  • Today I'm planting cool flowers also known as hardy annuals. I learned about this awesome group of flowers from the book "Cool Flowers" available here - www.amazon.com/dp/0989268810?...
Cool flowers thrive in cooler temperatures and can be planting in late fall, late winter, or very early spring. Today I'm doing a very early spring planting of delphinium, foxglove, yarrow, scabiosa, snapdragons, sweet peas, starflower, and orlaya. I'll also show you some fall planted larkspur, nigella, dara, yarrow, foxglove, and sweet william. Then we can go down to the basement to see my presprouted ranunculus and get them in the ground in a caterpillar tunnel.

Just watched your video again. And it gave me courage for year two planting out in very early spring. Thank you for all of the helpful info. Fall planted for the first time. most things did well. The ones that haven't, I think were because I planted them too late and they didn't have time to really get established. Live and learn.

So thankful for your recommendation of Cool Flowers! It has been such an exciting addition to my gardening plan for this upcoming season. I would love to see a video of when you re-locate the direct sown hardy annuals in your landscape. I am super curious to hear your thoughts on which to move and why. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and beautiful garden with us!

This was so helpful! I have have been so confused about when to plant out half-hardy flowers, like my snaps. Half hardy implies you don't have to wait until last frost, but many of my half hardy seed packets say to plant out after danger of frost has passed. You're giving me faith to try planting out soon. I'm zone 6b as well and we're already having a very nice spring.

But the ones started in the spring, I’ve been afraid to put out side. They are my little babies! I am in the same zone as you (6b) in New Jersey, and you’ve given me such confidence to set my hearty annual seedlings 🌱 outdoors. I am going to take the leap!! Thanks for giving me the confidence.

I bought the book the last time you recommended it and I found it so inspiring but I have been totally confused how big these plants should be when I actually move them to the garden. Cool Flowers is a great book!
I'm looking forward to how colorful your garden is going to be! It's amazing how all the cool season flowers grow in Winter conditions isn't it!
    Amazes me every time!!
Down here in Texas the Bluebonnets are one of the wild cool season flowers. They start growing in late October, early November, and normally are starting to bloom right now! I call them "My Birthday Presents" bcuz they are always blooming on my day!!
But that big Arctic Freeze we had has really set them back!
I could only find about 20% of them still growing...
I'm not sure they are going to have time to bloom this year.
And with no rain to speak of since the snow was here, all the plants are still so tiny!!
The survivors look like to be the same size as they did back in early November!
They don't look anywhere near like they will bloom this year...
Could this be the year the crazy weather wipes out all the wild Bluebonnets in Texas?!!!
    Is that even possible?!!!!!!
Is it the Wild Flower Apocalypse??????
(perhaps I'm just being too dramatic?!!)
Do y'all think Mother Nature has a plan to save the wild ones?

Happy Birthday to your daughter. I just started this yr getting serious about sowing, thought I'd start with perennials for early planting. First yr sowing Ranunculus, bought at Floret, I planted those in a oval container that I wanted to display them in, put it out under a south side second floor porch that's protected with lattice and they all came up and I had to remove some. I was blown away by the roots, they're insane. Thanks for sharing the book again too.

I can't wait to try my hand at fall planting & overwintering this year! I was SOOOO prepared for my first cutting garden, but I made the mistake of planting my "plant 10-12 weeks before last frost" things in 128 cell's to try to save on space, and everything needed potted up the week I needed to do my "plant 8-10 weeks before last frost" & I just don't have the time in a week to pot things up AND plant seeds! 😆 But I had a really productive week this week and I got caught up.! I didn't get to start some things when I wanted to, but I have them started (& not too much later than planned), & ill have blooms before long, so I guess that's all that matters! I started my ranunculus too early- it's already blooming & I don't even have them in the ground! Lol! What temps do you wait for, for you to plant your ranunculus out? Also, where do you get your ranunculus?

Thank you for this! I saw your video in the fall, I have 150 little baby plants going into the garden. I keep thinking this is nuts but then I flashback to your videos and I’m going for it. Also, when I pinched my snaps I tucked the tops into soil and they are growing as well. Can’t wait to see your garden in the warmer weather. Btw, I’m over in New Jersey and feel more confident growing things very similar to you.

My “Cool Flowers” book arrived today! What a valuable resource! Thank you so much for recommending it. I am also in Zone 6B and anxious to give it a try. I can’t read it fast enough. 🌱💚

I’m so interested in the idea of cool flowers and fall/winter sowing. I bought Lisa Mason Ziegler’s book after watching one of your videos, and I’m almost finished with it. It is chock full of information! Obviously, I’ll have to do my fall sowing this coming fall, but in the meantime, I’m going to try some milk jug sowing. Thank you for always sharing what works for you and offering useful advice. I just love your channel.

I would suggest opening the garage door enough to do the work standing up. I use a bleach &. Water . The growth is inhibited for at least the season.

Thank you so much for this! I have so much to learn about growing flowers, I wish you could do more step-by-step videos. But I understand you have time limitations. I will get Lisa Mason Ziegler’s book.

Thank for sharing your knowledge and experience! I am a home gardener in zone 5b (Denver) and I just discovered Lisa Mason Ziegler and I am amazed that this is the time to put out hardy annuaLs in your zone… I see that I am too late for this year but I will be prepared for next year!

Hi, Nicole! I would appreciate seeing how you construct your sweet pea teepees. I am growing sweet peas for the first time. As always, thank you so much for sharing your garden and knowledge. I look forward to your videos!

So much great information! Nothing boring on your videos. It looks like a very light covering for your ranunculus. What is it for? I've had mine out in zone 6b under plastic and agribon since 2/6 in a tiny low tunnel over a raised bed. How long do you keep that covering over them? Thank you for all the sharing and please keep it coming. Love to watch them!!!
