I like this educational style of video that shows the different varieties in detail. If you have an interest in filming more like this, winter squash varieties could be a good topic. I haven't had the opportunity to try yams, but I get 4 or 5 varieties of sweet potatoes from my favorite farmers market.
That's a great idea! I love squash, summer or winter varieties.
As a Nigerian, lemme say,in this part of the world, that mistake (potatoes misnamed as yams) doesn't happen.I'm stoked that you've tried and like egusi(and pronounce the word properly too😊).Foofoo does not refer to pounded yam only,in fact,we generally refer to it as that:pounded yam.We call cooked pounded cassava foofoo, along with other cooked pounded starchy foods,(though these days, people have annoyingly and incorrectly started calling them "swallows",a translation of the various local expressions for them)and eat them with what we call soups--egusi is one of them--which are NOTHING like what the western world calls soup of course.Plus,we don't salt yam after it's cooked and don't eat it by itself, that's kinda bland:there would be a (usually herby and spicy)sauce to go with it separately(sort of like a dip) or which it'd be cooked in(yam porridge).Your li'l girl was right to refuse it as is 😅.
Thank you so much for the additional info!! Haha yeah, I wouldn't eat it plain either. Just for the experiment!
iI have been trying to tell people for years that sweet potatoes and yams aren't the same. Thank you for educating the people.
Haha, some people really don’t want to hear it. Share this video 😉
In the islands we eat lots of yams. We have them soups and stews. We also cook it by itself and eat with any meat or fish that has lots gravy, it’s a filling meal
Yum!! I bet it is nice and filling. I want to try some recipes
I put my Yams in the oven and let it cook. My favorite way of eating them is by cutting them into fries form and eat it with vegan eggs for breakfast and it's soooo good. I also paired them with a good burger or chicken.
Grew up eating okinawan sweet potato’s and they will always be my number 1. Nothing better to me. Love that you talk about them here! I can’t wait to watch more of your content.
I’m from SoCal, (I know you were here for a while) and sweet potatoes are called sweet potatoes. Certain stores will label them sweet potatoes/yams. But for the most part we call em sweet potatoes. And some folks call em candied yams after they’ve cooked the sweet potatoes😁 But thanks for this great informative video🤗
My parents when I was kid could call me "sweet potato" and at thanksgiving and christmas family gatherings my aunt would make her sweet potato pies and "yams" i loved so much. I have such an affinity for the food and gravitated to your channel name naturally haha. Thank you for educating us on the difference, i had no idea any of this. Very eye opening
In Suriname yams are called napi. We have the white and the purple one. Great in soup and a good substitutie for rice
Thanks for the informative video. Baby J has gotten so big. Where did the time go? She's such a little lady now.
Wow, thanks for clearing that up. That was so informative. I've been so confused about this for years.😅
Happy to help! Thanks for watching!!
That was a very interesting history lesson
In the UK , we only mainly have the orange sweet potatoes. Some asian stores have the white ones. I have seen yams too actually, but did not know they are until now. I will e purchasing them to try. Thanks.
The morning glory family is from the convolvulus species which is under the order of solanales which are from the Americas.
I realize I've never had yams! Would love to try them ! I LOVE Korean sweet potatoes 💚💙💚💙💛🧡💯🥰😍
As a Haitian American who grew up with both (and they all have different creole names) growing up it was so confusing because most other Americans didn’t know what to call them and I didn’t know what to call real yams in English without having someone think I was talking about sweet potatoes 😂 On top of that we’d often shop in Spanish-speaking grocery stores which had other names which varied depending on which Caribbean country the shore was catering to 😂😂😂 what a nomenclative disaster! LOL
Now we need a video on yucca and cassava!😂
Haha, so confusing!!
Salivating at the image of the Dekalb Farmers Market 🤤 man I miss that place!
Thank you SO much for clarifying this. I am Nigerian and grew up eating yams, I loved fried yams with fried plantains topped with fried egg and tomato stew (Americans would call it sauce). I also liked yam porridge. And one of my favorite memories was when my grandmother visited and would only pound yam for me and her, while everyone just ate regular garri (fried and dried cassava made into a paste) with the soup. I didn’t like Egusi soup though, I liked okro soup, orah soup and vegetable soup. We also ate sweet potato, which we called sweet potato. When I moved here and saw yams that looked like sweet potatoes, I thought there was a whole nother tuber in the US called yams. So in my mind there were American “yams,” Nigerian yams and also sweet potato. 😅 I was today years old when I learned from your video that American “yams” are just sweet potatoes! 😅😂
The best explanation ever! Thank you!
Thank you for clarifying this!!!!!!!!
Thank you for this!!!
Great information, glad you are making videos again. Enjoy watching. 🍠

Sounds so yummy!
¡Thank you for clearing this up! I think I've only had the garnet and Japanese ones. I need to seek out those other kinds of yams, er, I mean sweet potatoes. Really clear explanations. Oh, and props to you for keeping your daughter's naysaying in the video.
Love that she can be included while her privacy is still kept safe
Her voice deserves to be heard, too :) Plus, she's getting so big and has all her own opinions now!
I really need to get your book!!!
I agree 😉
Thank you for sharing. ❤
Lots of good info here!
This video was very informative and interesting.
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching ☺️
Excellent video! Yum
Right around the 6 minute mark, you talk about Japanese sweet potato.. is that the one that kind of tastes like chestnuts? Not water chestnuts, roasted, what you find on the streets of New York City.
I was looking forward to this video, it's great... and now want to find the different varieties, or maybe I'll just try to grow them! 😁
I hope your daughter changes her mind about yams! Kids are funny about food. 😆
Yes, a delightful chestnut flavor. They sell them in the streets throughout Tokyo!
Have fun finding these varieties of sweet potatoes and yams 🍠

Well I definitely learned something new.
Janae u are so cute and funny lol...I loved this video. Very informative ❤And Baby J is so smart. She said you could eat the yams after eating candy to make your mouth go back to normal. That baby is smart❤❤❤
I didn't know there were so many varieties of sweet potato! I want to try the purple ones.
Sweet potato’s being all over African for centuries. In my country we eat the leaves too. They are very healthy. 🫶🏾🙏🏾

Thanks a lot! I really need to check if we in Germany have yams. Never heard of it before. Thank you. Lovely greetings from Germany 🥰🥰🇩🇪
Thanks for clearing that up. I’ve always called sweet potatoes yams.😊
When I buy organic sweet potatoes, sometimes I can only find the white so I eat those all the time.
My favorite way to eat sweet potatoes is to make chocolate pudding with them! Best ever and so healthy. 🍠🍠 🍠
❤😊❤THANK YOU
I only like Sweet Potatoes. Never Yam, because yams are wayyyyy too Mushy. 😝
Sweet Potatoes 👍🏼 In any color. Best are the Purple Potatoes, called Okinawan, very Nutritious!
Plain color ones I love them too. Japanese name is Okinawa Potatoes 😋👍🏼👏🏼
Yam fries are wonderful.
I bet!! I definitely want to try. Like yucca fries, right?
My beagle daughter loves sweet potatoes , plain of course.
We eat yams alone boiled with any protein and gravy and put it soups and stews. 🇩🇴
I’m from SETX & I have Louisiana fam .
I found this quite interesting.
Please add some cooking with sweet potato videos
Check out my channel and blog! I have MANY sweet potato recipes! It's even in the name of my whole brand :)
WOW! That was very informative & I’m glad that you gave us this masterclass on sweet potatoes! I just didn’t know! My mom was from Mississippi, & “yams” were her thing! Can you list the website to order the Okinawa sweet potatoes? I love that purple color & can only imagine the nutrient content. I live in Ohio & we have limited supply of colored sweet potatoes. Thanks!
I buy all my sweet potatoes locally!
Great video
Thank you for this very informative and interesting video! I find it very credible, and am a bit disappointed in myself for living in a false reality for more than 60 years. The only kind of sweet potato I ever saw until I moved out of my parent's house was canned "yams" which are quite horrible now that I look back on them. My wife and I eat baked FRESH sweet potatoes frequently. We will stop calling any of the yams.
BTW, genuine yams imported from Ghana or other African nations are quite expensive. They're available on Amazon.
What’s the deal with rue purple sweet potatoes, besides the higher price?
Sweet potatoes🍠🍠🍠🍠 are so beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
Isn't that a Yuca or cassava? Or is that different
This is different. Looks like yucca kinda, right? The skin on yams is rougher
Greetings! Can you please provide the name and location of the International Market you showed and mentioned in this video? I thank you in advance
It's the Dekalb Farmers Market in Atlanta :) I love shopping there!!
What are yucca and taro then as opposed to yams?
They're also root vegetables but in different families than yams.
In Sudan we call sweet potatoes “Bambae” I wonder where that name came from
Cool name!!
Is your next cookbook going to be on soul food? I hope so. 🙏❤
It’s everyday recipes inspired by traditional southern food and global influences 😊
@@SweetPotatoSoul I'm so excited I can't wait
Thanks for sharing S.P.S.
❤❤
Yams look like cassava to me!
My mom told me that the difference between yams and sweet potatoes is that yams don't have strings and sweet potatoes do.
Interesting 🤔🤔
Honest mistake. Yams sweet potatoes ha ha
The yam look like a sweet potato. The tan look like a hairy Irish potato if you ask me. I’m still going to call a yam a yam. That’s my culture. You must not be American.
