Would LOVE to hear the story of that wonderful cowboy hat!!
Howdy Wesli- that hat is quite old, early seventies. I got it from a mens store that was going out of business about 35 years ago. It’s a Thoroughbrand 7x. Been my faithful companion for a long time. I’ve tried to find a new hat but I can’t find what I want. Thank you for watching the video. God bless

Howdy y’all- thank you so much. Your kindness is much appreciated. Take care and God bless
Really enjoyed the video.
I always learn something new.
Great scribing trick, indeed.
Great job on the starecase, but I have to tell you I am not fond of that style.
Years ago, I had a lawyers office on my route, and they kept their backstock up stares. Each triangular step was a different size, and I had to drag my dolly up, turning each corner and not knowing or seeing what size or angle of the step. It was a real workout indeed. 💪 😆
Thanks for sharing, and God bless.
Howdy Robert- thank you so much for the kind words. I can imagine how hard it would be trying to maneuver a dolly up and down a set of stairs like this. I was really cramped for room, so this is what I did. Hope y’all are doing well. Take care and God bless y’all

We had those switchback stairs in the old house we grew up in. I think the treds were only 7 inches instead of 8 because I fell down them quite a few times. Lol Very painful to land on. They beat you up pretty good. 🙂 Yours look way better.
Howdy Ray- I’m sure a tumble down them would be an unpleasant experience for sure. Not very many people around here build a switch back. Thank you for watching the video. God bless
I really like your scribing technique. I usually use my steel rule on its width which can get a little cumbersome and not quite as accurate as what you showed.
On another note, personally I wouldn't of used cedar for the treads due to how they will wear. Plus using a different species would add some nice contrast. None the less, the finished product looks great! Thanks for all of your tips and detail with all of your builds.
Howdy y’all- thank you for watching the video. Much appreciated. I really would have liked to use a different wood for the treads but I didn’t have anything that was seasoned and lumber yards aren’t stocking yellow pine. The stairs will have a gym finish of some kind. The friend I did this for has already made it plain that anyone coming in had to respect his cabin. Thank you for your comment. Take care and God bless

The Cedar you used for these stairs is absolutely beautiful. I don't think I could have put a finish nail in them. I wonder if there is a way to secure them from the back and bottom side? If there is, you would know. The chamfers you put on the post are exactly like the post on my front porch if that gives you an idea of the age of my house. I will give you the answer, it was built in 1925 and the post are really close to being 8x8 actual. Your scribing technique is really cool, and I hope you will not fix it like others fix things that are not broken. How long will the aroma of the cedar last?
Have good days!
Howdy Buddy- there was no other way to fasten them because I had no access to the lower steps. Also, the 2x4’s I used in the framing for the support that was needed were in the way. I really didn’t want to face nail them, but I had no choice. The scribing technique has worked really well for me. When I restored the Chism house I had around 140 scribes to do and that was the best way to do them. Thank you so much for watching the video and for the kind words. I sure appreciate it. Take care and God bless
Beautiful wood, pal. Our cedar is much more yellow. Did you mill those on your HM126?
Howdy y’all- this is red cedar that grows everywhere here in abundance. Yes, all the wood in the stairs was sawn on the 126. It’s quite a blessing to have. Hope all is well out there. Did you get my text message? God bless
I bet that red cedar makes the whole house smell so good, great work... What State are you in ?
Howdy Jim- yes, it does have a nice aroma to it. We’re in Arkansas in the Ouachita Mountains. Thank you so much for watching the video. God bless
You sir, have some skills.
Howdy Aaron- thank you so much for your kindness and for watching the video. God bless
I waited to watch pt 2 before asking this; Usually on a 180° switch back stair like this, almost always, the upper stair set will go against the wall and the lower set will start out from the wall, the width of the upper (opposite of this arrangement). That way you’re able to attach one upper stringer, solidly to the wall. You remarked that you weren’t thrilled about the upper attachment and that is understandable. Was there a reason you went with this configuration instead?
Howdy- if I had put the upper set of stringers against the wall they would have been covering a door way. I was really cramped for room. God bless
I like your work on the stairs except a couple of thing,s, needs hand rails on both sides going from landing to the loft, and needs rails on outside going from floor to the landing. Other than those two things, I love how you built the staircase.
Howdy y’all- I did the stairs like the owner requested. However, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to have the extra handrail. Thank you so much for watching the video and commenting. Take care and God’s blessings to you
I would usually join the corner boards and place them together then fill in the field
Howdy George- that would certainly work well. Thank you so much for watching the video. God bless
