🤰 Why would a pregnant guppy abort its own children? The simple answer is stress. I’ve had two experiences where stress overtook two momma Guppies’ pregnancies. The first case was moving stress. About 7 years ago I saw a SUPER pregnant momma guppy at the fish store and I wanted her - so I took her home! Within 15 minutes she had prematurely given birth in the bag. I got super lucky that most of the babies were already fully developed or else I would have lost them all (spontaneous abortion). The second case was very recent. Coraline (one of the female blue koi guppies) was close to giving birth but towards the end of pregnancy, I noticed her belly deflating. After two days there was no more gravid spot and she was back to being flat. She had completely absorbed her babies (stress defense mechanism). I assume this happened because of the stress that came from being constantly chased by the males in the tank. Poor water quality, breeder boxes, and bright lights can also cause unintentional guppy abortions. It often happen in pet stores sadly, pets are mixed between males and females and not neutered yet so if some of them started puberty early you can accidentally buy a pregnant pet. Pets from stores also had terrible breeding conditions so it's not a good choice, either go to an animal shelter or at least meet the breeder yourself.

A part of the reason why fighting betta fish need to be separated after mating is the females have a tendency to eat their own eggs, which leads to the male killing the female to protect his offspring. Cousin primates to humans may sometimes be under such duress that spontaneous abortions (miscarriages) become more likely.

Sometimes a fetus dies in utero, which can have several outcomes: the body yeetus the fetus (aka miscarriage) or mom goes into premature labour and births a stillborn, OR, very rarely, the body reabsorbs part of the fetus and calcifies the rest. Calcification means that the fetus gets covered with a hard calcium, bone-like shell, in order to protect the mother from toxins that would otherwise be produced as the fetus decomposes. The woman in question had the thing inside of her for more than 50 years I believe? But that said, this is exceptionally rare.

Are you serious? I got scolded as a kid for calling miscarriages abortions. Now I do think it's better to differentiate because a miscarriage is out of your control and an abortion is a choice. With animals it’s just instinctual; it’s a hardwired behavior built into them. With HUMANS- It’s a choice to to PURPOSELY or just CARELESSLY conceive and face the consequences later.
You can use contraception, the fish can't. Also it was not a concious decision from the fish. It happens to humans as well that we have a miscarriages due stress.

It's rare but this can happen. With allll contraception, failure can happen. That's why plan B and other methods are important. No one is currently petitioning for better quality of life for all the kids in the foster or adoption system. The system is overloaded and these kids are overlooked.

Just to clarify, miscarriage isn't the same as an abortion. Miscarriages happen because the body rejects the offspring for whatever reason. Abortion is the intentional ending of a pregnancy and the surgical removal of the unborn offspring. If a fish "aborted" it's OWN babies, then it most likely laid eggs first and ate them after they were fertilized, which does happen sometimes with some kinds of fish.

My fish had a miscarriage, it was rlly pregnant and one of the other fish had been hitting it for weeks and it poked it rlly hard so the Prego fish flew across the tank and it’s stomach ripped open as dead baby fish scattered everywhere. It had a scar on its stomach and sadly passed away a few days later😢

You know the difference between miscarriage and abortion right? Probably not since many are trying to twist them up and confuse. We're not fish first off. I don't know much about them either but if they can absorb their babies because of stress and premature give birth without intervention, then they have that natural mechanism. In humans, females don't absorb their offspring, at least not that I know of. But have heard about twins and one dying and being absorbed by the other twin, so there's that. It's not a choice that can be made but a process that occurs. There are miscarriages and premature births, both of which arent fully understood as to why, but stress, poor nutrition, etc can be big factors. As for these fish, are they actually "choosing" to abort? Or is it actually miscarriage/premature birth that happens naturally? Stress in the human body, will naturally use up more of your minerals. You burn through your minerals and vitamins much faster because your body is doing it's best to function as normally as possible for you. I'd imagine it's the same for most creatures. The less minerals you have, which if you are defiencient can lead to symptoms and worsen if your not aware and be the reason illness shows up. Your body cant run properly because it's lacking. Abortion is seeking out a procedure, a drug, some sort of outside intervention to kill your offspring. Not the same thing here. Both cases, the fish were stressed and their system naturally intervened to keep it alive and might of not have enough resources to also give to the offspring. These fish aren't out here thinking, let me get rid of these kids cus Im broke and want to go to college and have fun. It doesn't make sense from an evolutionary perspective for fish or creatures in general choose to abort their offspring. Pro life is against intentional murder of innocent human life with rights. A human rights issue.

Adding water, salt, a small heater , aeration and brine shrimp eggs. Much less expensive to hatch them yourself and fish love them.

Just to clarify, miscarriage isn't the same as an abortion. Miscarriages happen because the body rejects the offspring for whatever reason. Abortion is the intentional ending of a pregnancy and the surgical removal of the unborn offspring. If a fish "aborted" it's OWN babies, then it most likely laid eggs first and ate them after they were fertilized, which does happen sometimes with some kinds of fish.

My fish had a miscarriage, it was rlly pregnant and one of the other fish had been hitting it for weeks and it poked it rlly hard so the Prego fish flew across the tank and it’s stomach ripped open as dead baby fish scattered everywhere. It had a scar on its stomach and sadly passed away a few days later😢

You know the difference between miscarriage and abortion right? Probably not since many are trying to twist them up and confuse. We're not fish first off. I don't know much about them either but if they can absorb their babies because of stress and premature give birth without intervention, then they have that natural mechanism. In humans, females don't absorb their offspring, at least not that I know of. But have heard about twins and one dying and being absorbed by the other twin, so there's that. It's not a choice that can be made but a process that occurs. There are miscarriages and premature births, both of which arent fully understood as to why, but stress, poor nutrition, etc can be big factors.
As for these fish, are they actually "choosing" to abort? Or is it actually miscarriage/premature birth that happens naturally? Stress in the human body, will naturally use up more of your minerals. You burn through your minerals and vitamins much faster because your body is doing it's best to function as normally as possible for you. I'd imagine it's the same for most creatures. The less minerals you have, which if you are defiencient can lead to symptoms and worsen if your not aware and be the reason illness shows up. Your body cant run properly because it's lacking.
Abortion is seeking out a procedure, a drug, some sort of outside intervention to kill your offspring. Not the same thing here.
Both cases, the fish were stressed and their system naturally intervened to keep it alive and might of not have enough resources to also give to the offspring. These fish aren't out here thinking, let me get rid of these kids cus Im broke and want to go to college and have fun. It doesn't make sense from an evolutionary perspective for fish or creatures in general choose to abort their offspring.
