I watched this on the FIS youtube this morning and was aprehensive hearing there was only one practice run in order to save the course.
It is a fast downhill with lots of blind, high speed, rolling turns. The commentator expressed this race will probably be investigated with all the DNF's

I have worked many lower level races as a professional Ski Patroller. On the more competitive races we can't even touch the racer unless the Coaches say we can. Probably an ill advised decision to start but what do any of us know what pressures they are facing to push out of the gate. Although at different courses, the track and dynamics of Mikaela's and Alek's crash are eerily similar: both racers landed too far to the left after a downhill right jump, and then were unable to make the following downhill left turn because they were unweighted and off line.
I agree with those who wish MS would cease DH. The risk/reward ratio is poor, especially for someone possessing her slalom and GS talent.

On the other hand, it detracts somewhat from a skier's legacy when the career is limited to only technical, or to only speed events. The Mahre Bros., Marcel Hirscher, even Stenmark were a bit compromised by the fact they never, or almost never, attempted downhill events. The greats, and for me they would include Toni Sailer, JC Killy, Schranz, Bobby Cochran, Bode Miller, Vonn, Giardelli, Gustavo Thoeni, and really a host of other multidiscipline skiers (even Billy Kid) - are the real ski heroes. Not the specialists. So I give props, lots of props to MS for tackling a downhill.
And believe this -MS and her Mom and her coaches and all of Team Schiffrin Inc. looked very, very hard at the downhill beforehand - and recommended it as a winner for obvious reasons: lots of technical turns and probably not too high speeds. Conditions where MS could excel. Totally agree with your post she was off line.

The biggest and most important accomplishment in Alpine ski racing is the overall Crystal Globe. At this stage of the season it was imperative that she accumulate WC points in several speed events to be reasonably sure. It looks like the Italians are almost out of the running, but Lara Gut is well within striking distance of the overall.

That course was not set properly for that turn. That jump going to the turn is set too far to the left doesn’t give the racers enough distance to correct the long air and rollers into the turn at 55 mph. They should have stop the race, fix it then restart the race.
Mikaela amand many good racers were too low off the jump then tried to correct it. Too late for the next turn at that 55 mph speed. Hope her injury is minor of just a strained tendon or muscle.

All races have safety plans to deal with racer down situations like this. The slip crew knows help is already on the way.
More generally: Look at 00:39. A downhill course is usually icy and steep. If someone tries to walk over, they will likely fall and be sliding down the hill. AJ Hurt,
I watched your second run in the WC FIS GS at Are today Mar. 9, 2024 several times. You made a number of mistakes. The most general was that you did not adjust your line higher as the slope steepened. Therefore you tended to be in the wrong position on the gates that were about halfway down or more. This made you skid/brake more. It put you out of position more. Probably as a result, there was one really bad turn sideways after a big skid/braking probably due in part to your too low line in that area. Partly the over skid and almost wipeout at that point was due to your turning sideways on the hill at that point. You want to always keep your upper body headed down the hill. Otherwise you tend to lean into the hill. That makes you lose your ski grip further on the hill. In other words you have to be leaning a bit down the hill with your upper body in order to get a good grip on the snow/ice. This makes your edges cant further away from the hill. That gives you better edge grip with your weight more fully on the edges (you then get say a 45 degree edge angle as opposed to a 20 degree edge angle that you get when you lean into the hill). Almost wiping out cost you a good amount of time.
My fourth grade teacher had a saying, "Trifles make perfection, and perfection is no trifle." She was right as always. Best Wishes, David White

@@blindleader42 The overall world cup was almost a certainty.
But why should she not race some speed events? She has done one downhill so far this season. Guess her place.
I'm sure she was aiming for Maze's seasonal point recod (2414) and to get 100 world cup vicories as soon as possible. And then? 200 victories is out of reach. 150?

@@keinKlarname Lara Gut-Behrami was, and is still in striking distance.
I guarantee that in no way, shape or form has she ever considered attacking Maze's point record. She was tired after Kranjska Gora, and decided to skip Altenmarkt-Zauchensee in order to get and extra day or two of rest and more training.

Praying that Mikaela is not seriously injured. Wish her a fast & full recovery. Not sure why this course is so suspect & in my mind needlessly dangerous. Every year these course designers keep trying to push the envelope. Will a skier have to die to stop this madness. This is NOT enjoyable for me after some 50 yrs. of watching this sport. This daredevil type skiing is so unnecessary to showcase the beauty, intricacy & athletic challenge of a course or to showcase the best skiers. Investigating the course after a serious injury or death is too late. Fix the darn course stop the madness. Not appealing at all.

Arrows should be drawn on the fence to indicate the direction of travel just in case a competitor momentarily loses concentration due to a critical event and may turn in the wrong direction in confusion. This is exactly what you can see in the video. Otherwise, the competitor quickly realizes the mistake, but it is already too late to correct the course. She tried to alleviate the situation with a controlled fall...
