    A suppressed .45-70 is Big Fun. A 450 grain cast flat nose at 1050 fps is a very capable hunting round, and is almost Hollywood quiet. You can certainly drive it faster, but at brush gun ranges it doesn't really matter...unless you decide to argue with a Cape Buffalo.
    About the lion...I don't care one way or the other, but I'd advise against posting such a hunt on any social media. I personally would not mention it again, because people can get awfully whacko sometimes about the oddest things...probably a result of watching too many Disney movies.

    • @richardmeyer418
      @richardmeyer418 Місяць тому +3

      Absolutely agree on this. People can become unhinged about lions for some reason. The normal life-cycle of a lion is to be cast out of the pride later in life and end up starving and being eaten alive by hyenas. Most Africans are way more pragmatic about lions and hunting them, but it appears to be a Western thing that lions are majestic. They smell of carrion, which is really just their nature, and they are NOT the king of beasts, but they have good PR.

    • @thedude777OP
      @thedude777OP 22 дні тому

      The African Lion is a keystone predator and important not only environmentally and culturally but historically for Humans. Nothing I say over the internet can stop someone from sneaking off and doing anything but it's rather arrogant to think that killing something that is already on the vulnerable tag of extestance is somehow acceptable. The idea of the majestic lion goes as far back as Rome and maybe even time immemorial, a true man of culture would respect this but some are lesser Europeans.

    Awesome rifle! I have one completely kitted out with Ranger Point stuff. With a scope, you'll need a cheek riser of some sort. Hopefully you got the Ranger Point adjustable buttstock, as I did. I also needed their additional cheek riser that bolts onto it. That combo works great. I put an old Burris 1-4x "intermediate" eye relief scope on mine, which is perfect for the round. No need for more than 6x on the top end for sure. I've found Accurate 5744 to be ideal with a hard cast 405 grain bullet in "mid-power" loads, by the way. Their data also indicates it will work fine with the 350. Enjoy!

    Ken Waters rates the Marlin 1895 as very strong. His top load for the Marlin was 42.0gr IMR-4198, 400-405gr Speer, W-W, R-P bullets, 1,760fps. These are not premium grade bullets like the Woodleigh, which is a necessity for Cape Buffalo. His absolute maximum, only in Ruger or Siamese Mauser was 48.0gr IMR-4198 with Speer 400gr for 2,027fps. A 500gr solid at minimum 2,000fps would be considered adequate for buffalo. Putting the ethics of shooting lions to one side, a 400gr premium grade bullet, if available, at +- 1,800fps would do the job.

    Cool gun, have you looked at the 325gr hornady ftx bullets? I am using these exclusively now, they have great performance on wild boars and big red stags. Also it is by far the best one ballistics wise. The bullet drop and energy retention is far better than normal flat nose hollow point. The bush performance is great while still having a good and reliably fragmenting bullet.

    I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with how well a quality red dot suits a lever gun. It keeps the profile of the rifle super low and the target acquisition time is second to none. For close range hunting you can't beat it, and the accuracy is surprising.
    Try Hornady 325 gr. FTX bullets, half inch groups at 50 yards for my setup. Though loaded hot they actually do kick more than you'd think even versus heavier 405 gr. and up. A more sharp kick instead of a forceful push.
    Congrats on the super nice rifle, I really want to see what it can do out there.

    These rail system hand guards are fine, if you need military/tactical accessories, but they ruin the smooth handling characteristics of the basic firearm. Guns with minimal protrusions and sharp edges - like an SKS, or tube-fed shotgun - are quick to grab and get on target. That lever gun looks perfect, as is.

    Not sure about varget. You might want to look into H4198. That’s what I use in mine and you can load all three power levels(trapdoor, modern lever gun, Ruger number 1) with that powder. With speer 400’s I was getting I think 1600 ft/sec and my plinking load was slightly less powder and a coated 405 cast bullet at 1150-1200. Great cartridge to reload and loads of fun to shoot.

    It's a tough one..but give context to the lion hunt...it's about time that someone explains to "bunny huggers" who live overseas and who view wildlife through rose tinted glasses, that unfortunately, when we opted to become their stewards, it entails hard choices.
    - Game needs to be profitable and sustainable or people will find other uses for the land- look north for references.
    - there are occasions when a lion has been evicted from the pride and as an ageing animal it has a slow death from starvation to look forward to.
    This is somewhat simplified but an analogy of letting your dog suffer or putting it down is perhaps one to be expanded on.
    My 2cents worth bud...

    In regards to shooting a lion and putting up on UA-cam: In short, don't do it.
    You will probably end up getting in a shitstorm and it might end up damaging your channel and business... I'm from Denmark, and the Danes that have put up trophies like lions and elephants on social media have regretted it deeply... The world is full of people who don't understand the nature of hunting and the logic behind shooting a lion that is past its prime, but those people have a big voice and may and up targeting you as their next scapegoat.
    Otherwise, great video! Love your stuff, and you are a great inspiration for my newly found hobby in PRS 😄

    Can you please explain in more detail why you would hunt a lion? I love hunting, I hunt what I can eat without wasting any exess, thus I only hunt antelope, and I varmint if some animal is becoming a pest, but I haven't heard of people eating lion? What happens to lion meat when they are hunted? Or is it only for the trophy or just to tick that box, an ego thing, or am I missing something? Would love to hear your thoughts.

I feel the story of conservation improvements that can be made by taking special animals like a lion is not well understood. I’m not sure what the background of this lion is but as an example, one old animal paid to be shot could contribute to raising three little cubs to be released. Would be interesting to know a little more about it

    If u r hunting to put food on the table that's a yes .
    If u r hunting to control a pest problem that's a yes .
    If u r Trophy hunting then that in my eyes is just as bad as a Serial killer .
    Providing meat for ur family is good but killing for no reason is bad!

    I’d say use a 1-6 with an illuminated reticle up top.
    Lots of people saying not to hunt lions. I’d say do what you please, but yeah leave that off UA-cam if you do it. It’d get you targeted without a doubt.
    Also, I know you’ll upgrade the parts on it, but you should hunt using both kits because they’re two different experiences

    My .45-70 Marlin Guide Gun shoots about 1.5 to 3" groups at 100 yards and a low power scope. I love Alliant Reloader7 powder for the .45-70 and you can load it from trap door level loads at 1600 fps to my load level which is a top end level power 2200 fps. My go to is the 350 gr. RNFP from Hornady and it keeps the velocity up so it gives a bit of extra flatness. If you start with 47 gr. of Reloader7 and the 350 it's my hunting load. If you want to plink you can use about 34 gr. Reloader7. 8) The .45-70 held the longest range shot for many decades if you look it up. In a sharps people have been shooting them easily to 700 yards and I've seen a few go to 1000 on buffalo size targets.

    What about the Vortex strike eagle 1-8 First vocal ? Regarding the potential Lion hunt if you dont feel comfortable to share it on the internet then dont. rather keep that video for in house. Rather have a story and not get dragged for it by uneducated people. Either way have fun Piet enjoy be safe.

    Full send on both hunts. You’re a responsible gun owner, going through proper licensing and you’re ethical with your shot placement. The risk is there, but thats how it should be. It’s a once in a lifetime hunt and I’d very much like to see it.
