Im 16 years old and junior in high school and have been really sick the last 4 years. I've had over 50 surgeries, 10 pic lines and a medi port. I have been nursing for 24 years and always enjoy working with male nurses. I teach now and throughly encourage men to go into nursing! Most males prefer to work in the high acuity departments (ER, ICU, OR, Trauma Units etc) We need you and we want you!!!
Hi Cheyenne. Im almost done with my BSN. Nursing school will teach you how to prioritize a large workload and manage your time efficiently. The material is not difficult but important. Best decision of my life.
I will be done with my first semester in Nursing School after my final on Monday. My first path did not lead me to nursing... But here I am now.. and it was the best decision I have ever made. I am not much of a sensitive person, but just after one semester in nursing and seeing patients I have grown to be a better person! I would highly recommend nursing school for anyone who wants to make a positive influence on the world and yourself!
I'm planning to major in nursing and at first I was like "Wouldn't it be too tough for me to handle?" But the more I look into it the better I wanna do this. I think it truly is one of the most awesome jobs out there.
This was almost my exact story! I went for physical therapy and once I was in it, didn't like what I was doing and the pace but no question I wanted to stay in healthcare. Spent about four years trying to find where I fit, did phlebotomy in the hospital and came across nursing. I'm now in nursing school and starting a job as an ED nurse tech and am working toward ED nursing.
For those of you considering going into nursing, have faith in yourself. You can do it, they will teach you, but mostly it will all be learned on the job anyway. Don't let any nurses that may be burnt out or in the wrong field or simply having a bad day make you question whether you want to go into this field. It will be what YOU make it and how YOU treat YOUR patients.
I love being a male nursing student, i can't wait! For the first time in 27 years i'm finally in a field filled with people like me, and i feel great. Now if i can just learn how to do well on nclex style exams...
Im a male nurse and have been doing for a few years now. Before i was in the service for eight years. I have found that when i work with other male nurses the day flows better.
This is the area which will give you the feeling that you are really saving lives..
i regret i did not pursue nursing, i am probably in america now.. but anways..glad to see there are people who made it and stands this profession as i find it really one of the hardest job..thanks for this people who's aims are to save lives...
I work with nurses at a nursing school -- it's a wonderful goal to be a nurse, and you will be a great one because you have an understanding of what patients need. Best of luck in your studies and keep on going.

Nice job Will, I have been an ER nurse for 15 years. You did a great job conveying some of the public misconceptions not only about nursing and gender but also in conveying what ER nurses do! There are a lot more men going into nursing now and I think public perception is slowly changing.
As far as I know, most programs require the student to take a college-level algebra course as well as a statistics course for pre-requisites. It is important to have these skills down because you will take medication-calculation exams and of course, know how to calculate dosages when you are giving patient care. If you are considering this path, I say go for it! I'm proud that I did :)

I hate the thought of becoming a nurse but this guy definitely sold it to me...still not doing it but he did a great job.
Great video Will. It's great to see other guys in nursing. Nursing is definitely one of the best professions in the world and we need so many more guys going into the profession. I am consolidating in the emergency department right now and it is so interesting and exciting. There are so many great nurses (both M and F) who are willing to teach and show me the ropes. For any young men and women thinking of this as a profession, I say go for it. The schooling is tough but the job is rewarding X100
Better to be a Nurse Practitioner than a Doctor anyways, which is why I am heading there. Less school, better pay, and you still are hands on with patients.

NPs can make well over 100,000 a year, but a surgeon, for example can earn 3 to 5 times more than that!

i dont know if you will see this but look into nurse practitioner grants once you are done with schooling. it can pay for up to 80,000 of your loans

+Tatiana Burke Not true in many cases. I've noticed many people encourage nurses (male and female) to become Doctors, rooting from not appreciating the culture of nursing in itself and not so much because of sexism. That being an MD is more fulfilling for someone just because of the Title.

Ellie Carver think again I work in a very busy acute medicine unit and emergency department and nursing I wouldn't say is fun well I rephrase that it can be fun but it's very long hours I do a minimum of 12 hours a day it's tiring and can be very stressful try and get into a hospital to see what it's like I can see your in the UK as you mentioned GCSE I work in the U.K. And from the uk and I know that the NHS can provide shadow experiences were you go behind the scenes and see how things happen in a hospital don't get me wrong it's a fantastic and extremely rewarding career to be in and if it's what you really want then go for it but don't jump into it thinking it's fun they is many many hours of study and taking hours to become a nurse try looking at more videos of uk hospital nursing as in the U.K. It's very different to America as we don't carry stethoscopes on us nor do we wear scrubs

Your math depends on your school's technical requirements. There is a pharmacology portion of your education and you will learn to calculate dosages and its basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Though, your university might require you to take a useless finite mathematics or statistical math course. If its a special IT school to become an RN then you just need basic math and english under your wing.
My school only requires up until algebra 1 so everywhere is different.

thats the kind of nurse i like to see.....i usually prefer a male nurse over a female nurse a lot of times (in my experience) they are way more sincere in their work...and if u dont have that fire that passion for caring for people then you are no good...

Male nurse makes the same as a female nurse as far as I have seen in the ER and the flight nurse usually requires some time spent in the ER and/or icu and your paramedic certification. im a guy, im a nurse (lpn, but im in a bsn program now), the patients always think im doctor. everything that u said is true. they ALWAYS ask me why don't I just go to medical school, but never ask the women. its cool, i work on a psych unit, and u never see the same thing. not many "medical intensive" issues, but still fun.
I finally graduated and I'm searching for a job. I want to work in a hospital and at the same time I don't want to. I'm so afraid! 5 years studying to be nurse and suddenly i'm my worst enemy.
Although I'm not in the nursing field (yet) I have graduated with a bs in Environmental Design, and the job I've been exposed to is unfulfilling. I feel at such am my own roadblock right now. I'm considering the medical field, but I'm not too sure what.

Accounting was my major, never finished life happened. I was working as an CNA. Then went to an accelerated PN, now in the ADN program.
If you have a Bachelor's Degree you can get your RN in 1 year at some Universities

its when everything was not done in a code that kept bothering me when ended up with a death instead.
HOnestly, I've been looking into becoming a nurse and it seems very rare to find positive feedback about it. Most nurses seem to hate their job and don't recommend it. A big complaint seems to be that hospitals understaff in order to make more profits, which causes patients to be at greater risk, and more work for the nurses. Are there actually nurses who like this career and recommend it? Because most of what I've read is terrible. Not trying to be a downer, it's refreshing to hear some good.
I am a 30 year. RN If you can do another job I would.

ER nursing loses its thrill value after a few years. You get tired of dealing with the same drama: drunk, manipulative, patients. Long waits and angry patients. Drug seekers and patient complaints, the list goes on and on
That's why nursing is so great
If you get tired of ER nursing you can switch to icu, pediatrics, med surg, etc......
Med surg is not a place you switch to; it's a place you switch from.
well the beaty is that after u get ur adrenaline rush satisfied and u get some good experience u can move into a different area of Nursing like cardiology or I.C.U. or even flight nurse. sky's the limit with Nursing career.
Hey roo718roo ... I know its hard to go through what your going through, I can relate to that hole process and at 16 your are an amazing brave young person. I know god doesn't put anyone through tough situation if he knew they couldn't handle it.. and even you been told you don't have long, don't believe in it.. Believe you will live a long time, and believe in that dream of being a RN.. May god help and provide you with health. As for what you said of having wonderful RNs I know I met some too.

As a nursing student I will tell you that that's a really ignorant comparison as they are entail completely different scopes of practice despite inter-crossing on a daily basis. I say that because questions like that are normally said out of ignorance to the types of careers and practices in healthcare. Patient care versus treating disease, to answer your question bluntly.

I got a question. I heard of this before is it true places like the ER the nurses can do things without the doctors orders like place IV's and order tests to be done. I thought the nurse could not do a single thing with a doctors orders. What do you mean they have protocols in use.

I don't have to do research I do this everyday. I have been a nurse for 32 probably longer than you have been living. Yes I do work in the ER . The reality of nursing is not what they teach you in school. Working at a level one trauma center holding average 60 at all times speaks for its self. Research does not tell you about doing CPR in the hallway because you don't have a room to put the pt. in. Average 1 nurse leaving a week. Very high pt acuity to nurse ratio this is the New Way Nursing is going. Your career choice is your decision . Good Luck :)

ER and ICU nurses are among the most intelligent AND friendler staff members in the hospital! Telemetry nurses tend to be more lazier and not as caring... at least in my experience of working with them. Had a situation in a hospital where a patient from the ER that I worked at was transferred to the floor with an active infection of the foot... they didn't even bother to get his CBC until a doctor showed up some time later!

Does one have to become a RN in order to become a ER Nurse? or is there a specific path necessary? please, I would appreciate any information that might help me.
+thatfishbreeder Usually ERs hire a couple of LPNs, but you might as well get your RN for more job opportunities, and of course more pay.
+thatfishbreeder you would go to nursing school (either ADN or BSN), graduate, take the NCLEX, and you are an RN. You can apply to any RN job after that, so you can apply to an ER in a hospital as an RN and if hired, you will be an ER nurse.

Yes! And you will also learn a lot in nursing school to prepare you, but you do get training specifically for whatever job you choose once you are an RN. Nurses are taught in nursing school to go into any realm of nursing - whether it's ER, ICU, Medsurg, Psychiatric, Maternity, Pediatrics, etc.
