Speaker settings probably have something to do with the crossover cutoffs on certain speaker.. anyway, cant compare to the 80 prs just because it gives you little distortion and high rca voltage, pioneer's 3-way parameters are a game changer!

Just found this vid and love it bro. Curious as to how the RCA output would compare with benchmarks from the old SQ decks like Nakamichi or Eclipse 5303R. Also, any idea on the output impedance of the RCAs. I know back in the day we measured my old Eclipse 5303R and the RCA outputs were 5 volt 55 ohm, whereas many of the other SQ decks only did 4 volt max around 110 ohm and the eclipse had the best output curve over the entire volume range compared to the others.

Isn't one of the main selling points of the 80PRS the audiophile internal components? There's no mention of these components on this unit. Granted it is about 1/6 - 1/8 the price of a second hand 80PRS, it is a bargain and gem as you stated.

  • @ruley73

There isn't a better value for a head unit with comparable features IMO. Regarding the use case with the sub RCA output and speaker output, just increase the sub output level at the head unit and turn the gain down at the sub amp to compensate. This might be tricky for the average Joe to get dialed in, but it would be worth doing. This gets you a hotter signal to the sub amp, which subsequently yields cleaner output in the end. Also, I may have missed it, but what were the EQ/sound enhancement settings when you were doing all these tests? Were all of them turned off and EQ was flat? Did you just test it with the default out-of-the box settings?

Damn, I have the KDC-X303. It's about identical, I think the only difference is the bluetooth chip is different. I must say I absolutely love this thing, had no idea it was an 80 PRS killer though, lol! I'm running NVX component 2 ways in my front doors, coaxial 2 ways in my rear doors, all off a Kicker CXA 300.4. My low end is a Skar SDR-12 D2 getting about 800 watts RMS off a Pioneer GM-D8601, in a Fox Acoustics ported underseat box for my quad cab Dodge truck. Gains set on a scope, verified it does go clean up to 35, though I don't run it that high. Sound quality has been absolutely great, and besides a software issue which was fixed with a quick update when I first got it, it's been rock solid. Assuming the only difference seems to be the bluetooth chip, if you really need to save a buck grab an X303. My buddy has an X302 in his BMW which seemed about identical when I went through the menus on it, not sure what the difference is for the X302. By the way if anyone has any strange settings menu issues with this, in my case I couldn't get into audio control sometimes, just update the firmware. Kenwood has the firmware and all the information on their website, it loads onto a USB flash drive. Great video, happy thanksgiving to everyone celebrating it today!

I've always used Alpine single DIN head units and they are bulletproof with great build quality. I picked up a nib Kenwood excelon x501 for my nephew that he had never used. Not quite an 80prs but definitely great budget head unit for SQ build or SPL build. I'm getting just over 4 volts pre out before clipping. Also very capable on the processing side of things with lots of features but definitely not Alpine build quality. From the volume knob to the buttons mushy and hard to turn almost crunchy LOL. They definitely could have put a rubber band around the volume knob so you can turn it but nevertheless it's a really good budget head unit. I think you could pick it up for $150 just a guess I forget what it was selling for.
Rob if you have the time I would love to see it tested.

Ran the X704 for a few days before switching it out. Not a fan of the sound even with EQ adjustment the highs were either overwhelming or the music sounded dull. Also at higher volumes the distortion was much more noticeable than the $100 ish JVC and Pioneer I tested before it. Same vehicle, speakers, etc. I'm running the 80 PRS and am much happier. First head unit I've owned that had virtually no audible distortion at near max volume using the internal amp.

The auto EQ feature is the reason you buy pioneer. It's sets up your DSP better than you ever could by ear, unless you are a master tuner. The problem is, people aren't used to hearing a well set up system, so they bash the Auto EQ. Even if you don't like the initial setup, all the settings are adjustable, so at the very least it sets up an incredible foundation to work with.
Volts and Watts are not how we measure sound quality. This is like eating chicken nuggets till you're stuffed, and saying you eat well. SQ nerds understand.

You should also test the RCA outputs under a load ( powering an amp ). Usually you will get different / more accurate or " Real world" numbers on voltage and at what volumes you reach it. Most electrical signals in general will change or act differently under a load. Just Fyi, Love the reviews!

Just open it, and do same on 80prs. You will see diference in quality parts. This Kenwood is waaay worse.
Currently is 80prs best 1 din radio in his price range. And for quite a lot of years now.
Decent sq sound and a lot of audio settings. Also multiline screen, which is today hard to find on 1din car radios.
His problem is not suporting Flac format, and now very popular spdif/coax digital output which doesn't have them.
Please be so kind and do some similar tests on new series of Joying Android 10!

My jvc kw-r940bts has pretty much the same settings. It’s a double din with a similar layout to your pioneer and was only $99. The stuff like car type and speaker size compensates for deficiencies and seems to work pretty well. If you have a passive front stage changing the tweeter size helps match their output to the mids. Overall I’ve been really impressed

80PRS KILLER.?? I think not!!! okay...Flac...if this would have a optical output it would win..But why put the volume at 75%? I had a pioneer prs80..and i gain matched it to full volume..Because the PRS does not distort at full volume...And when you take full volume on the headunit doesn't that mean less stress on the amps??

    • @HifiVega
      @HifiVega  3 роки тому +2

The reason I mentioned 75% volume is because that’s what a lot of manufacturers recommend when setting the gain. I suppose they assume you’re not setting the gain with an o scope or dd-1. But I set my gains the same way you do.

One DOPE feature this has is the Tweeter crossover. On passive component sets, the head unit will attenuate every frequency above the set point so that your tweeter doesn't get hit with too much power. This is much better than just an EQ because every frequency is affected evenly so dips aren't as prevalent

However, about 4 or 5 years ago, I did purchase the clarion eq7 and tested or ran other brands on the market and that was the best one of that style I tried out. Still have it and it still works.
