

    • @bodsnvimto
      @bodsnvimto Рік тому +2

      No idea what happened at the end of that last message but the bits I mentioned about how great Boulder Dash was in the pitch black were omitted and I certainly never typed in 'jovernight', but everything from the J (which was the first letter of just) to overnight has disappeared.

    • @davidjellis
      @davidjellis  Рік тому

      I only rode the Cyclone after it had been neutered...still a great ride but clearly not a patch on the original build. Never visited Whalom park.

      @@bodsnvimto Boulder Dash remains one of my favourite woodies...such a unique design. I think it was the 2001 trip it tore up the track in the turnaround and was out of action for most of the day after the ERS. When maintained properly it's a top 10 woodie on anyone's list!

    I grew up going to cannobie lake. I moved out to ohio in my twenties and now live close to Cedar Point (the roller coaster capital of the world). Cedar Point is cool and all, but cannobie lake will always be my favorite park.

      I enjoyed my visit to this park - the Cannonball was a pretty good woodie.
      On another topic - not sure why Cedar Point say they are the roller coaster capital - they have fewer coasters than Six Flags Magic Mountain, Energylandia and Canada's Wonderland.

      @@davidjellis I think they're arguing on quality, at this point. Whether *that* is true is a matter of opinion.
      Canobie is my home park and it has a charm that big thrill parks usually can't match. Its two adult coasters (now that the janky Corkscrew is no more) aren't the most extreme ones out there, but they're both good rides and well worth trying. There are a lot of decent flat rides and kiddie rides too, and more game arcades than many huge parks have.
      (Lake Compounce in Connecticut has a similar vibe and bigger rides, but it's also further from me.)

      The Corkscrew's gone now, so I'm glad you got your chance to ride it!
      Often I don't ride the Cannonball because the line is so long (well, long for Canobie, not necessarily in absolute terms) and Untamed is RIGHT THERE next to it with a single-rider line that lets me basically walk straight on. So I get tempted to ride that instead. But the Yankee Cannonball is such a nice experience that it's worth doing too.

      Before its most recent retracking, it had a shake and rattle to it that could be unnerving, compared to smoother coasters. But now it's very smooth for a classic woodie, rides almost like a new coaster. It's not the tallest ride but you get a little airtime on the drops and bunny hills.

      If this park ever got an RMC which is doubtful.. why would they close an old ride when they could just build a ground up one I'm pretty sure this ride doesnt have thr correct foundations for an RMC. So the whole ride would have to be demolished

    • @CoasterMan13Official

      It arguably had more air on the bunny hills back then but it also rattled your bones. I guess which matters more is a matter of taste.
      I rode it yesterday and thought it still had some force. It was a rain ride on what had been a warm day, and that probably helped.

    • @davidjellis
      @davidjellis  6 років тому +2

      Agreed, although usually there are offers that reduce the price a bit and often buying online in advance is cheaper - but I have been to far more expensive parks, I recall it was cheaper here after 5pm and they don't charge for parking...I have paid $20 for parking at a theme park before!

    • @Jaydoggy531
      @Jaydoggy531 5 років тому +4

      Yes it is steep - but I'm happy to support one of the few great completely independent parks still out there. Plus $40 you're in all day and there aren't any ride tickets. There's an outdoor stage and you can get a free show - local bands, comedians, and other performers etc. All in all it's just a great day if you're there with your pals. You can also just hang out by the nice lake.
