  • In today’s episode Chris Harris chats with Andrew Frankel, renowned automotive journalist and co-founder of Drive Nation. In this bumper broadcast the pair get to grips with Lewis Hamilton’s controversial win at the Canadian GP, what they hate about modern car design and their favourite stories about the Millbrook Bowl, as well as discussing a BMW that looks like a bottom and their shared passion for pistons.

    I was the bloke who went off in the Renault 19 16v on Autocar’s ‘Black Monday’ on the way to Millbrook Proving Ground. As Andrew correctly recalls I climbed out through the passenger side window, put the hazards on and even pulled the hand brake on! Thought that was the end of my job on the Autocar & Motor road test desk....thankfully, it wasn’t. Great memories!

    This was such a breath of fresh air. Thank you Both! Never stop these podcasts even if the views are low. Those who've discovered them enjoyed them immensely. Chris, you better mention these podcasts on your instagram and youtube (videos) to let people know about them.

    These are real Petrolhead discussions. I've loved every episode, especially ones with all the old school journalists that have came on and discussed how the automotive industry and automotive journalism have evolved over the last 25+ years. The Harry Metcalfe episode moved me, this one 15 minutes in is immensely captivating as well.

    My son age 17 has no interest in motor sport and neither do any of his friends. they also have no real interest in cars or bikes, though my son oddly really likes US cars particularly from the 70s. I say oddly only because he has been fortunate to be around some interesting cars i have owned in the past. namely 2005 Vanquish S, 997 Turbo Man,XJ220, 62 E-type Coupe to name just a few. I still remind him he fell asleep in the vanquish when he was 11. I grew up on a council estate and the highlight of the weekend was a trip in dads 69 2nd hand ford capri. I used to sit for hours on the army and navy roundabout in Chelmsford just in the hope of seeing a cool car.. times have changed .

    Like others, I've only recently discovered these Collecting Cars podcast/ video thingies, so while I'm late to the gig I want all involved to know that we ordinary schlubs out here appreciate them.
    I don't know if Andrew or Chris will ever see or read this comment, but on the off-chance they do...
    I knew the Frankel name from FF Publishing and CAR magazine in the 80s/ early 90s - in a strange way, this ties in with another podcast on here where Harris talks with Dickie Meaden about EVO and car journalism and why print magazines used to (and still can) enthrall in a way that video and online content can't. I used to scour local newsagents in the late 80s/ early 90s for that month's CAR magazine, it was that good - not just for the cars and the tests (and GBU for a giggle) but also the photography and the layout, but mostly it was for the contributors and the quality of their writing. Steve Cropley, LJK, Bulgin, Phil Llewellyn, Colin Goodwin, George Bishop, Richard Bremner, Brett Fraser, Gavin Green - even Rowan Atkinson and James May - wrote for CAR back then, and it showed in the circulation figures, and there are good reasons why those names are still bywords for great car journalism. I've still got dozens of copies of CAR from that period that I occasionally dust off and re-read for the umpteenth time because the writing is so good (and a few contemporary issues of Performance Car bought initially for the rantings of another brilliant car journalist, J. Clarkson Esq.)
    @24:30 or so re: Andrew's mention of early 60's Hondas. I don't want to bore people (I often do), but the 6-cylinder 4-stroke bike mentioned was more likely to have been a 250 (the RC166); Honda also made the RC149 which was "merely" an inline 125cc inline 5. Either way, they both sound (and are) fantastic machines built to an unimaginable standard 50 years ago. Electric motors were around then too, but for all their effectiveness (which is considerable) they don't make me want to see and hear them tearing round the IoM TT circuit. If you haven't already done so, search on youtube for early 60s Honda TT bikes
    I've bored on too long so I'll stop now, save to say that Andrew and his father were (and are) far more influential than mere reading of their biographies might indicate.

    Have only just stumbled across this series of podcasts, so I'm late to the party. I don't go out my way to look for F1 reviews or discussions, but that was the only frank, honest and insightful discussion about F1 that I've found. Lewis has morphed into a mid-atlantic robot - making mistakes is what being a human being is all about and makes things more interesting. The only light in F1 is Verstappen.
    F1 without Ferrari and Mercedes would be a glorious thing. I thought Ross Brawn was bought in to clip wings and he's done nothing.

    Great video - I will be interested to see if the Valkyrie is as fast as the T.50S

    • @stephen2282
      @stephen2282 Рік тому

      I'm assuming you're referring to the AMR track version of the Valkyrie as that would be a more apt comparison. But either way it seems in both instances Adrian/Aston is starting with a more aggressive car than Gordon. note that I'm talking the "regular" Valkyrie vs the "regular" T.50 and the AMR pro vs the T.50s. For instance, the T.50 might have a more aggressive diffuser profile than the Valkyrie (obviously aided by the fan) but the Valkyrie by virtue of just having more volume seems like affords it a higher performance ceiling.
      So I guess the question should be more like is the T.50s as fast as the AMR pro?

  • @nathanchildress5596
    @nathanchildress5596 2 роки тому

    I understand I’m quite late to this, but if anyone wants to know the T50’s rear fan can switch between a downforce mode and a mode which extends the airflow on the rear end to increase aerodynamics and efficiency. It’s just clever enough to not be a gimmick

    What the hell is a "Turbo Technics Minka?" I googled it, but to no avail.

    • @mark4lev
      @mark4lev 11 місяців тому

      What’s the time stamp? Turbo technics was a company in the 80’as that designed / fitted thier own aftermarket bolt on turbo set ups. The minker I think was based on the sierra xr4x4 v6. So it used the cosworth drivetrain including horrible mt75 gearbox. The total price including doner car was actually more than a cosworth which is puzzling .

    Disagree with their take on the Canada decision (Vettel punishment should've been harsher), but I would love an extension to this where they discuss what they think of the current F1 season as it stands now. Lot more excitement and action since this was published.
