Victor Martin is a railway enthusiast who runs his own model railway. Various shots of Victor in guard's uniform in his office, he clips train ticket in machine and looks at his watch. He walks out onto the platform where people are waiting, the camera follows him to show he is actually in his garden with no track. He climbs a ladder to clean a full scale signal, there are various signs saying Beware of Trains etc.
Various shots of him and his wife with their model Midland and South East Railway which works exactly to 1948 St. Pancras timetable. He goes outside to clean the line when the train gets stuck, mice on the line are the biggest hazard for this railway.

I was lucky enough to be shown this railway by Vic and Lou Martin in August, 1975 when I was twelve years old.
That couple is serious about their model railroading.
One of my old friends used to go there and b a signal man . And if u was a visitor u was given a ticket . And some times in the bad fog public would turn up coss the place looked like a railway station
That is true, and it’s real love
I would do that
Whendid they die
@@oscarosullivan4513 I read in other comments on the BBC history UA-cam channel that he kept it running until 1986. His wife had passed on before him.
I really hope all that matériel and rolling stock has been kept and reused!
All the best,
Ian
How fantastic. Unfortunately, nowadays the media would label him as some sort of crank for having a passion about railways.
I have to take my hat off for their shear dedication to their hobby, and obsession. RIP Victor, and his wife.
Victor and his wife were clearly as mad as a box of Frogs... only the best of us are, its called dedication!! One Giant salute and a toot of my whistle in your memory Mr & Mrs Martin! 🏆
EDIT: I ended up here again, wading through this thick delicious nostalgia and whilst I am no monarchist, I noticed my old comment and hate myself for not posting my flag the first time, so... Here it is! Let's put the Great back in Britain (in a clipped voice) 😉🇬🇧
Hear, hear old chap!😉👍 Sadly Britain wasn't allowed to be great from about 1946 onwards (some would argue from 1919 onwards).
@@musoseven8218 Sold out from Cromwell's time. CURchill made it a fait accompli for his 30 pieces of silver.
Make Britain Great Again !
2:12 - "...mice on the line".
Terence Cuneo was there.😂😂😂
He had a lot to deal with at his railway. But his wife stood by his side. That generation really had it rough.
Thats one happy man and wife i hope they had many happy years play trains wish it was in my back garden .
Have you considered building your own model railway?
@@MrNoUsername Yes busy with a railway in my back garden GWR around 1940
This is what the modern kids are missing out today.
They got all that stuff on computer games now. What do you think Minecraft is all about. Buying the little metal stuff is quite expensive nowdays.
Legoboy95 yo im young but like this stuff.
Model Train Clubs: Am I a joke to you?
@@boristheamerican2938 they have more values than Minecraft. they require much more skills.
Model railroading is pretty expensive, and sometimes complicated.
Some kids will not understand how to get it all running. DCC decoders, mainteinance, switches, all the electric stuff, and all the materials needed to build a model railway, the wood to build the custom table probably needed, the tools, all the scenery building, layout design, buildings, weathering, etc.
I think small kids could start with Tomy/Trackmaster Thomas and Friends sets, wich are far more simple, but similar railway feeling.
They can do it virtually anyway, there is a Model Railway game called "Rule the Rail", were you can build your own railways, or even design the ones you want to use in real life.
I would love to build my own model railway, but i have to wait until i'm a grown man with money. That's the true.
Meanwhile, i will stick to my mobile devices
Happy to be one of the thousands of people enjoying watching this over 50 years later. Victor and his wife are really cool people.
Good man gotta love model railway enthusiasts
Passion... it's beautiful to see.
This is actually really impressive
This is really incredible
This is what true happiness looks like.
I wonder what happened to all this ??
Time Team will dig a trench in a 1970s rubbish pit and find it one day.
She got fed up and burnt it all
They were buried with their train set.
I read in the BBC UA-cam channel that after his wife passed he kept it running weekly until 1986.
I’d love to ont what happened to it all.
@@bugler75 It got broken up and all the items were sold off at auction because the children didn't want it or they were too busy playing trains to have any children and the state or a distant relative sold it all off. Most likely. Possibly an interested child of the couple moved in after his death and continued using the railway, eventually finding a wife who enjoyed enacting the 1948 timetable an they are still at it now.
Brilliant commitment.
Marvellous!
I wonder what happened to all this marvelous couples work.
It should have been either. Adopted by the National trust. Or relocated to the York railway museum.
Alas, i assume, it was destroyed.
Fantastic! Hope that layout is still operational.
Plunkerville R/R seconds that question. 2/19/24
Dude that model railway is cool
Bloody amazing! What a feat for the era.
I want to know where the rest of the film is ?????

Is that two-rail O gage? Who made these and is two-rail still run in Britain?
This might be 3rail, because of the balloon loop at the end, and he has a current collector rail off to the side.🤔 To answer your other question: There are some folks here who still run three-rail, and models are still available new to something closer the type of coarse-scale standards you would have found in the 1950s with tinplate rollingstock, such as Bassett Lowke (a Hornby Hobbies brand, last I knew), but they're very much the exception. The Finescale *and* three-rail combination like is popular in the USA has seemingly never been available here.😕
Finescale two-rail took over as the norm in O gauge from commercial, coarsescale three-rail some 50years back, albeit mostly kit/scratch built for 4.5 decades, *but* finescale O gauge (2rail) is a trully booming sector of the UK/British model railway market at the moment, with _lots_ of ready-to-run becoming available over the last 5years, with makers like Heljan and Dapol mostly leading the way, but there are plenty of other, much smaller companies with ready-to-run offerings too, and the number of kit suppliers for locos and rolling stock is still as strong as ever.
Only downside is our houses are somewhat smaller on average, and the suggested minimum track radius for even a small shunting/switching 0-4-0ST engine is 40inches... Whereas I'm sure I've seen US layouts running 3rail express trains through radii nearly half that? The result being most layouts folk have at home are either shunting puzzles, implausibly small rural backwater termini, or just depict a part of a depot for those really bent on running/displaying bigger locos. As ever though, there are exceptions, and some exceptional exceptions at that! Music producer Pete Waterman's depiction of the railways of his native Leamington Spa being a prime example.😮 Simon George's layout depicting Heaton Lodge Junction in the 1980s is another big layout, the UK's biggest in fact, modeling a scale 1.3 mile stretch of track.😬

What a waste of life when you could be out there doing something proper
Why do you consider it a waste?
@@MrNoUsername I thought it would be straightforward if you cannot work out what is a waste of time here, think you should be with them. No disrespect to you but come on.
What is a 'proper' thing to do in your opinion Mr Mullen?
@@amp9930 The proper thing in my humble opinion would be for them to go and see their local psychiatrist and I think you should also go with them. If you can’t work out what I’m trying to say it’s pretty standard in my humble opinion, Mr 99😂
@@petemullen842 what would you say if I said that going to a psychiatrist was a waste of time and money? The couple in the film look perfectly happy doing what they are doing.

They both seem to enjoy it very much. I don’t know what your talking about.
