- Heroes of Might and Magic 3 - Well, it’s that time of the year again, when I sink into a Heroes of Might and Magic game and come out only when I’ve had my fill. This time it’s Heroes of Might and Magic 3, the one that everyone loves, that one that is arguably the best in the series, and yet still manages to tick me off in a few ways.

Still get goosebumps from that intro, even if it's just corporate logos. I associate it with so much joy.
Yeah the first time i saw it i got them too and still remember it when i open the game...
fuck i remember it was 1999 and i got the game demo in a totally random way, it only had the "Dead and Buried" map and i felt so much in love with it, so rich in content .. the graphics and the music! such a vivid and fantastic world

One of THE best games, ever made.
For the absolutely most FRESH and BEST experience of Heroes 3 (at least that I have experienced so far) is if you download the fan made expansion Horn of the Abyss. Not only do we get a new castle, but it has a lot more great concent and also BALANCE which the game is in desperate need of. It also provice insane QoL UI and little nice additions everywhere.
Appreciate taking time to put up content. Constructive feedback would be this review is all over the place and is not a review most of the time. Agree on Conflux being spam though.
My biggest mistake with Heroes 3 was that the first one i played was Shadow of Death. It was by far the best campaign and setting they made for H3, that every other one i played later on seamed like a big let down. Especially the original Restoration of Erathia.
I think that if this game came out today as an indie title it would still be a hit. An epitome of a timeless masterpiece 🤗
Great stuff here, it brought back that nostalgia feeling... Enough so that I've started asking myself how well do I understand the lore of these series and how it connects different games? Could not find a good explanation video so had to do them myself - would be humbled if anyone decided to take a look and tell me what their thoughts were on the timeline of events!
I will let my son/daughter play with this including Diablo 2, Battle Realms, Red Alert, Counter Strike, Half Life, Max Payne and all the good stuff we grew up playing

Best one, never gets old, I played it for the first time back when I was 6-7. One of the best games ever made. I played WoG but I'll have to try out Horn of the Abyss. Never really cared that much for the campaigns, even though I played and loved a few of them, and the fact you could combine artifacts to create really powerful ones... I mainly played the random generated map...As awesome as HOMM3 music is, HOMM4's soundtrack is better.
Horn of the Abyss is superb, in line with M&M lore (so unacomn could prolly play it without going berserk) and shall deliver us an actual proper Forge faction as it was intended...someday.

This game doesn't deserve first impression review of the longest tangent I've heard about how you couldn't run it at the time.
Crap, I also remember when playing VTM:Bloodlines back in the day, and I had to look at the ground in the street levels because otherwise the framerate would drop too low... :(

it was the too early adoption of MP3 instead of CD audio that made it slow. I recompressed the MP3s to lower bitrate and was fine even on Pentium 75. (but the AI took long to think)

I don't understand the first few minutes of this video. You talk a lot about resolutions and art style or something? At the same time, you mentioned high resolutions, which would be a problem if you play the game today, but then you mention the monitor that exploded from 1024x768, which wouldn't probably be long time ago. You had a monitor that had 2k resolutions, in what year? Also, I haven't noticed unrefined edges on units, maybe my monitor today is not big enough to notice.
I really like what you mentioned about the foundry(forge) problem and the death threats. It would have been great. I like conflux because it's overpowered but it doesn't make much sense. There's a bit of steampunk and sci-fi in many fantasy series and they worked alright. Kreegans were already aliens, this wouldn't be very weird.
And the ending, about the mod that makes heroes 3 look like heroes 2! That was great. I was helping on that project, for a while. I am not sure if it was ever finished. There was a lot of issues and we weren't really sure what the main idea of the mod really is, how to make it balanced. Should we have flying units that fly everywhere, how would spells work, should we have might and magic heroes on every faction, etc. and of course, is this all possible to mod? Those changes would be so drastic, it would be nearly impossible without the source code.
Solmyr was the ultimate starting hero. Also the elf for the Rampart with Logistics.

Was cool to hear someone echo my thoughts on forge, loved the idea of having creatures from all sides being abducted and made into some monstrosity. If I could have 1 question answered from the devs, it might be what was the tier 7 forge creature going to be, in the original screenshot you can see the dwelling was called a runway so it was probably flight capable, I know the mod team I found just slapped a heroes 4 style dragon golem in there and called it a day, would've still tried it if I could figure it out.Is WotG required in order to use modded towns or can they be used in hota and I just couldn't figure it out?
To me, heroes 3 lives on because of the great community. It's a great game, but vanilla heroes 3 with no expansion is rather dull. Hota has done a great job of nerfing factions and made great content for replay value. I adore cove and its units, its theme is great. Also the succession of war mod changes the graphics to heroes 2 style. Heroes is a good game, and stylewise i havent tried anything that comes close to. But it's the modding teams and community that makes it keep on thriving imo.

I kid you not, I only realized about a year or two ago that her hair isn't green in that portrait, that's her cloak.
I couldn't disagree more about their being too much content with the game (dragons/golems, in fact, I wish that they had added two MORE options alongside the gold and diamond variants). That being said, the Conflux emphasis on elementals was rather lack-luster in some ways (though the unique nature of the upgrades was much appreciated)

Shadow Zaron I guess random would be good to get back into it, but I never finished the campaigns as a kid and wanted to now. Do the different campaigns increase in difficulty? I started with the base game barbarian campaign (on normal). That mod looks worthwhile though, will have to check it out.
Malus i would guess going off of gaming as a whole that ya they get harder. I don't do the campaigns because i like the freedom of a random vs the required this and that of campaign. Horn of the abyss is a blast new castle/campaign new creatures new artifacts and a new auto resolve battle where the game resolves it and you can either accept or deny the results. No more wasting time killing a pack of pikemen. It is the same for hero battles with the awesome ability to fight and if you mess up you deny the results and fight again until your happy with it and the stat buffs/negatives don't change. Let's say you are facing a hero with a bunch of thunderbirds and thinking they can't reach you in one turn you ignore them but randomly they get a extra move via morale and wreck your units you can re do the fight knowing those birds are going to get a extra move and prepare for it. It's very cool. Same goes for you if your wolf riders get a added move you didn't realize you can redo and use it to your advantage

I hate ppl talking about game when they dont even know how to actually play the game xd there is HD mod that speeds everything u want and fits to your resolution. Seeing that noob gaming makes me cry its shame for you.
To be fair, the threats were probably more for the topless tank lady and less for the sci-fi style, though i might be wrong.

I actually like 6 a lot, a lot health and different strategies but it is very quick, usually you just need to get a few good battles against AI to win but even if army strength is the same if you play smart you can win with minimal loses by my experience

This has been driving me nuts. Dies anyone remember what game focused on a barbarian that hated magic? I remember as a kid the intro cinematic had him charging into battle while smiling like a goofball surrounded by hobgoblin.

I think HoM&M3 is definitely the best one in the context of when it was released, and I loved it when I played it, but I can't get back into it since getting Heroes 5. I'll save what I have to say about that for your 5 video.
The Conflux faction does suck though. Perhaps they could have reworked Forge into a steampunk or an "technology created from magic" aesthetic.
5 is excellent especially with the expansions but I hate the long AI loading, can't stand it. So I almost always play 3 instead of little bit of this and that. :(
@@xCori91x if you still play homm 5, then I suggest you get the mod called homm 5.5, it makes the ai much faster and better!
Thrashing companies for not improving an already extremely complex game is baffling. If we ever want a similar game on the market, we have to increase the price for the development of such game. If we pay 1000$ for such a game, I'm sure tomorrow a studio will decide to make such game. Otherwise companies in games industry will just try to tweak something and get some small prizes made out of selling that tweak for 15-20$. Developing h3 today would take a couple of years for a team of 10 programmers to master the game starting just from mastering just c++. The graphics would also need a couple of artists working full time job in this period of time, starting with some knowledge of photoshop. At the end of these years of work, you hope that the product is fun, or be ready to spend more time and money to tweak it until it is great enough to be enjoyed by the public. The whole problem is the fact that the consumer pays a low price for the games up front and much much more on in-game consumables/graphical customization etc and companies are not encouraged to risk and develop something more unique/complex.

The only thing it resulted in, was a subpar product and franchise derailed from its tracks, never to recover. A damn shame.
It should be mentioned though, that developers took their fans for granted here. Not nearly all of RPG crowd played Heroes, not nearly all of Heroes' fans played M&M. It resulted in a fair proportion of the fanbase being only vaguely aware of the lore overlap, and caring little or nothing about it.
Dunno... if they wanted the Armageddon's Blade to continue on Evil M&M ending it should have been referenced in the intro cinematics of Restoration of Erathia. Just a couple seconds of villainous strangers with laser guns, while Queen Catherine is making a landfall, would have been enough for players to be aware of the paradigm shift soon to occur.

Well, Foundry was a bad idea. I like that we got Conflux. References are fine, but technology surely does not belong in a HOMM game.
I also like the art style of 3 more. That's probably because M&M6-7-8 all were a part of my youth.
Have you played the mod for Heroes 3 that plays the Heroes 2 factions?

I grew up with Heroes 2, and I've always found it a little hard to adjust to Heroes 3. The sheer amount of content makes it a bit harder to get a handle on things the way I could in the first two games, and it can feel a bit messy and unfocused at times. The art and general style of the game also feels a bit less striking to me. (The towns are pretty but I always get lost in them cause the buildings don't feel very distinct)
It could just be that the massive amounts of hype and love this game gets makes the stuff I don't like too much more apparent to me. It's still a great game in the end and I definitely wanna play it more!
I wish Wake of Gods wasn't an unstable bug riddled mess and almost unplayable at multiplayer. Outside of that, the mod is goddamn fantastic. HotA isn't nearly as good IMO.
Meh, art style is kinda subjective. I prefer 3 personally. But then, I didn't play 2 until much much later (since 3 was already mainstream when I picked up the series) so... that probably affect opinion on art styles.
The inventory isn't unlimited... at least not in the base game. I have maxed it out like once... It doesn't tell you it's maxed, it just won't let you put more stuff in.

In regards to HoMM 7, I've heard good things about it more recently, after numerous official patches, and with the use of the Unofficial Community Patch. I've seen some people say it's alongside 3 and 5 in terms of mechanical quality, which is pretty high praise. It seems the biggest problem with the game was a lack of polish, but HoMM 4 also lacked polish, and you liked that, so I find it likely that you'd find enjoyment out of the game.
I stopped playing after spending about 8 hours on a game and find out I can't complete it...
The road that connects my "half" of the map to the other is bugged, with a part that have too steep an incline to actually pass and... since there is no teleport in 7, I'm stuck.
That said, I did enjoy the game until that point, including many previous games. It's not perfect but it's not bad so meh...
Hm, how recent was this? Was this after all of the official patches (the last one was in late 2016)? Did you use the Unofficial Community Patch? And if you were using the UCP, it might be wise to report that to the patch's developers.

It was the Uplay edition, not from steam, if that make any difference.
Hmm, while I was looking into this, I found several people who complained of a level in one of the campaigns where they couldn't figure out how to get the other side of the map. Turns out, at least in this case, that it wasn't a bug, it's just that there is only one way to the other side of the map, and it is very hard to spot.

HoMM 7 is sadly very bad... Sadly :( less mechanics, retarded AI, few maps, hero leveling is nothing exicting, very easy difficulty (it was very buggy, sound cutting off, or just no sound, animations lacking etc, I don't know if they patched these but the game mechanics still suck). Ubisoft stopped patching the game after 1 year of release just after the release of the Expansion. The game was hyped up too much, too much was promised and almost nothing delivered. I cannot recommend buying it for a full price, maybe for a discount, but even then...
storywise, Heroes IV was better than III
everything was so well written, so pleasent to read
but Heroes 3 had great cinematics and fantastic ost (not as good as II though)
personally 2-3-4 are the only good heroes in the franchise
5 6 and 7 were WoW artstyle made by a Ubitard writers with very little talent or passion
sometimes i wonder what would've happened if someone else bought the rights to the franchise...

Homm v is pretty decent with the homm 5.5 mod.
Oh yea it is Homm III most praised due to gameplay+combat. But, Homm IV storyline, campaign and no doubt Paul anthony romero push the nostalgic higher on Homm IV highest one of the best but combat is Homm 3.

HOM&M 2 and 3 were both very good games, some of the best games that were released in their time. 2 slightly better, but 3 not far behind, for the time of their release.
Adrian A some would argue 3 over 2 and even i struggle to argue that with my pure love for 2
3 built on top of 2 , improved many things, specially graphics visuals, also added in content, diversified more. But... its 2 that solidified that style of game, and made it a classic series ... those vampires, those dragons, bone dragons, the skeletons... the strenght of Diplomacy skill, i'll hardly forget.
p.s. the funny part is I discovered HOM&M 2 ... only a long time later, after the launch, so I actually played it later when games started to look a bit better graphically , and still I found it one of best games then .
oh I agree fully my fellow heroes fan. I still very love 2 no doubt about it. I honestly just got done playing a sorcerous yesterday. I don't think i'll ever stop playing 2. I really truly wish they could have the random map generator in 2.. 2 has too many few maps of a variety in my opinion. I like large or extra large with the ability to choose my castle and have it the good old all castles all heroes and win and there are only a few of those and it is not hard to run out and just go "ugh done this already" I was just actually debating 4 for some strange reason.. didn't like it my first time years ago but I wonder now..

hehe yea... after 3, something stopped working with the series . I cant put my finger on what.... this video has some ideas here and there.
You know what I think the series needed to progress and stay relevant .... some RPG elements added to the heroes. And specially for the main hero which could have something like an extra tree for controlling the secondary heroes. Some nice variation and different skill trees to build a strong hero would have been nice, in combination with the classic monster turn base battle. But lets just say they make it a lot harder , so that the more important hero can make sense, some abilities would be good still to boost your troops of course not just some OP magic skills and thats all you do with hero. But I would also like the hero to get more relevant during battles, make enemy way stronger so that you have to build a good skill tree to survive in combination with the kind of army you build. Yep... I would like to see such a Hom&m game.
I.m.o the company just went downhill after there greatest 3rd edition. They should redo the 3rd making more add ons and cool storyline dlcs and more artefacts to combine and not mods made by others
Hopefully no more Heroes will be ever released. I don’t trust Ubisoft. I wonder how they managed to deliver with Heroes 5.
