    I was just searching for a quick breakdown of a console I wasn’t familiar with, and I came across your video. As an engineer of 20 years who is familiar with most digital console platforms, I’m likely not your intended audience.
    I must say, however, that you are one of the best and most engaging teachers of digital audio that I’ve ever seen. I will absolutely use this video as a teaching tool when I help train young engineers.
    Many thanks, and please continue to teach the next generation!

      Many thanks Ryan, I love the cut and thrust of mixing a live show but nothing makes me feel as alive as teaching a group of young people 🥰

    This is possibly the BEST tutorial l have ever seen in 40 years of being in the audio industry. Precisely explained all important features so that you can understand. The Allen and Heath manual is confusing, this man should have written it for them!!
    I would be honoured for this man to tutor me.Well done, great English, great sense of humour and students felt relaxed. 10/10.

    I was not happy with the tutorials that A&H provided, but I must say that YOUR tutorial just made the whole thing (which I previously found confusing) rather simple and obvious. Just the right amount of detail, demonstrations are helpful, and you don't give your English enough credit. I had zero problem understanding it, but I would add that your command of the language was better than most native English speakers, and the explanations were VERY well articulate.
    THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

      100% agree with David. I'm doing my first sound-engineer gig this Saturday and will be meeting this desk for the first time at the gig so I'm learning as much as I can beforehand. I've never used a digital desk before, only analog. Excellent tutorial, extremely helpful! On to Part 2...

    One of the best training videos ever!
    If one person is brand new to a mixing system, this is just fantastic and a great way to get into it.
    I continue to watch it - since the explanation is just great on the QU series from Allan&Heath.
    Also I like the dry method of teaching, interrupted by some little - but excellent - spiking jokes.
    (Oh and never mind the english - that is really excellent to follow!) :-)
    I for sure will look into other tutorials from you!

    For the newbie/novice/padawan I am, it's the perfect start with the QU 24!
    Thanks!
    I've got it for 4 weeks (capture 5 bands in multitracks and of course balanced/mix them.)
    And you realy helped me to pass from my old Yamahaa 01V1(1st edition) to this beauty, but I have still have a lot to learn...
    Best Regards
    Pascal

    Your videos were recommended to me so I can learn to use this mixer at my church, and I wholeheartedly agree with the recommendation! I agree with others that you are very easy to understand, and you are an excellent teacher!
    I also wanted to thank you for the on-screen explanations of "Singlish" terms! I find languages and dialects fascinating, so even though I had no trouble understanding you it was neat to learn a few things about your dialect on the way. ^_^ As others have commented, there's no need to apologize for your accent. Thank you for this excellent training series!

    Excellent video series! Looking forward to watching more. I truly enjoy your sense of humor! Going out next week for my first theatrical gig with the QU-32. 24 Sennheiser wireless mic systems with a high school group. I spent many hours researching digital mixers before settling on the A&H QU-32. I've had an analogue A&H mixer for almost 15 years and love everything about it. Just decided it was time to get in the 21st century! lol Again, thank you for an informative and light hearted series of videos. - Joel, Studio 52

      @GLBProductions  8 років тому

      +Joel Glaser Glad the videos have been useful! Yes, the training has to be enjoyable, and it helps the students to retain the information better I find. 24 channels of wireless huh? Hope you have a good frequency scanner ;)

      @joelglaser5657 8 років тому

      +GLB Productions Well, it helps that I live in a fairly rural area, but yes, I've done my research. I've been using wireless systems for about 20 years. It also helps having new, up-to-date systems that can be finely adjusted. Helps them all work together without crosstalk and interference from digital TV and other outside frequency sources. Any idea when part 3 of your videos on the QU-32 will be available? Looking forward to viewing. And again, thank you for posting them on UA-cam.

    Your tutorials are amazing! I've seen the one with soundcraft si expression and loved its simplicity, very useful for my church. Then I found this video and I don't know what is my favorite. We have a Yamaha 01v96, still very famous here in Brazil, and we're looking for another. This integration with iPad in this new mixers are excellent for us, because the house is pretty far from the stage and we always need two people working. Anyways, your tutorials are really helpful to me to decide what mixer buy. God bless your work!

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  8 років тому +1

      Hello Matheus, very glad to hear the videos have been helpful! Both of these mixers are well-designed and easy to use once you learn how. I would say that which one you buy will depend on the after-sales support you receive - make sure that whoever you buy from includes training in the package, and also setting up your amps and system processor to work with the new mixer as necessary.

    It was interesting to see how impressed they were with various functions - ie the motorised faders. I don't ever remember being that captivated by the first digital board I saw and worked with. Although before I saw my first digital board I'd been working with sound for ~3 years (2 of those studding at National Tech Training - all analogue gear) so I guess I was desensitised at that point to expensive and interesting gear.

    hi! My question may seem a bit off-topic (I got here as I've been flirting with the idea to get a Qu-16 chrome), but as you are posting tutorials (and a good one at that) it seems like you like to share your knowledge! ;) So here goes:
    I don't know much about sound mixing - studio or live bands (next to nada actually), but we set up sound & lighting systems for medium and large private events. 99% of the time, they are set up for a DJ's performance, so there is no need to mix & filter signals from different sources (vocals, bass, guitars, synths etc). However in the odd occasion that a band or singer may perform (usually before the actual party), we either outsource the live support setup (mixers, mics etc), or the band brings their own equipment set and just gives us the "final", processed/mixed, sound signal via master line-out and they just plug into our DJ mixer which plays through our speakers. Pretty simple - and we just don't bother with all the live stuff ourselves.
    However, I think that it's time we got a sound mixer to be able to accommodate those bands (whenever the situation arises) instead of needing to outsource it.
    So my question is if you think that we should just get a basic analog mixer like the Soundcraft Signature 12, or the Yamaha MG12XU, as I suppose they'll be easier to use and get to learn the basics with; or do you think that getting a much more expensive & digital Qu-16 chrome instead is a good investment (for OUR level)? I mean, do you think that the Qu would be way too complicated to use for basic use (until such time I actually learn what to do with it - whenever that'll be lol), or will it be as straightforward as the analog ones (for simple use)? Also, do digital mixers change a lot (technologically), very fast - so if it takes me/us 2-3 years to actually "need" & use its functions/potential, by that time it'll be an "old" mixer (technologically), so it'll be better to first by a cheaper analog one until I know "what's what"? So is spending the extra money going to be wasted, or will it still be a good investment?
    Scenario A means buying a cheaper analog one first, and when/if I need more, buying a second, digital one later (potentially). Scenario B means directly buying a much more expensive digital one like the Qu, so I'll only need to buy one. But if in a couple of years this digital one will be considered an old-tech "has-been", maybe it's not worth investing in it now whereas the analog one will pretty much remain unchanged years from today..
    What do you think?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  6 років тому +1

      Hi there Nounix, nice to hear from you :) You know it's really interesting - there was a time in my career as a professional sound engineer that I did a lot of work with events companies. There was an unspoken agreement between the events company and the sound rental company: for the events company it was "We shall shall not buy sound equipment!" and for the sound rental company it was "We shall not steal customers!" So bear that in mind - buying your own sound equipment sends a definite signal to any sound rental company you work with, which may or may not be an important business consideration for you.
      Having said that, I think it is true to say that analog gear in general will last far longer than digital - it's got to the point that digital mixers like the one in the video are basically computers with faders, and as such have a lifespan similar to that of a computer, so maybe 3-4 years of professional use. Analog mixers will last 10 years easily, as can be witnessed by the amount of live sound gear from the late 20th century that is still in use today. I've even seen mixers from the 70s still going strong!
      For you I think the decision will come down to the features that you need - do you need the processing power that a digital console offers, as well as the remote control? Or can you get by with more basic features? All of this will depend on the type of bands that you work with, their requirements as well as the requirements of your customers.
      Hope that's helpful, feel free to carry on this conversation.

      Thanks for your detailed reply! :)
      Regarding the dilemma you supposed that I may have, it's actually not the case with me. In fact, our clientele come to us to provide the full service - meaning that we will cover the entire production for them (sound systems, moving lights, special effects, trussing constructions, venue decorative illumination, power supply etc etc) and we also provide the djing part for which we have a strong name in our market. We own all this equipment ourselves and so there's never an issue of coming in conflict with our rental company, as there isn't one. Besides, the clientele is ours to begin with, so anyone else that we bring in upon our client's request that we don't cover in-house (eg a live band or singer/s) wouldn't have a "problem" with us offering the sound mixing/mic equipment, as it is us that would be giving them the gig to begin with. And when we may need to outsource this equipment from another company that specializes in live support; same story - it's us giving them the gig - not the other way 'round.
      I, actually, prefer it when a live band (whether they were brought in/introduced by us, or "outsiders" that were brought in directly by our client) comes with their own sound engineer and their own mics, monitors, instruments, mixers etc - that way we don't have to deal with that too ;) They set their own gear up and just give us ready master-out pair of cables and that's that. Perfect! ;)
      But, if there's a situation in which there's a band without any mic or mixing equipment of their own, and the budget just doesn't permit us outsourcing another company for it, it would be great to be able to cover this with our in-house mixer & mics etc.
      Now, as to what features we would "need", that's hard to say. The more the merrier, I guess. But that's more in light of it being better to able to do more, rather than to not. But if a digital mixer like the Qu-16 will do a hell of a lot more, but I'll need a "Ph.D" (lol) in digital sound engineering to do basic things with it, then - no - ease and simplicity is more important. But if the Qu-16 is just as simple for simple things, and then offers a mountain of things on top of that, then that's a BIG brownie point for the Qu! ;)
      So I guess that if you (who apparently are knowledgable in this specific field) say that technology in the digital mixer industry changes so fast that it would render "today's" digital mixer obsolete in a couple of years, maybe it's not the best idea to buy an expensive one like the A&H Qu-16 Chrome (which was actually released in '13!) given our very limited and infrequent POTENTIAL need for it... My initial thought was to maybe buy something now that is very respectable today (GIVEN that it will STILL be considered as being so in 4-5 years from now!), and whenever (and IF) the need arises, we'll have something GREAT to provide to the would-be connoisseur of this hypothetical gig! And if it's a dead-easy side-gig like a 15-minute show by 2 vocalists and a guitar player, within an event we set up, let it be "over-kill" using this mixer (AS LONG AS IT'S ALSO DEAD-SIMPLE TO USE for that use, just like a small analog mixer would be); who cares? Better to show up in a "Bentley" to pick "anyone" up from the train station (if that's the only car you have), than to ONLY own a "Hyndai" and to be asked to pick the "president" up from the airport lol :P In the latter case, you'll end up having to rent a Bentley for it anyway, while you'll ALSO have spent the money to buy the Hyndai which you just won't be able to use, so you'll have "wasted" money on both fronts.. :P ;) [Did any of this make any sense? lol]
      So, if I have understood correctly, if I AM to buy a mixer that's "respectable" now, and one that will continue to be so in the next 4-5 years (approx.) - for MY type/frequency of use - my best investment "bet" would be good analog one. And in the case that the band, or client, is very needy (and they DON'T have their own gear), the budget in such a case would logically be higher, so I could simply outsource the digital mixer/sound engineer etc and not need to "throw money away" now, as the Qu-16 will have lost a great deal of value in the near future as it will be outdated. Right?
      If yes (to all the above), would you consider my other options to be what I should be looking at (Yamaha MG12 XU, or MG16 XU, or Soundcraft Signature 12, or Signature 16)? So that even if a very knowledgable sound engineer or musician were to be given one of the above would think "great mixer!" (in the analog world, of course)! Or another one?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  6 років тому +1

      Good thoughts! I'm glad to hear that there's no possibility of competition between you and your sound rental companies. In my situation the fear of the events company was always that the client would contract directly with the sound rental company for some of their gigs, hence losing the events company a customer.
      In terms of simplicity of use, the key to getting used to a digital mixer is to use it frequently - at least once a week if possible. You'll then develop the necessary muscle and mental memory for where everything is. With analog mixers everything is visible but with digitals there is an awful lot hidden behind menus and specific function buttons. You say that your use will be limited and infrequent, so you probably will not be able to develop this fluency.
      If you're not sure about digital or analog, just base your decision on budget - this is often what I advise my customers to do. This will often help to clarify and objectify the issue. Assume that the digital mixer will need to be replaced in 3-5 years, the analog in 7-10 years, and just do the numbers from there. This is especially important for you as you say you will not be using the mixer that often.
      If you're looking at 16-channel mixers, I would suggest the Allen & Heath ZED and Mix Wizard series and the Yamaha MGP (NOT the MGXU) series. Soundcraft is currently going through some issues with their parent company so I can't recommend them at this time.

    • @nounix
      @nounix 6 років тому

      ok - clearly understood! Thanks! :)
      I guess I'll be looking for an analog mixer between 12, 14 and 16 channels max. The more channels the better I guess but the price goes significantly up between the 12 and 16 range - and another "minus" is that so does their carrying size. But like I said, if it's an event with a full-blown band with so many inputs and outputs needed, the budget will be higher and I could simply just outsource the mixer/mics/monitors/sound engineer.
      As I really don't know how to compare between analog mixers (apart from their brand-name being "good"), can you explain what you consider are the pros of the A&H Zed-12FX, 14FX and 16FX models vs the corresponding-channel models in the Signature series and the MG XU series? How do I choose one model over the others? Can they all do the same things for me (same effects, inputs/outputs etc), and it's just matter of being advised on their sound quality; or does each offer an "extra something" that the others don't?
      (Notice that I'm always comparing versions that include effects like the Yamaha XU and the Zed FX variations. I suppose that effects' engines are a must to have, no?)

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  6 років тому +1

      Yes for a full band setup 16-channels is typically the minimum required.
      In terms of comparing the mixers, there are so many parameters that it really needs to be done in person - I strongly recommend that you look for somebody local to you who is knowledgeable in these areas (start with your local pro-sound rental company) and make an appointment to discuss this with them. The thing is I don't know mixer pricing, warranty coverage and availability in your country/state/area so I can only make general recommendations. Things like after-sales support are just as important as the mixer that you choose. Hope that helps!

    Could you plz explain Wht is the advantage n disadvantage of grouping channels

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  Рік тому +1

      The advantage is that it allows you to apply processing such as EQ and compression to the entire group as opposed to one channel at a time. It also allows you to control the volume of the entire group using a single fader - this is particular important for inputs where the relative levels need to be maintained such as backing vocals or a muti-keyboard setup. The disadvantage is that you add another layer of control and adjustment which can cause its own problems, especially if the fader and mute switch are on a different layer of the console.

      It depends on how much the venue has changed - some venues sound very different empty vs. when they are full of people. You should not need to change the monitor mixes though - they should remain fairly consistent from the soundcheck.

      That's exactly right - if you need to use the stereo outputs as mono outputs you need to use the pan controls to assign sources to either the odd or even side of the output. They are really intended for musicians using in-ear-monitors.

    Hello, great training. We own QU-16 and it's used in church where recitations or speech are common. When QU-16 is turned ON, it loads Mix LR PEQ screen, where on this screen we have PEQ, GEQ, and COMP.
    On this PEQ we are cutting LF (155Hz, -7.6db), LM (893HZ, -9.4db), HM (3.67Hz, -8.8db), and HF (10.2Khz,-9.0db) frequencies. If we don't set this PEQ or bypass it, we get a lot of feedback with the 4 Bose MA12 speakers, which are installed by audio professional service where we're using 3 AKG C7 mics. But if we set this PEQ, feedback is gone!
    Is it practical to set Mix LR PEQ this way? Are we effecting vocals at the end by doing this much frequency cut off?
    Then for each mic input channel, we setup PEQ and COMP, but we're not happy with sound, Is it possible that setting Mix LR PEQ frequencies effects overall vocals?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  Рік тому +1

      Hi there Medo. From the description above, you seem to be using your main LR PEQ as a system tuning tool to prevent feedback. It does seem like a lot of cut, especially since all four bands are being used. You also say that you are unhappy with the sound. In this case, I suggest getting your system installer to come back and re-tune the system in its current configuration using the EQ in the system processor as opposed to on the mixer - the MA12 speakers require an external signal processor running the Bose ControlSpace software, and your installer can use these tools to improve the sound of your system.

    Great training video. Your students reactions were hilarious. The video was both helpful and entertaining. Even though we did not end up with an A&H board. The info here is somewhat transferable. I wanted an Allen & Heath Qu-32 or SoundCraft equivalent but the budget didn't allow. I like the simple workflow of both of these boards. But a couple of things bug me. I think neither have a built in RTA. Why in the world would these companies do this? Also I'm suspicious of touchscreens and their accuracy and longevity. Though that is the future, unfortunately. Also the laft of Android support is annoying. Though there is SoundCraft 3rd party support, I believe. Thanks again for the video.
    Correction: A&H has 3rd party support for Android, not SoundCraft.

      Thanks for the comment Glynne! The Qu32 does have an RTA function, it's accessed through the Home screen.
      Touchscreens have got to the point where they are extremely robust and reliable - especially the pressure sensitive type used on these mixers. However if you are unlucky and drop something on them and they break the broken part of the screen becomes unusable - I have a video on this, search for 'The Achilles' Heel of Digital Mixers'. Otherwise they are as reliable as the rest of the console. What did you end up buying in the end?

    I encountered one of these at a venue....
    I gave a left/right from the stereo out puts on my desk in to channel 7/8 of their A&H Qu series mixer.
    When both 7/8 on their desk were panned center, both channels came through both sides, but when 7/8 were panned L/R, only one channel could be heard, and it came from the left only of there PA
    Can you think why that would be?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  3 роки тому

      It suggests that the routing is not conventional, so the send to the PA is not being derived from the main LR outputs. It could possibly be from the groups or matrix sends. You would need to trace the lines from the mixer to find out exactly what's going on.

      That's a good question. My first thought was - why not just get an analog mixer? Something that has direct outs on every channel and enough additional channels to handle any effects you might be using. Having said that, a digital mixer like this does have a LOT of outputs - 10 mix, 8 group and 4 matrix for a total of 22 plus the main mix outputs. So it's possible to hack something together if you really need to. However it doesn't really seem worth the trouble to me...
