Rest in Peace Cormac. I still think about these two books five months later.

I think The Passenger is a freaking beautiful book. It really hit me straight in the heart and gives a whole lot to chew on. It’s a book that can be reread for years.

I am in total agreement! It’s an amazing book that has stayed with me. I read the duology 2x last year. January and July. - MJ

These are two great pieces of work. McCarthy to my mind is the greatest living American author. I can definitely understand your criticisms with his style of writing; it is an acquired taste. Stella Maris in particular struck a real chord with me. A really sad coda but still brilliant. And if it is the final book to be released by him then it is a really great way to end his writing career. Lot's of great conversations in The Passenger also. This a great discussion of his work. Great video. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thank you so much for sharing and the great feedback. I think having listened to the audiobooks gave me a groundwork to tackle the physical books in the future. It’s not that I don’t like his writing style, I know I would get frustrated with it and put down the book down. 😄 Going into it a second time, knowing what I know, may make the experience more enjoyable for me. I hope it’s not his last work.

String Theory is not really a theory because it is unfalsifiable, and it makes no testable predictions.
It is useful in other ways, but I think theorists are attached to it for being a poetic, beautiful theory.
How unique vibrations made by different violin strings elicit captivating notes and, together, lovely music, who doesn't love that!

Great reviews. Thanks. I’m Australian. McCarthy HAS to be heard in an American voice - so I always listen to his audiobooks.

I didn’t have any desire to read these until now. But now I really want to.
I watched St Elsewhere a bit and now I want to know how it ended!
Also, I think we should start referring to him as Mac Mac

Wait what?!?! You don’t know the ending to St. Elsewhere? I’ll tell you if you like. It’s messed up! A ton of people were angry, I personally loved it! Mac squared? Max to the second power? I’m down. 😄

The books really twist your brain. I’m not sure how the physical book would be, but the audiobook was complete enjoyable, digestible, and still messed up. 😂

I feel like McCarthy himself is a bit daunting. I've never been an audiobook reader (though I have tried numerous times) and my only attempt was Blood Meridian. I didn't finish it, but now it's a couple years later and my expectations are different and I'm will to give another try.
Passenger and Stella Maris are both books I'm intrigued by, and I do plan to get them sometime.
This review was encouraging! I'm glad you enjoyed them

I am telling you, these audiobooks are so well done! I would not steer your wrong. I guarantee that if I read the physical book I would be lost and would have DNF'ed it out of frustration. 😂

The danger of listening versus reading is that it is a passive activity and therefore it allows your brain to wander more so than you would by reading it, an active activity.
These books are very readable. The subject matter is daunting, but the prose isn't as daunting as in some of his other works.

@@t0dd000 i disagree. I found myself for these two books in a much different atmosphere than other audiobooks. I would describe it as a reverent attention to the prose and story. I cannot express how well done the audiobooks were produced. Highly recommended for a different story experience. 😊 - MJ

@@M-J yep, it definitely depends on the individual. Someone like myself is prone to mind-wandering, and that's my own issue with audio. But my cousin is audio ONLY, and he tends to miss his turns while driving because he's so immersed in a story...

His aversion to n't is the only quirk of his that annoys me. ;)
His writing style forces you to focus on the story, and that is kind of brilliant, even if only a side effect.
I find these books incredibly readable and just ... outstanding. I wanted to start over again after I finished. And the stories are sitting on my brain now weeks later.
Anyway. Blood Meridian is still my favorite of his. The Border Trilogy contends for that spot as well. But these two are in their own category and might hold second place in the ranking of his novels.
And ... something has to be said for the sheer amount of research and thinking it took to produce these. Unbelievable.
Also. I found the sibling relationship rather beautiful. And only Cormac could pull that off. Two otherworldly people who only had one other match in the world. Beautiful, yet tragic.

I like some of McCarthy's books, especially 'The Road' and 'Blood Meridian'.
However, I do not find these two new books to be of the same caliber. McCarthy writes in such a heavy-handed style, with symbolism that borders on the painful. He seems desperate to show off [especially in 'Stella Maris'] with gimmicks and theories that do not make the books more interesting or profound. And honestly, for all the talk of the heavy philosophy he brings to this book, I can't find anything in that area that is particularly new, or insights that haven't been expressed already, and more beautifully by others.
McCarthy seems determined to inflict vague philosophical discussions on us via the steady streams of other-wise meaningless characters in the book. These discussions are pitched at about the level which you would find with a group of grad students under a shade tree while sharing a bottle of wine. His writing is like a rock band playing a great song, that gets caught up in these long, eternity-defying and ultimately uninteresting instrumental solos, till you find yourself asking "Dang, what happened to the song they were playing?"

This is just my opinion, but I feel his thoughts and musings about the end of life (he is 89) shows greatly in these works. Which may be why it is different from his previous works. I did enjoy this pairing and hope to read them again in the future. 😊
