    You make it look easy, but for those watching who have not done it before, I would like to stress, that stair making is the most unforgiving capentry. Your methodical aproach is excelent! The prep and design alone can take many hours. Thanks for posting Paul, this film will help many carpenters for years to come. Best wishes and God bless, Lucas

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  Рік тому

      Howdy Lucas- you are so correct on the stairs. It does take some planning and figuring. Like most projects I have to build it in my mind and then put it to work. Stairs are one of my favorite things to do. Like the wooden ship you are doing, it’s such a great pleasure to look back on what was accomplished and enjoy the satisfaction of following through. God’s blessings to you brother

    You are a smart man enjoy watching your video watched you build the cabin first I am a finish carpenter have been for 44. Years have done a lot of trime work and stair work ounce helped a friend of mine add 3 rooms on the back of a200 year old log house we restored the complete 2story 4 rooml housel .l built a stair case in it cutting 3 stringers from 5 by 12oak beams all open space with 1" oak treeds and trimmed the complete house and the house was the second oldest house in alamance county Burlington nc those were some of the best working days of my life look forward to seeing you in the future thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge see you soon.

    This explanation is very good in regards to the absolute most common error made, when building stairs. Calculating the material width of your finished treads into your rough framing is an absolute must. As well as considering the finish material at the top and bottom of the stair set. EVERYONE messes this up on their first or second try at building stairs. For someone just trying to learn how to build stairs, I would suggest watching this 2-3 times, just to let this critical point really soak in. Otherwise you won’t get it right, guaranteed and the fix is usually having to start over with new stringer material.
    I’ve always found it helpful to make several sketches first, detailing all of the dimensions that are going to go into your stair. You’d be surprised how helpful that can be.

    Excellent quality. That is a puzzle to figure out for sure. I really love how solid that is. I do hear you about the very top underneath, there really was not much bearing surface to attach to. Just a thought on the way the stair stringers are attached that would be simple, secure and doesn't take up any room: use a plywood gusset as a backer that your stringers face up to. The plywood gusset hangs strait down off the side of your floor beam, effectively extending it down so your stringers can mount to the face just like normal.

    This entire build has been amazing to me. I would think that a price really could not be put on the cabin. A bag of screws rather than a box of screws. I wonder if you will have a concealed storage space under the stairs. I will wait and see. Have good days!

      Howdy Buddy- this cabin is for a real close friend of mine who is helping me with my projects. You may have heard me speak of him as “Brother” Wayne. There will be a storage area underneath the stairs. Since it is a small cabin every bit of space needs to be utilized. Hope y’all had a great Christmas. God bless

    Hi Paul, Great Video. Do you think you'll ever do a video on how you electrified the cabin. I would be very interested in that. Thanks, Love your channel.

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  Рік тому

      Howdy Gary- the owner did the wiring in his cabin. When I work the logs out I drill holes in the them for the electrical. The holes are lined up from the bottom sill log up through the top plate log. It’s not that difficult to wire a log cabin if you prepare for it in advance. I still have the wiring to do in the cabin I started building on our property and I will show how it’s wired. Take care and God bless

    I'm in the process of designing my stairs to my timber frame log cabin ,,,,I'm wanting to use Osage orange discs rounds with live edge on them for my steps but I'm wanting to make the stairs more of ramps than steps for my dad n company that can't step up on stairs but walk up a ramp ,,,,it's a job in,process and design ,,,,,,but I'm only working withun a small area ,,,,but I get alot of great info from your videos and I will take your info and work it in with mine ,,,😁

      Howdy Dennis- stairs can be tricky but when you know how the basics work you can pretty much figure out what to do. Working in limited area makes it a bit more challenging but I’m sure you will make it happen. I’ve built handicap ramps before and they take a look of space. Our codes are 12” run per 1” of height. Merry Christmas and God’s blessings to y’all

    Hello, we have appreciated all your advice regarding options to fix and repair our family dove cabin. My latest problem of 3 rotten logs behind the chimney has clouded my bigger problem. How to repoint and repair the back side of the chimney. Any shoot like devices or suggestions would greatly help. As usual love your videos. Not that it matters but I am working alone after a hired handyman got me for $😩 . So now solo it is. Thanks again . Point looks amazing btw.

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  Рік тому +1

      Howdy y’all- getting behind the chimney without removing the logs will be a challenge. Could you remove the chinking and pump some kind of cement in there? Unfortunately, if the flashing on the chimney gives way there can be water get behind and cause damage. It might be possible to cut out the rotten pieces and replace them. Not being able to actually see it it’s a bit difficult to tell you exactly what to do. Hope you can get it fixed up. Sorry about your helper. Take care and let me know how it’s going. God bless y’all

    Wouldn't it have been better if you put the top steps against the wall? Was there a reason why you did not do that? Oh, was it because of the wood stove?

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  Рік тому

      Howdy Kernix- if the top stringers had been right against the wall it would’ve been difficult to get on them. They are attached to the upper platform which is against the wall so actually the weight of the stringers is against the wall. It would have taken up a lot more room. That’s the reason for doing a set of switch back stairs. God bless and Merry Christmas to you and yours

    So glad to find your channel again! Glad to see you doing so well! Hey I was wondering why your top length of stairs were not ran against the timber wall instead of floating out there. Is that to save floor space? I was just thinking that the timber wall would give you a bit more of stability for that section. But I can see it would waste more floor space. Your video is helping me figure out my house stairs. I have a walk down to my cellar that is giving way and falling. It is curious because it seems to rely upon a lot of tension to hold the whole run of stairs above it. It reminds me of the old Jesuit mine death traps. So I am doing more head scratching than diving into it headlong.

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  Рік тому +1

      Howdy Bonnie- the upper section of stairs is supported by the higher platform that is against the log wall so the log wall is actually pushing against the bottom of the upper stringers. The upper stringers are anchored on the bottom of the second floor joist, which is not my favorite thing to do, but I was short on distance between the joist and upper platform. I really needed another 7” to be able to put the stringers against the joist. Hope this explains your question. God bless and a very Merry Christmas to you and your kin
