    According to the Smithsonian, the first campers were homemade starting around 1901, and from the descriptions were essentially what we call tear drop campers or tent on trailer campers like we still use today, along with some Conestoga type wagons modified to be towed behind a car. The first commercial campers began rolling off assembly lines in 1910 and the first motorized RV, ironically made by Rolls Royce debuted the same year.

      Yes sir! Awesome information. If you have a chance to visit the National RV Hall of Fame in Elkhart, Indiana sometime, you can see all versions of what you're describing on display there. It is also thought that the very first ones were likely homemade. Obviously, we needed to prototype before mass production. Great feedback. Thanks for watching!

    I like tear drops because they are tiny homes that fit in my garage ready to go at a moments notice.
    Plus I no longer like sleeping on the ground.

    Watched the "Best custom tear drop trailer" video that you were featured in... I RARELY subscribe to channels.... I was so impressed I immediately subscribed upon watching that video. You have a gift my friend...OMG you have truly found your calling. I have a Super C, and was looking for something to tow behind for friends that just can't sleep with pet dander in the area (we have 2 dogs and a cat) ...so I figured I would look around at teardrops as a "Pet Free" bed option for guests outside of our living area. Wow... looking forward to watching more of your videos!!!

Turns out Cosmo has a Vistabule which has a similar approach to insulation as you and - here's the good part - he has a you tube video where he is camping in single digits with no real problems of condensation which was my main concern. Cool!

    • @OverlandTrailer
      @OverlandTrailer  4 роки тому +1

      Great question. Thanks for following. A mobile shower shelter is often a favorite addition, camping in campgrounds that have showers is also an option. We usually camp in the backcountry, so we'll usually find a lake to bathe in.

    How to you camp with the kids in a Tear Drop. I've alway wanted to build one for about 8 years but five years ago my son was born. Perhaps we might need to re-think this but I usually one see couples without kids in tear drops. I would love to hear how you do it with your kids.

    • @OverlandTrailer
      @OverlandTrailer  5 років тому

      There are many ways. Our first TD was 5' wide 4' tall and 10' long. I made it that long so we could have a bunk bed at the front of the trailer for our kids when they were little. Over the past 12 years, we've had several customers who wanted a bunk in our production 8' model. I designed a hidden bunk that slides out from the cabinet in the cabin area that holds one child. My business partner, now that his kids are larger, uses a rooftop tent on the tow vehicle or the teardrop. Of course, a side tent or SUV tent attached to the side also works. A rooftop tent and a teardrop can sleep 4 adults no problem.

  • @lawrenceporter3723
    @lawrenceporter3723 3 роки тому

    Do you need trailer brakes ? and is it that muc of an improvement over a tent that its worthwhile if you only use it 3-4 times a year ?

    • @OverlandTrailer
      @OverlandTrailer  3 роки тому

      Hi Lawrence! Trailer brakes are not required for trailers under 2k lbs in the US and Canada. Most teardrop trailers come in under 1,000 lbs.
      As far as an improvement over a tent, it is a big improvement in comfort, teardown and setup tasks and more. You'd probably need to decide if it's something you'd want. I always advise people rent one on RVShare or Outdoorsy before purchasing. Cheers! - Mark

      Ford was annoyed at the amount of wood scrap that he had to pay to dispose of. He tasked his engineers to come up with a solution. They ground the wood up, carbonized it and compressed it into briquettes. He would give buyers of his car a bag of briquettes and encouraged them to take their car into woods and camp.
      Kingsford was Ford's brother in law.
