Gaming History: Might and Magic 4-5 World of Xeen "Silly, strange and utterly unique"

  • Might and Magic 4-5 World of Xeen is a combination of games that gives you more than the sum of its parts. It is also quite silly. Where else are you going to find gnome vampires, ninjas, mummy dragons, gods, devils, space ships and giant eyeballs with wings that shoot lasers? Nowhere else, that's where!

    Personally, I absolutely love the scifi elements in the old Might and Magic and Wizardry games, it's just so cheesy 80s/90s style, and gives the games a sense of wonder. It's such a cool concept to combine fantasy with scifi, nobody makes that kind of thing anymore.

    Exploration is indeed the thing I loved about this game most. There were certain restrictions that made it even more interesting. For example, there were terrain types that could be travelled through only if your characters had certain skill. One skill to swim, one skill to travel in woods, one skill to travel in mountains, one skill to travel in desert. If you did not have a skill for desert travel it took 8 hours to make a single step in there, and your party was tired all the time, making it really hard to fight enemies and get out alive.
    And to make it even tougher, the skills were taught by special NPCs located in different places, so you had to travel to far-away town to learn how to traverse mountains... It was like the world have several levels (or layers), every new travel skill unlocks places you can visit.
    I remember during my first playthrough I could not find a forest skill teacher for some reason, and I ended up travelling in woods using teleportation spell :). And that was terrific, you blindly jump onto some direction by X squares without even seeing where you will end up (because the trees). Sometimes you got into open area, sometimes there were monsters, sometimes you got into a trap, etc. Now that was an adventure :).

    I just bought the GOG collection of 1-6 this past weekend. I've played for about two hours on 6 so far and I'm really enjoying it (for being a 20 year old game). Back when M&M was popular I was more of a console gamer so it's fun to go back and try out these old classics. I don't know how deep I'll delve into them but they are a lot of fun. I agree with you that was something that was more acceptable in the 80s to the 90s was the melding of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Just look at games like Phantasy Star on the Sega Genesis for example.

    Wizardry VI and VII are two of my favorite games, so I love the melding of fantasy and sci-fi elements. The genres of fantasy and sci-fi actually weren't so rigidly separated until recently. A lot of classic sci-fi had fantasy elements (John Carter, Buck Rogers) and pulp fantasy was often inflected with sci-fi (Dying Earth, even some Conan stories). George Lucas drew directly from this synthesis when created a sci-fi adventure trilogy that included space wizards and an order of laser sword-wielding knights.

    @Cyberlisk 5 років тому +6

    When I played this as a child, I found the Dungeon of Death (which was only accessible after combining the games) most confusing. After 3 levels of tough enemies and puzzles, you entered some sci-fi room with multiple spawns of Lord Xeen (final boss of MM4). It was never really explained what was going on there, I first thought it was a bug or something. There even where cloud tiles and when you fall through them you land in the beginning city.

    I remember the unholy stench raised by people over the Forge faction back in HoMM 3. That shit made me shake my head and lambaste more than a few people as obviously knowing absolutely nothing about the world, or the friggin' factions or even the history/backstory/origins of the world they supposedly "love." I was actually looking forward to messing around with the Forge town. :|

    The game had an instory reason for the mixture of sci fi and medieval settings: All these "planets" of M&M 1-8 were all virtual worlds of an old big colony ship, that had gone rogue over millenia. The ancients had made this ship to bring their people to a new home after their old one was destroyed. And for the people inside the ship to stay alive they got attached to the ship Matrix-style and lived their lifes in the worlds they wanted to, some chosed more sci-fi worlds, some worlds of ancient times (MM3 was such a planet) some preferred mideval worlds etc.
    But then Sheltem, who is a crazy manifested AI in a robot, took over some of the worlds and started crashing them into each other, killing the people who lived on that worlds. So in MM1 a party on such a doomed planet got out to fight Sheltem. MM2 too. Sheltem always was able to flee to another world. And in MM4 he had crashed on Xeen and started his typical schenanigans there. Xeen was also already quite corrupted, as the AI of the ship had mixed up Sci-Fi and medieval theses into this world.
    That's by the way also the reason, why you are allowed to kill most of the inhabitants of the AI - they are not real people. Only the normal NPcs who give you quests are real - and you cannot kill them therefore - but all the monsters are just invented by the AI.

      Alex Oelkers Yes. And in Wizardry VIII once you start you get into a space ship and sail to another planet, and narrated from the perspective of characters from a medieval time that don't know what technology is but believe it is magic that allows it to travel, calling a great mage the owner of your transport.

    You didn't miss much in Might and Magic 3. It felt like a tech demo for Xeen. The gameplay was similar but the world was really underdeveloped. Just look at the map compared to other M&M maps and you'll see what I mean. It's just 5 islands that each represent an element. Even in previous games the maps are so much more lifelike and interesting to explore. Also there's three castles in the game occupied by King Righteous, King Neutral, and King Chaos. It's worldbuilding stripped down to the bare essentials. Xeen was an enormous improvement.

      They had a massive amount of HP, an AC you hardly ever could get through and that instakill special attack. At one point I figured out the easiest way to get rid of them is pulling them south, cross the river where there's no forest and then throw strong fire or lightning spells at them. When I first played it, I didn't have Clouds which I later realized would make that part a lot easier since you can get much stronger spells on the other side with just around level 20 chars, then have a beacon placed at some SP fountain and then it's just rinse and repeat where you'll just cut through them with Incinerate spells... Darkside only truly is the hard mode, not just at that point. That was just the one that you'll never forget :D

    If you guys like sci-fi and fantasy mix, try Thorgal comic series. One of the best-selling European comics, it's been running since the 1970s and has three spin-off series. Beautifully drawn, with epic adventures, totally likeable main protagonist and more fair maidens than you could ever ask for. Oh yeah and there's spaceships and blasters and ancient technology in it.

    I played this when it came out- I didn't realize that the games were actually combined worlds. I always just thought you would transfer your party to the 2nd game. Honestly though I couldn't get into it. The 80's fusion of fantasy and sci-fi were not for me, don't get me wrong, I absolutely love both genres. But not in the same game. I would play Star Trek 25th Anniversary and Kings Quest just the same. But like the out of world stuff like the early Ultima's was not for me.

    This game and rest of series is a imagination explosion. Totally unique and a testament to depth of the human mind unrestricted by capitalism. Its in a sense quite advanced in sense of freedom of creation. Years ahead of the current system of corporate blood money machine with cache grab at its core in every game now.

    • @Gilnar13
      @Gilnar13 5 років тому +3

      unrestricted by capitalism? How do you think they got the money to make those games? Ever heard of the great creative explosion in the non-capitalist bloc? Yeah, me neither, because there wasn't one.
      I mean, I get what you're getting at, business can very much kill bold imaginative ideas, but it's actually capitalism that enables at least some of them to flourish at all. Both feudalism and socialism/communism, only two other economic systems tried, stifled creativity terribly and with way more brutality, should I say, than capitalism.

      It did, actually. When I was a child my dad used to get a lot of awesome games at our local library. Most of them were part of a magazine series called "Bestseller Games" (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bestseller_Games). Sadly, they are defunct now, but they used to have the CD versions of some top notch games, complete with some of the supplementary fluff material - I remember the "Grail Diary" from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and the copy protection wheel from the first Monkey Isand very fondly :-). Anyway, the M&M CD version was completely localized, including German audio.
