  • Stevenage, Hertfordshire and Crich, Derbyshire.
A story about a bus conductor whose hobby is making model trams, we also see life size running trams in the museum at Crich.
Various shots of Victor Whitbread as he makes his models and runs them around a track in his garden. We then see various shots of a tram running at the museum, men dig up the tracks at the side and repair them. Various shots of volunteers at work repairing seats, painting and polishing.
Various shots of trams in their shed and from inside a tram as it runs along the tracks. We see a tram being pulled by a cart horse.
Cuts exist - see separate record.

So much hard work in the early days. I'm very proud to be a volunteer conductor at Crich and passed my assessment on Glssgow 22!

Wonderfully patronising narration, but beautifully filmed. I've visited Crich (pronounced Krietch not Kritch) almost annually since 1969 and is a superb museum which reflects the efforts made, and expenses incurred, by those early volunteers.

Full marks for the volunteers, those at the beginning worked so hard to get it up and running. It is so different now, well worth a visit.

Excellent video. What is old is new again. Let's hope councils and governments don't make the mistakes of 50 years ago.

we kept our trams in melbourne australia, it's one of the biggest networks in the world if not the biggest, sydney ripped up theres in the 60's and run buses now ???

Over here in new zealand our choice to move to buses (more specifically the trolley buses) was understandable as rebuilding the network after no maintenance during the war left it in poor condition so many of the tramway operators went to Europe and saw the trolley buses to which started the removal of trams
Unfortunately they shut down due to hierarchy with the last line closing in 2018
Fortunately both transport systems have been preserved with even a city circle tramway created in Christchurch for tourists
