Silent Hill is a LONGTIME favorite of mine. I still remember renting it from the video store with my brother in 1998, and guiding him with a walkthrough from GameFAQs. I was glad that we didn't finish the game until the sun came up, because by the end, I was too scared to walk up to my room in the dark. This tale of a father's love for his daughter, and the horrors he'll endure just to find her, stays with me to this day. I really hope you enjoy the series.

I play all kinds of stuff, not just older, but also newer games. My hand is impacted by an injury and as long as I am still recovering, I wanted to play games that are a bit slower, less button-mash-heavy. Luckily lot's of the older games fit that description! AND I love these type of games.
Ah yes.. I remember all the way back in 1999 and 10 year old me found this game while going through my older brother's games. The terror was unlike anything I experienced before in a game. Life long fan of the originals. These games are works of art.

This game haunted me in a way no other game did. I convinced my dad to buy it for me when I was 9 years old thinking it was going to be like resident evil. Let’s just say by the end of it I had to sleep in my parents room for 3 days or so, and I couldn’t sleep with lights off for 2 months.

Colored red and blue buildings on the map (like the convenience store on the top) can be entered or have something important. Some of the other buildings may have health or ammo outside, try to stay on the sidewalks to spot them.
I absolutely LOVE this game, I haven't gotten around to playing the other games but this game is amazing. Camera angels in these old games are the best and I'm honestly sad that we just keep getting over the shoulder cameras now.
So happy you decided to play this game. This game was ahead of it's time and it's a treat, the best SH besides SH 2 in my opinion. Really hope it gates a remake one day. Have fun :)
it's so much fun to see you play this, and that you also liked the camera angles in the alley (one of the best openings in a video game), now you have played my 3 absolute PS1 favorites (this, Resident Evil and Tomb Raider) they are all very special, if you get the chance I also recommend Ape Escape, Resident Evil 2 (which you probably will play soon), Soul Reaver, Metal Gear Solid, Tomba, Spyro the Dragon, and two other very special games (not PS1 games but they are available on PS4, Shenmue and Quake)

Great game! No spoilers, but there's multiple endings, so don't be upset if you don't like what ending you get. It was made to be played multiple times. You also get new weapons each time you play.
I’m old enough to remember having to buy a strategy guide to get the best ending…well worth it though. My first play through, I got the worst ending and I thought “nah I gotta do better than this”
You're in for a wild ride with this game, Lizz! One day I really need to sit myself down and play these games in order. I started late in the series only completing Origins and Silent Hill 3. I own the first Silent Hill digitally on my PS3 and my copy of SH2 came bundled with 3. Good luck with this one, my dear… you’re gonna need it!
Man, my favorite horror game ever. They should have made a remake of this innstead of SH2… the graphics are what they are bit the story in this is golden. I remember when it came out, that camera angle in the alley was kinda famious. They dont make games like this anymore😔

I've been waiting for you to get to this Lizz, 10 year old me was terrified of certain moments in this game, ive played it since, it is a really good game, I'd recommend Silent Hill 2 as well, different story with different characters but still very good

And the music is the second protagonist. -It's not really ashes, in the game's lore. That was invented/reimagined in the film. -Apparently, Bachman Street is named that way based on Richard Bachman, which was a pseudonim Stephen King used to publish some of his books (i read The Long Walk and The Running man and i loved them). -About the monsters of the city/streets, since i think they are infinite, you're probably just better off dodging and running from them, so you don't waste ammo.

It's a bomb shelter alarm. very common in the 50"s and 60's when they tested bombs. They play it in the film The Time Machine (1960).

Silent Hill, especially this first game, is no joke. It is very unforgiving. You want to conserve ammo and health as much as you possibly can or you may end up crawling to the end with nothing to defeat the boss with. Resident Evil is a cake walk in comparison.
@@LIZZgame From my experience, try not to engage any enemies in the open world and you'll be ok. You can easily outrun them and they respawn. For the enemies inside the school, hospital, etc you should be finding enough ammo and you rarely waste it because auto-aim works much better than in Resident Evil

I think most people prefer the second Silent Hill game but this is my favourite survival horror of all. This game scared me 😱 Did you notice the reference on the keys? Scarecrow, lion, woodsman? Imagine the woodsman being made out of tin 😉 The street names are all writers of horror/sci-fi, except Midwich, which is referring to the Midwich Cuckoos, a sci-fi horror novel by John Windham. The game is full of references to other stuff. I used to love trying to catch them.
3:50 the movie is not accurate with the real lore of Silent Hill intended by the original creators in the first 4 games, in the first game it's actually snow, and not ashes. The only source of correct information about Silent Hill are the first 4 games and the Book of Lost Memories. Anything other than that, including the other games, is usually not correct information.
This game gave me legit nightmares as a kid and I fell in love with it! Btw you should play SH: Origins then SH3 for the canon storyline stemming from this title. The other titles SH2, 4, Homecoming and Downpour have nothing to do with the original timeline. That being said, given the SH2 remake is days away, please consider playing the original SH2 too?
I remember my friend turning this game off after the school locker cat episode. Sadly it didn't run on my TV cause it was NTSC. But I did play it later and I loved it.

Und mit dem, was in naher Zukunft so kommen soll, ein gut gewählter Zeitpunkt. :-) Das erste Silent Hill Spiel hat mehr noch ein Remake verdient als Teil 2. Die Story mag etwas konfus und abgedreht sein, aber die Stimmung, die das originale Spiel aufbaut ist der Wahnsinn, selbst innerhalb der eigenen Reihe kommen die meisten Titel nicht an diese unheimliche Atmosphäre heran.

Damn, still sad they didn't choose to ever refurbish this gem. It definitely deserves a facelift as much as SH2, because in the end this is the first entry and it's initial success back in the day made it a whole franchise. Enjoy the playthrough!
Mentioning the movie brings up one... "frustrating" aspect of the production. The reason why the movie focused on Rose instead of Harry is because the director claimed he didn't believe it would make sense for a father to go through hell for his daughter, only a "feminine" person would. Same reason the movie changed Alessa's mother to be a victim, because "there are no bad mothers" lol.
To be honest: in this situation, I would most likely only stay in the apartment with the doghouse. And barricade the front door with everything that isn't nailed down. And i'd probably crawl under the kitchen table at the slightest noise. And then starve to death there (because apparently there's only healing potions and pistol ammunition in this town).
I remember playing this with the demo i got with my metal gear solid game back in the day, shit myself going down that alley when the sirens kicked in. I have the original boxed disc on platinum, worth a bit of money now as all the CD versions of the silent hill franchise are.
If you're into gaming, Silent Hill 1-4 are an experience you have to have at least once in your life, I wish I could play them all for the first time again. They are all so creative and interesting + weirdly such a vibe. 😂😂

I had to start this playthrough video set after watching your SH2 series. I hope you play 3 and can find a way to play SH The Room. I'm not sure if Shattered Memories is something you would like but I suggest to give it a try after SH3.

I've played this game so many times in my youth. Including in order to see this 02:03 cutscene. I thought that somehow i could break into the door that Dahlia had gone through. But as turned out later this cutscene is not in the game. Perhaps the developers wanted to add it to the game but it remained only in the intro. (Automatic translation)
If you enjoy games like this one you should look into the game FEAR - FIRST ENCOUNTER ASSAULT RECON - First-person shooter, psychological horror. The game is from 2005 it had two more releases FEAR 2: Project Origin and FEAR 3. Highly recommended it but keep in mind is definitely more of a psychological horror.
Yeah, Dino Crisis is made by the same guy who made Resident Evil. It plays very similarly. You will be quite good at it after RE1, Code Veronica X, and this game.
A word of advice to anyone who wants to play the game multiple times to get all endings and who are playing for the first time: every time you finish the game,you can start a new game cycle, with each subsequent playthroughs increasing in difficulty. Hence,starting on 'easy' for the 1st gameplay is recommended, as the next will be on 'normal' and the 3rd on 'hard'. Now,herein the logic for this (slight spoiler here): there is a "special" ending on the 2nd playthrough that will grant you a certain weapon that will imensely help you on your 3rd game. This requires you,again on play 2,to trigger a series of events with an item you must find early on. I suggest looking for information on all these steps on the interwebs or the youtubes. Finally, enjoy your romp in Silent Hill and frightful endeavors! Good luck.
Also, I don't think I've played Dino Crisis since I was a young teenager, lol. It was popular when it came out, but didn't last like the Resident Evil series did.

Great in a dark, emotional story sense. As loved as the series was is strange we didn't get anything new sooner, until now.

The movie was more about capturing the games' general atmosphere and aesthetics than its lore.
I remember the movie being my introduction to this franchise. The atmosphere blew me away - it is such a predecessor to modern lliminal spaces.

When you complete it once you get secret extra options by pressing both shoulder buttons where you get to choose 1st person mode called Self Mode

Next Silent Hill 3 it is the Sequel, the silent Hill Origins, which is a prequel to Silent Hill 1.
3:50 the movie is not accurate with the real lore of Silent Hill intended by the original creators in the first 4 games, in the first game it's actually snow, and not ashes.
The only source of correct information about Silent Hill are the first 4 games and the Book of Lost Memories. Anything other than that, including the other games, is usually not correct information.

This game gave me legit nightmares as a kid and I fell in love with it! Btw you should play SH: Origins then SH3 for the canon storyline stemming from this title. The other titles SH2, 4, Homecoming and Downpour have nothing to do with the original timeline. That being said, given the SH2 remake is days away, please consider playing the original SH2 too?
I do intend to play SH2 as well, ideally before SH2 Remake comes out, so I can compare them!
I remember my friend turning this game off after the school locker cat episode. Sadly it didn't run on my TV cause it was NTSC. But I did play it later and I loved it.

Das erste Silent Hill Spiel hat mehr noch ein Remake verdient als Teil 2.
Die Story mag etwas konfus und abgedreht sein, aber die Stimmung, die das originale Spiel aufbaut ist der Wahnsinn, selbst innerhalb der eigenen Reihe kommen die meisten Titel nicht an diese unheimliche Atmosphäre heran.

This is top 10 along with RE, Half-life, Zelda, DS, Max Payne and Metal Gear in franchises I wish I could experience again for the first time.

Mentioning the movie brings up one... "frustrating" aspect of the production.
The reason why the movie focused on Rose instead of Harry is because the director claimed he didn't believe it would make sense for a father to go through hell for his daughter, only a "feminine" person would.
Same reason the movie changed Alessa's mother to be a victim, because "there are no bad mothers" lol.

I remember playing this with the demo i got with my metal gear solid game back in the day, shit myself going down that alley when the sirens kicked in. I have the original boxed disc on platinum, worth a bit of money now as all the CD versions of the silent hill franchise are.
If you're into gaming, Silent Hill 1-4 are an experience you have to have at least once in your life, I wish I could play them all for the first time again. They are all so creative and interesting + weirdly such a vibe. 😂😂

I had to start this playthrough video set after watching your SH2 series. I hope you play 3 and can find a way to play SH The Room. I'm not sure if Shattered Memories is something you would like but I suggest to give it a try after SH3.
I plan on playing SH3 and 4 some time this month, if not maybe November.

I've played this game so many times in my youth. Including in order to see this 02:03 cutscene. I thought that somehow i could break into the door that Dahlia had gone through. But as turned out later this cutscene is not in the game. Perhaps the developers wanted to add it to the game but it remained only in the intro.

If you enjoy games like this one you should look into the game FEAR - FIRST ENCOUNTER ASSAULT RECON - First-person shooter, psychological horror. The game is from 2005 it had two more releases FEAR 2: Project Origin and FEAR 3. Highly recommended it but keep in mind is definitely more of a psychological horror.
Yeah, Dino Crisis is made by the same guy who made Resident Evil. It plays very similarly. You will be quite good at it after RE1, Code Veronica X, and this game.
You have a lot of guts to play Silent Hill, you really do.
A word of advice to anyone who wants to play the game multiple times to get all endings and who are playing for the first time: every time you finish the game,you can start a new game cycle, with each subsequent playthroughs increasing in difficulty. Hence,starting on 'easy' for the 1st gameplay is recommended, as the next will be on 'normal' and the 3rd on 'hard'. Now,herein the logic for this (slight spoiler here): there is a "special" ending on the 2nd playthrough that will grant you a certain weapon that will imensely help you on your 3rd game. This requires you,again on play 2,to trigger a series of events with an item you must find early on. I suggest looking for information on all these steps on the interwebs or the youtubes. Finally, enjoy your romp in Silent Hill and frightful endeavors! Good luck.
Also, I don't think I've played Dino Crisis since I was a young teenager, lol. It was popular when it came out, but didn't last like the Resident Evil series did.
