As a long time motor racing fan (I saw my first race at Laguna Seca in 1968) where the Ricciardo Fastest Lap is concerned, in my opinion, If the car is still running and has all four wheels, it is pretty much 'open season' on getting the fastest lap.

As an Alonso fan watching Brasil 2012, it was really annoying to see Vettel getting a free pass from the Toro Rosso's as he came back through the field after the tangle with Senna on the first lap - openly instructed on the radio from TR if I remember rightly. Schumacher also chose to wave him through as a token on his final race (which was of course his own choice) but it wasn't great fun to see him get 3 places back for free. May not have made the difference, but took the shine off the finale for sure.

If this Ricciardo fastest lap is a real problem then I have a suggestion: Do what they do in Formula E. If the driver with the fastest lap finishes outside the top 10 the fastest lap point goes to the driver with the fastest lap in the top 10 finishers
This way no driver can lose a point for something like this if this is deemed as an issue.

    • @spikyone79
      @spikyone79 4 місяці тому +11

The issue wasn't a driver outside of the top 10, there would have been no discussion if Perez had been running around in 15th and took the fastest lap. The issue is that it looks like the two Red Bull teams colluding. Whether that's true or not, it's always been problematic that Red Bull effectively have four cars to everyone else's two.

    • @ArakkAttack

Way to miss the point. It's not about this specific issue, it's about the following: does red bull have the potential to wield influence over the actions of the VCARB team and drivers, and if so, is that desirable to allow in the sport?

Definitely should be the first ten places allowed to take the extra point. Back markers shouldn’t be allowed to
block the point. It was a calculated decision by Horner to do that, sacrificing a drivers race to stop someone
else getting the point. You can’t score a point outside top ten so there was nothing to gain by the fastest lap
so it’s obvious why he was told to do it. Yes it’s in the rules but championships can be won and lost by one
point do the rules are wrong and favour big teams with money and power. Teams like Williams can’t use that
to gain advantage so the rule in unfair and biased towards the top four, as usual.

First sensible conversation on Ricciardo, right here. Danny has had lots of chances, and there will be millions of column inches written about his career in the next few years. The hits and big misses. If Danny can pull out a fastest lap WTF in terms of the race. That is the big deal. Not whether he did it. We do not need another fastest-lap rule. I always remember Alan Jones the last Australian F1 World Champion. He was testing his Williams and came in from a few laps and said to his race engineer and Frank Williams once he stopped and while still sitting in the car words to the effect "it is driving well but the ride is quite bumpy" and Frank said without missing a beat "I suggest you sit on your wallet, Alan". Danny's wallet should provide a comfortable solution. Not the only reason one is in the sport and not a bad consolation prize. And this sport has produced incredible ups and downs for a wide variety of participants. Arguably a man confined to a wheelchair thought another mans observation of a bumpy ride not high on the priority list. Jones went on to be Williams first World Champion. The highs and lows are F1 and you get on with it. Love the channel and the commentary Marc.

Did Lando make a mistake giving Max clear air? Would the better play be to back him up a little, kill his tyres, let the others get close and give Oscar a chance to get past too. If Max pitted he'd be in the pack and Lando could use his pace to go long, maintain a gap and have fresher tyres at the end.
In terms of teams helping each other, I think Mercedes should swap to a "if not us then not Redbull" mindset and do what they can for their engine customer.

No matter how much I like Ricciardo, since he left Red Bull, he hasn't shown anything close to what he did at Red Bull. Beating Vettel, being the closest to Max as every teammate has been was followed up by appalling stints at Renault and McLaren. Red Bull literally saved his career by taking him back and only half a year later give him a race seat but sadly he never came close to his previous form. F1 is a harsh business and if you don't perform as expected, there's no place for you, no matter how big your smile or your marketing value is. What nobody can take away from him though is his status as a legend among F1 fans and he should be proud of that and what he achieved in F1. He will be missed.

The difference between McLaren finding a loophole in the regs, Red Bull having done so earlier in the season, allegedly, is that I'm sure there is to be a rule that the fastest lap point had to come from a scoring driver, presumably because points are important to teams lower down the grid. I know this could be abused, and I think was by Max he was trying to win his first title by pitting from second with a 25+ second gap to the 3rd place driver and taking this crucial point, but on the whole it didn't happen, or at least not very often,, and someone at the back of the grid couldn't do this, so I don't see this as innovative at all, it has been done before.
Hopefully it won't matter when all is said done at the end of the season, and hopefully was just a farewell gift to Danny for all his hard work over the years, but it still leaves a sour taste in the mouth. I don't think the sister team argument makes much difference, an engine supplier team could potentially do the same and you can look at this in this light I don't think this is the case here, there's still a way to go in the Championship.

What is very infrequently spoken about, are the internal politics and machinations within Red Bull itself, and how that affects their driver decisions. Is Checo still in because of performance?
Performance is one aspect, the other is money, sponsorship and the current power struggle within Red Bull.
If Lawson IS coming in for the next six races, is that to prepare him for a VCARB seat next year, or is it to prepare him to take Checo's seat?
Red Bull are still aware of putting an under prepared, young fast driver in the big seat. Daniel would still be a better option to replace Checo than Liam Lawson, who still needs time to get used to F1 cars and system.
But, Checo brings a LOT of money. He costs them a LOT too, with damage and performance so Red Bull have lost the constructors championship.
So then, it becomes about the internal politics. Christian loves Daniel, but does he have the power to keep him? Does Helmut and Jos Verstappen have the power to thwart Christian and get in a rookie, even if it will cost them with damage and pressure?
