      There's a short article about Southampton's lost cinemas on the Daily Echo website; it mentions that Jurassic Park was the last film to be shown at the Odeon, and of course the old ABC is now The Square Balloon. I thought there were two small Odeon Cinemas in Above Bar St, but they didn't mention the other one so I must be thinking of the ABC too... www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/18734688.pictures-lost-cinemas-southampton-local-area/

      Its was PLan B, always in the pipeline. Eventhough they may have achieved building on Stoneham, which may have bought home their training facility from out in Marchwood along with a entire Sports and Music Arena. Abit like WembLey Stadium and Music and Entertainment venues. Its usually is strategic thinking like that, which encourages up and coming youngsters to believe, they could one day be playing in the main venue.
      It was the initial plan but I assume EastLeigh Borough thought we may need that Land if our EFC takes off...ie in a 100 Years..LoL

    I remember the local bigwigs in the 1980's talking about promoting trade, and getting more cash rolling into the City. They discussed building a super city between Portsmouth and Southampton. They invited more shop building. Well now their greedy ambition has permanently marked the city. Ironic then, that with the dominance of online shopping the city shown in this lovely video would be perfectly suitable for present needs.

      I know the city is pretty recognisable in most areas, but a lot of buildings have been demolished, and replaced (mostly), and road systems have changed. Here's a "small" list of what I've noticed has changed in Southampton since the 90s:
      - Buildings demolished in the city centre to make way for the WestQuay Shopping Centre and Watermark WestQuay
      -The Bargate Shopping Centre and surrounding shops and buildings demolished
      -Tyrell and Green demolished, and new Guildhall Square built, with alterations to Above Bar St
      - new road system between Ocean Village and Town Quay
      - Oceana Boulevard built on the site of Customs House, opposite Queens Park
      - Ocean Village marina area complete transformation
      - road pedestrianised at the top of High St
      - East St Shopping Centre demolished
      - Ikea built on the former Pirelli Cable Works
      - Different bus companies operating and (obviously) new car makes and models
      - Southampton FC, which was planned to have a new stadium in Stoneham, relocated from the Dell to St. Mary's
      - New university buildings in Bassett
      - St Andrews Presbyterian Church (at 03:03) on Charlotte Place Roundabout was demolished in 1998, and is now an office Building called Brunswick Gate.
      - The Jury's Inn built in the middle of the Charlotte Place roundabout
      - The Polygon Hotel demolished
      - Sea City Museum now at Civic Centre
      - Police station moved from Civic Centre to a new building near the Central Train Station
      - The Southern Daily Echo moved to Redbridge, and the building it used to occupy is part of The West Quay Shopping Centre
      - George Arthur Dunn has gone, and is today Starbucks
      - KFC has moved from the corner Civic Centre Road and Wesr Marlands Road, to the opposite corner (Civic Centre Road and Above Bar St
      - C&A has gone

    • @seandavies467
      @seandavies467 3 роки тому

      @@Quagmi Good observations. St Andrews church is a significant change but things like the Police station move is hardly noticeable, as I remember it was just a sign above a door - blink and you'd miss it. Obviously the new Police building is a dramatic change to the skyline. KFC moving - meh. Ocean Village yes that's changed a good deal (for the worse imo) in the past 5 years with the building on the Quay but I was only commenting on this area shown. If you made the same journey today in an old Ford Escort on a Sunday morning you would hardly see anything much different really.

    Everything has now changed.... They got rid of the bargate shopping centre in town.... and in 2016 they got rid of the buyology shop and made flats. Whenever they build new things they always build flats. Soon Southampton will be full of flats!

      No one's comparing Southampton to London. Most of the main indoor shopping centres of the time have been demolished, and WestQuay was built. New road systems, and shops changed hands. Ocean Village has also been mostly demolished and re-modelled. Leisure World and Ikea weren't around then (and Leisure World looks set to be demolished soon). Of course it's still mostly recognisable, as (just under) 30 years is not that long to transform a city, but a lot has also changed in my mind...

You should make another video once they've finished developing. This is the uni...and down here is the uni. Along here is the uni and this is where the uni is building another halls of residence. Getting sick of the place.

    • @Quagmi
      @Quagmi  5 років тому

      That's a shame - my Mum grew up in Bassett, and I believe my Grandad used to go to the Stile (although probably called something different back in the 80's and before?) I haven't been through that part of Southampton for a few years, but it changes every time I see it (as well as the city centre). The University must be doing well for itself... I'm now in Oxford, and the University here owns a big percentage of the city centre, but leases some of it's buildings to retail and other businesses. It's an easy way for them to make money I guess...

      This video was filmed way before UA-cam was invented, and was never made to be shared with the world. My grandparents filmed their tour of Southampton to show my Grandad's brother how much the city had changed since he left many years before.
