A great film, featuring some of my favorite Southern region locomotives, the USA tanks, E2 0-6-0s, the Bulleid West Country class, and even some of Maunsell's 4-6-0s! I particularly liked seeing the American side tanks roaming the docksides, as they had quite the distinction between other locos at the docks, like the LBSC engines, inside cylinders and British as can be.
@YOrbiTer 12 Actually, that would be nearly impossible. Thomas was built and sold in 1915 to Sodor, Rosie and her siblings were went to Southampton during the 1940's, to help with the war effort, so here's my theory. Thomas would probably know Rosie during the Second World War, where she was sent to Sodor. She proved far greater then the E2, which made Thomas jealous and worried for his siblings. But during the 60's, when Diesels started to replace Steam, he had sympathy for Rosie, and then the two would be made friends. So there.

It's a real shame that the E2 Class is gone. Although it had it's flaws, it was a beauty of a locomotive and was able to put our childhood into action!

It looked good, but that's all that was good about it irl. Otherwise, it was just okay at best and that's only the 2nd batch because the iconic due to Thomas 2nd batch was an attempt to correct the issues the first batch had, like the extended tanks.

There isn't much info on the audio production for the original series, but I do know that some of the sounds used were recorded at the Talyllyn Railway. Apart from that, I suppose old railway footage like this could have also been used for audio samples or simply as a reference.

It's nice to see an E2 in action. And one of the second batch with the extended tanks too! Also, do you think it's weird that the last two E2s were the last engines in their batches? 32104 and 32109?
Thomas, is a tank engine, who lives at the docks, on the LB&SCR Railway(I think?). He loves shunting trucks around the dock yard, he thinks no one works has hard had he does.
Most of the comments are about how this is the only footage of the E2 tank engines at work or about Thomas. *I’m only here for the footage of the special express trains that made a connection with the ocean liners*
I love how the E2 is technically the most recognized steam locomotive in the world, yet when these things were in service barely anyone paid attention to them.
Unlike Thomas, LB&SCR E2 class locomotives weren’t useful. The E2s were limited to only some parts of the docks because they were too long for some of the tight corners and were prone to derailing. They were originally built for light passenger trains but were unreliable for long distance.

@@bennickss i was saying i wish they still existed back then. currently, i can see why they are scrapped as they had bad brakes. this was 4 years ago, but ok.
+Colin Langford. You were right about it being Millbrook. Millbrook is the site of the container terminal now and they're talking about expanding it westwards. There's a lot of local opposition to this. All the railway infrastructure on the eastern side of the docks is now defunct save for one line that comes down from St. Denys past what was the old Southampton Terminus station. It crosses Canute Road as it winds down to the vehicle import/export facility.
If you wanna return steam to regular service then we'd have to find a way to "modernize" it. Steam locomotives still pull freight trains occasionally though.
4:48 What's quite sad is the Queen Elizabeth was sold to the Chinese in 1970 and the ship caught fire in Hong Kong harbor two years later. She was the largest passenger ship lost up to that point.
@Goldfish but it's true, and I like the E2. But the they were too big for the dockside bends, which is why the USA Class was used instead because they were much shorter than the E2
At 1:38 you can also see Thomas's friend Rosie in the video, she is based off the USA Dock Tank, which worked at Southampton alongside Thomas and later Salty, who is based off the BR Class 07.
It's been said before, but I do wish an E2 was preserved. The fact they're the basis for Thomas aside, they were elegantly designed locomotives, and had a surprisingly long and productive career. Whilst not the most amazing or well-performing locomotives ever made, the E2s found good use as shunters and were clearly quite helpful in some scenarios.
Me too, I’m sick of thomas fans gushing to and from railway videos to scream ‘ERMAHGERD IT TOMIZ’ at basis locos, I genuinely wish that thomas stuck to books and books only
I can understand that, in a way the television show messed up the reputation of the books and real life. While I was introduced to real trains by the show I can't say the show is a perfect representation of real life railways.
@@bennickss yea it is annoying most of the time, I'm a big Thomas fan as well but I also came to see the docks and the great ocean liners, as I'm a fan of them too. Yeah...It is annoying. Besides, in universe of the Railway Series, Thomas never worked at the docks in this video (he went almost immediately to Sodor). People forget that these engines existed irl too. Real life is disappointing sometimes. Looking into British rail history is quite fun. Besides, people don't seem to understand that the whole point of trains in the first place was so that humans wouldn't have to work as much by hand and haul heavy loads using machinery they built with time. And this video is an example of people moving goods around. Steam locomotives were literally the iron horses and could get any job done. Trains still help at harbors today but obviously not steam locomotives.

@@stationmasterkuma Someone said, given Thomas was built in 1915, he'd have to be 105 or 106, realistically. He's got 2nd batch traits, like extended tanks.
Fun fact, E2s No. 32105 and No. 32109 had been modified with bigger ladders for harbour work, weirdly they didn't add bigger buffers, which most harbour shunters had.
It’s so good to see the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway E2 Tank Engines in Action back in these days. It’s so sad that they’re all gone for scrap. I really wish at least one real life E2 is saved from scrap. How wonderful would that be.
(•_• ) Unfortunately the E2 class models were one of the most underwhelming steam locomotives in the industry becuz of its many errors. It runs kinda slow, has faulty brakes, small coal bunker making insufficient fuel issues even with the extended side tanks, and its HUGE wheel base making it difficult for working through tight rail bends. (•_• ) I'm sorry buddy, but atleast we have the memorable E2 Tank engine from an old TV series.
I’m honestly glad they were all scrapped, I couldn’t handle the number of thomas fans crowding heritage lines to see a completely terrible embarrassment to both railway enthusiasm and railways in general
If there was an E2 preserved and on display, everyone, almost, would be calling it Thomas. Speaking of Thomas, his original TV self's based on illustrations of him shorter length, I was told. In some illustrations, he IS E2 length and in others, he's shorter.

I miss the real life e2s
@Ethan Schmid Me!
@Man With 9000 IQ yeah the E2s brakes where rubbish and the locomotive couldnt balance well and Also it was hard af to make the locomotive move and it functioned like rubbish so scrapping then made sense
You weren’t alive when any of them were in service, why would you miss them?
@@bennickss i was saying i wish they still existed back then. currently, i can see why they are scrapped as they had bad brakes. this was 4 years ago, but ok.
Great footage. My father was on the QE at this time.
Can we all please stop arguing? The E2s weren't great but if someone likes something, you don't need to force them to think it's garbage
Let the Thomas fans like E2s because of him. I mean DeLoreans weren't that great, but people like them because of movies, so same idea.
Nice to see Thomas' basis working, and that is an E2 whistle we hear with the footage of one, right?
There's a whistle at 3:09 - not sure if it's the E2 or another engine running nearby. What a neat video this is!

Hmm.. Yes.. The floor here is made out of floor...
If you wanna return steam to regular service then we'd have to find a way to "modernize" it. Steam locomotives still pull freight trains occasionally though.

Those radios are cool and all but makes me wonder how hard it'd be to say/hear anything on the footplate
With the Thin Clergyman writing the Railway Series, you'd think some of these locomotives would be preserved.
ZZASCHA well pretty much every class of locomotive you see in this video is preserved the only loco not preserved in this video is the E2
And there's a good reason why no E2s were preserved. They were very inefficient and were weak locos.
Yar
But beaching
@Goldfish but it's true, and I like the E2. But the they were too big for the dockside bends, which is why the USA Class was used instead because they were much shorter than the E2
I feel really sad for these magnificent machines.
Also if you don't know yet. The ttte series added a new engine called Rebecca and at 4:03 you can see the real Rebecca

This is amazing 🤩

Me too, I’m sick of thomas fans gushing to and from railway videos to scream ‘ERMAHGERD IT TOMIZ’ at basis locos, I genuinely wish that thomas stuck to books and books only
I can understand that, in a way the television show messed up the reputation of the books and real life. While I was introduced to real trains by the show I can't say the show is a perfect representation of real life railways.
@@bennickss yea it is annoying most of the time, I'm a big Thomas fan as well but I also came to see the docks and the great ocean liners, as I'm a fan of them too. Usually you will see those annoying comments from younger Thomas fans, which they don't really care to know about the history of the real locos, which is sad but it's whateves...
Totally sick to death of Thomas fans, worst event on any heritage railway.

The E2's were actually garbage (100-104). 105-109 were pretty decent. Unless you wanna build another shunter, I won't do anything about it.
