Just discovered your channel and I'm amazed. Your attitude to ceramics is absolutely fantastic. Many of the forums and other pros out there are very pretentious, yet your goal of lowering the entry bar is refreshing and admirable. I have been getting into design in general, especially art deco & midcentury design which are polar opposites, one being over the top in detail and the other being brutally minimalist. This video you made demonstrated a different kind of beauty in minimalism that was simple, imperfect and with personality that you could only get out of creating the shape in this process. Great work
I think you might have just solved a puzzle for me. I wanted to buy some ollas to water my garden, but they cost $40-$70 each. I wanted to start with 10, but the cost for that many was prohibitive. Then I saw how I could make them using 2 terra cotta pots glued together. But I didnt like the idea of the glue in contact with the water that my veggie plants would be using. But I was about to try that anyway, at a cost of $10-$15 each. Then I remembered my pottery class in college and thought of just throwing them; until saw the cost of a decent potters wheel. Ouch! Okay, I was good at coils, even won first place for a southwestern coil pot I made. But it would take a couple hours, at least, per olla. Finally, I was scrolling videos and saw a slab curvy mug that you made. Now thats an idea! So I searched your channel and saw this video and this should work. I would need to double the size. So, do you think this design would work for an olla? It wont be glazed, and would be buried underground. I can get the terra cotta clay for $30 for 50lbs. What do you think? Would the slab vase be as strong as coils?
I dont see why not! You’ll need to be careful about how thick & wet your slabs are. They should be dry enough to support themselves, but wet enough to bend. You’ll probably need to use formers so they can dry in the right shape. Anything is possible 😄

thank you! you can do it! let me know if you need any tips 😉
awesome
Can you make a large vase with this process? Maybe 18” tall? Someone told me that you can’t make anything over about 10” with slabs. Is that true?
