2014 Worlds was hilarious. Mega Kangaskhan was so good that everyone brought counters instead of bringing it itself so you never saw it. It was just too good to do well at Worlds.

I love mega evolution so much. As someone who doesn't play competitively, I'm all about aesthetics and using my favourite Pokemon. And mega's gave me so much to look forward to.

I completely agree. I love that they buffed decent Mons that usually got ignored, even in non-competitive. Kangaskhan has been my favourite since gen 1 and to see it become broken was honestly awesome.

I'd like to see you make a tier list of different VGC years sometimes and talk about what made some metagames interesting or not!
I think it's interesting that you criticize megas for being the center of any VGC game (if you play your mega best you win) but you really like the dynamax meta where it seems even more centralizing. I'm more of a singles player, where megas feel more healthy and dynamax is way less balanced, whereas it seems like the opposite in doubles.
Yeah. Im a singles player myself. Megas weren't that broken. Though Dynamax in singles is just terrifying. Unlike how it seems in VGC in which it's the other way around for them. It really makes you think. Now imagine a format with Megas\Primals, Z-Moves, and Dynamax all in one. (Megas\Primals can't Dynamax, and you can't use your Z-Move while Dynamaxed), but imagine some disgusting sets like Z Splash Dynamax Gyarados or something. Oh goodness
I think it is in part because Megas are more one-dimensional. Since every Mega conflicts with every other Mega only a few Megas will actually see common usage, dual Mega teams were not that common. This is less of an issue in singles, Smogon singles to be exact as the tiers split up the Megas so that not every Mega has to compete with every Mega.
On the other hand you could have as many pokemon that are good at using Dynamax on your team as you want since there is no comitment of an item slot.
Dynamaxing also simplifies the pokemons options, whats left are strong options but predictable none the less. In singles these options are far harder to check as setup is a lot better there.
More Pokemon profit from Dynamax as any Pokemon can do it, sure some do it better but they CAN do it with little commitment and that allows for a bit more freedom in teambuilding.
Dynamaxing is also less lopsided, certain Megas take offense to a whole nother level but die to a highroll while others are too passive. With Dynamaxing you know what you'll get: double bulk and attacks in the 130 range with a bonus for 3 turns.
Lastly, probably the biggest point, is that very rarely is there value in holding a Mega Evolution, at best Rayquaza and Salamence want to keep their ability depending on the format, but most of the time you can just click it.
If you Dynamax in a bad spot that can be a huge swing for your opponent, since you often commit to staying in and losing a Maxed mon can be devastating. In singles this isn't as much of a concern as you can't pressure your opponent as well with 1 pokemon instead of 2 and on top of THAT moves that are really good against Dynamax like Protect and Yawn are really bad in singles too.
Tl;dr Dynamaxing > Mega Evolution in Doubles but Mega Evolution > Dynamaxing in singles.

@@davidschmied667 you explained it really well why Megas in Singles are healthy and why Dynamax in doubles is healthy. Megas aren't as disgusting in Singles cuz Singles is about 50% switching. Unlike how in doubles, switching doesn't happen nearly as often and your opening play being very important. Unlike how in singles, you can choose the same lead without even caring and it's more about setting up or laying traps and disgusting things like that that aren't as prevalent in doubles because of the constant pressure

Crazy how different singles and doubles meta games are. Charizard x, Lucario, Blaziken were dominating forces in singles
A super hard hitting mon is inherently so much better in singles. If you outspeed/tank a hit and one-shot something, you took their entire turn output then and there. In doubles you only take half their turn output because killing 1 mon leaves other one to do what it wants

@@MrEntinen that's why Blastoise is my favorite in the series. It surprises a lot of people when it tanks a STAB Super Effective hit with like 5.hp and than just delete them right back😄
Mega lucario was actually pretty good in vgc for one of the years (but then chalk came and mega lucario dropped off a cliff)
And Mega Rayquaza quickly got banned

I feel like Mega Swampert was a bit underrated. With Tailwind support from Pelipper this thing was firing off STAB Waterfall in the rain or earthquakes, and had ice punch to deal with Lando/Dragons/Grass types. You could also pair it with Fini to protect it from burns/sleep for more water synergy, or Koko who had perfect thunders in the rain.
But Wolfe hates Pelipper, it is known!

Really should change this from “competitively” to “vgc viability”. A lot of the mega’s you trashed were OP as hell in singles.

Singles is the best and the way it should be imo. Double battles didn't even exist until gen 3 and there was barely any in the game anyways
@@wesleyowens4089 double battles are way more strategic and have way more room for interesting and cool combos and strategies, which makes sense for a competitive format. I agree it does feel a little jarring coming from the main game which is all singles but honestly in my opinion pokemon would be way more interesting if doubles were the default.

Megas were much more balanced in singles. I've gotten into VGC very recently and "the khangaskan years" seem very un-pleasant from old matches
EDIT: After reading all of these comments I have decided megas were un-balanced, despite what a boon it was to some pokemon who could really use a buff and what a cool opportunity we lost buffing pokemon who were already well off

Dynamax seems to be the inverse of that. Though it seems like with Megas, you just had a few incredibly unbalanced Megas, and the rest were unable to keep up

Megas werent balanced at all in singles. Salamence, Gengar and in a minor extent Kangaskan were pretty broken; and you still have many other banned megas as well.
Maybe in doubles if you were to ban megas from tier S and A, then you would see a wide variety of megas viable, including those in tier C

I would love them to bring back megas because they're personally my favourite mechanic but I really hope they do something like not letting them be capable of dynamaxing. Or maybe something like you can dynamax your charizard but then it can no longer mega evolve and vice versa
They could totally do that, Rayquaza wasn't capable of mega evolving when it carried a Z-crystal.
Dynamax is better than mega evolve if your atk/sp.atk isn't bad, and maybe z move could be a counter to dynamax because it's high base power combined with high atk/sp.atk stat
It should be on mons like Mawile that need buffs, not like garchomp and salamence
Just get rid of dynamax and zmoves entirely tbh, would be too bloated with anything but pure Mega Evo

Camerupt has literally 10 times the results of Banette
I ran mega aggron in doubles in gen 7 when it was legal and got too 100. It’s great because once special sweepers were off the field, you could toxic and protect repeatedly. Aggron was and still is one of the best walls of all time in my opinion.
Toxic protect was more common and prolly better with Venosaur and thick fat + leechseed.
Im also one of these types of players.
I played alot of perish trap, toxic-seed, prankster, intimidate taunt type of style.
I dont like that linear speed/trickroom huge power things.

Yeah megas are waaaaay healthier when separated by usage stats in singles. Im not a doubles player, i just watch you for the quality content (and the competitive analysis too i can not play and still be interested). I cant imagine having a middle of the pack pokemon like lapras in a metagame ran by uber-level power pokemon it must have polarized the game a lot and that must have sucked to play. I still love megas; they're my favorite 'gimmick' out of the 3 that we've gotten and i had lots of fun with them on smogon for the 2 generations that they were available for.

The best Mega mons to me were the ones that changed type. Gyaradose and mega Charizard X were the most fun to set up with because of it.

@@ddrarrow The reason for them choosing doubles is due to a couple of factors.
First, the games are much faster.
Second, the games are a lot more dynamic with more strategies involved. In singles, half of the battles are switching Pokemon and trying to get into a good position.

Yeah I liked the idea of Megas, but they should have really restrained themselves more, giving them only to Pokemon who truly needed the power boost. Zard and Garchomp and Gardevoir and Gengar and so many others were already good and already wildly popular. Quit the pandering and give some love to the forgotten, say Girafarig or Qwilfish or Tropius, etc.

I always liked Megas, but it was certainly telling when the best Megas in singles were overpowering for the same reason they were in doubles. Most Pokémon have a little nuance, I find, when team building for different styles, but Megas were kinda constant.
I love the Wolfey dramatic zoom in, similar to John Wick zoom ins when actions hits
I love the tier list videos, it would be cool to see a team tier list video, like what types of common meta teams (for example psy spam, trick room, hyper offense, sun) rank in your proffeshinal wideo maker opinion in the current vgc meta

Diancie is very bulky and an all around great choice, just so long as there were no steel type attackers on the field. It got magic bounce, which took care of the status problem, and got crazy attack and special Attack, as well as a decent speed. I reached top 175 when using this Pokemon. If it’s typing was a bit better, it could be used as a very great dual tank. If only.

megas were so great because most of them were popular and fan favorites so for the most part your favorite pokémon could really become your signature/ace with a extra push. at least my perspective as a swampert, scizor, salamence, sableye, aggron and blastoise fan as a kid

I feel like a majority of those 'borderline' Megas would all move up in this environment just because of the way speed changes are applied now.
Gen 7 applies speed changes in the same way as modern

One thing I liked about mega formats over dynamax formats is it was much easier to determine who the threat on the opposing team was. Now, any pokemon could be a game changing threat with a good dynamax.
The fact he put lopunny in b tier is amazing to me. Lopunny was my favorite mega, and now that scrappy is immune to intimidate I would say it would be better.

Salamance was one of the ones that I expected to be high up
Aerialate is good because it gives you access to moves you don’t have, for example with Aerialate you basically have Brave Bird on a Salamance which is amazing
