@@greyklopstock7155i dont know..i could easily tell that 2 is SGT DI in both mix and solo play...its more realistic...the other one is a more generic tube overdrive
@@greyklopstock7155and that 'nuanced and balanced' what the guy in the video talks about is what makes it NOT realistic...every other tube drive emulator pretty much has that same tidy sound...real old amps cranked had much less 'lovely' sound to them...and sgt delivered in that regard...i can see why he prefers the first one...but yeah
I have to go with #2, because I prefer the cleaner articulation of notes. I think that it would cut through better in a mix. Both are good, but do slightly different things. To be honest, a blend of both of them would be perfect.
I feel that. I preferred the tone control and clarity of #2 at times. Seems like the EQ is really nice, and great to have if your amp doesn’t have a lot of tone control, especially. It does not break up like #1, though. The overdrive on number one sounds way better. There’s some really nasty, unmusical distortion when you push #2 with a hot input. I mean, not terrible, but very different from the first pedal. But that doesn’t matter to some players.
My test result was spot on and I must say it also motivated me to buy the BassRig pedal. So glad I have it. I own a 15 year old 300W Ampeg SVT CL (still USA build) & Ampeg 410 cab which is amazing but when going "ampless" this pedal really does a fantastic job.
Awesome Video. Really Confirmed my thoughts on the B15 tone from the SGT-DI pedal. Video idea: Can you do a comparison of the Bassrig 64 / Bassrig Super Vintage / SGT-DI SVT / SGT-DI B15 - same riff - just leveling with weaving in between with music and just bass like this video? I think these would get some use and be a fun way to acquire folks to your channel. But keep it going as you add more and more stuff in the preamp category of things.
My votes were: Round 1: slight margin to 2 Round 2: definitely 1 Round 3: definitely 2 Go figure :) Thanks for the comparison and blind tests. Very useful!
This was great! Blind test is such a good approach. I preferred #1. They were pretty even for me when clean, but #1 sounded waaaayyy better to me when drive was kicking in.
I'd take #1 for old-school vibes, but #2 for more modern sounds. Better is situational here, both sounded fine in an appropriate context (you're backing tracks were more old-school vibe, so #1 wins on that basis, but I'd probably want the brightness of #2 in other situations).
Thanks for the battle, I‘ve been waiting for, Philip! From just listening, as you said, both sound different but really good, but where #1 really stood out, was the edge of break up and driven sound, way more natural and warm and pleasing sounding, than #2. For the SVT thing the Origin is the clear winner for me… The B15 on the Ampeg sounds really awesome though… 💫 Cheers from Hamburg👋🏼😀
Great video. I was sold on the SGT-DI until I listened to this comparison. But to my ears, the BassRig just sounds better. As you said, it's just that bit more full, and less artificial. It's a shame, because I love the features of the SGT-DI. But in the end, it's the sound that matters.
Also probs, youre the man! I really enjoy your stuff and your honest and chilled out way of talking about bass! Such great Videos! The world of bass needs to see your channel!
Yes, I also use the Tech21 VT Bass (in my case in the Bass Fly Rig 1) at the moment. I never played the Origin so far, but guess this could be the first pedal that would be a real competitor to the VT Bass and maybe make me replace my Tech21 gear that I use for so many years. The Origin Pedals sound so much more amp like compared to all the other stuff out there.
Thanks so much for this comparison, which I wished for. With the third "aggressive" sound, it was absolutely clear what Origin and what Ampeg is. The Origin pedals just sound so much like "real" amps, while the Ampeg's distorted sound (scrambler) is simply mixed into it. The black Origin (Fender type) is certainly a competitor for a B-15-like sound. And I'm sure that the Origin would probably win there too.
2 is better to me, much more interesting mid content that would poke through better in a mix. Although I wonder if the two examples could have been EQ'd to sound more similar.
1 seems so much more mellow. 2 has a lot of character, and to me, seems to do a better job of simulating an actual amp. Not to say 1 is bad, and perhaps it just needs to be dialed in differently to achieve a similar effect. Love the blind comparison videos!
I also think it was super obvious which was which. The cab sim in the BassRig gives it away I think. The Ampeg pedal sounded very much like a DI signal (which can be cool). Preferred the BassRig on all tracks. Nice basslines!
Hey! Love everything about the channel. Have you used the Bassrig’s “amp out” into an actual amp? If so? How’d it sound? And how’s it work exactly? I’m sure the cab sim isn’t sent out but Is it only the amp out eq section that is sent out?
GREAT question. Yes I have! I plugged the amp out into the a V4B tube amp and it sounded scary good bypassing the amp’s tone stack. A bold claim because I love the V4. However, my understanding is the cab sim is always on with the Bassrig; that’s maybe my one critique of the pedal. But it didn’t bother me through another cab 🤷♂️ Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
@@philipconradmusic That’s so good to hear! Thanks for the response, Philip! I have an old Mesa walkabout in a 112 combo and MAN.. I love that tube amp. My thought process is to have the bassrig at the end of my chain on the pedalboard, allowing me to either run into my tube amp or DI straight to the front of house with the Bassrig. So your answer definitely helps! I’m a lot more comfortable giving it a try. Hahaha
I really like this format. I know your channel isn't mainly a gear demo channel, but I'd like to see a shootout in this format with Aguilar Tonehammer and other popular preamp DIs
Hi Phil, great review !! On the Origin did you use the DI or the Amp out? Does the SV have the same major frequencies roll-off that the 64 Black panel has? I had the Black panel for a couple of days...it sounded great through the Amp out but the DI is unusable in my opinion :(
I *much* preferred #2. Was surprised to see it was the Ampeg. It was way more articulate and had better mids (while still retaining warmth) so would work better in a live scenario.
This was interesting! I agree with your points, and after having played with the SGT-DI for a few days, it does do clean and clean-ish sounds really well! That said, it didn't do the trick for me, so I'm gonna sell that one and the hunt goes on. :) If only Origin could make a B15-voiced one that nailed the driven B15-sounds as well as the Super Vintage nails the SVT sounds!
Bought the bass rig super vintage to replace my dsm humboldt simplifier. Returned it after a few days. Kept the dsm. If you have the chance definitely try that one. Great channel btw.
Great comparison! If I were to get one for slapping to achieve a similar tone to the track Domino Line -Casiopea (killer bass solo) any advice on what might be a better fit?
First groove, they sound the same and I would be happy to have either. Second groove, I liked #2 better as it had a little more focus and grit. Third groove, didn't like either sound and wouldn't use that setting. So I guess my favorite is #2, whichever one that is.
I like that you talked about the feel and not just the sound. I can make most sounds work but I think the feel under the fingers is at least as important.
Absolutely agree - I can get almost any sound with the Helix Stomp, but the feeling when playing is not right. That's why I use completely different stuff - all analog - live.
The B15 and added features sell me on the SGT. The OE is a one trick pony though a very good one. But not for what you get for the money compared to the SGT. I already have an SVT Classic and I have the advantage of picking my own back line rigs on tour so can get the original SVT if I want it. The B15 is a bit harder to find on the road so nice to have such a perfect replica in the pedal.
I totally agree with your summation. I bought the SGT for the B15 sound and was just hoping for a good SVT as a bonus. It does a pretty good job, but the Origin SV sounds fatter and punchier. It does the aggressive tones way better. So here's my question, can you tone match the SGT to the SV or vice versa? I'd like to know if they're capable of producing the same sounds and how much compensation is needed on the tone control. Maybe even another video now that we're 8 or 9 months out?
Hi, brilliant video, thanks. Have you tried these with effects pedals before them? I'm interested to see how they cope with distortion or fuzz, and if they react in the same way as a real SVT would. Some bass preamps such as sansamp don't stack well and really suck the life out of fuzz pedals when placed at the end of the chain.
I haven’t tried the Ampeg with effects, but the Origin held up great to lots of fuzz and some spring reverb really nicely on our last tour. Thanks for watching!
In the first, "Clean and Warm" round (and, yes, I've paused in the middle), I preferred #1 -- seemed more even and the notes seemed to have better support through the register. The overall vibe, though, I thought was pretty similar. In the second and third rounds, with varying degrees of breakup, I thought they were pretty different. In the second round, I thought #2 brought out the pick attack a lot better in the mix -- you might or might not want this -- though #1 was still a little more full and even sounding. Still, my immediate instinct was to go for #2. In the third round, I'd go with #1 again, because I felt the lows were a little better supported as you went down the E-string. That could be my (very modest) monitors, though, or the way I'm listening. In the soloed clips (appreciate their inclusion, btw) the character of the breakup in the top of the range was more buzzy (for me, in a not entirely pleasant way) with #2. I wonder if #1 might be set to get a similar degree of breakup and attack as #2, while keeping the evenness and fullness I liked (and wonder if #2 could be set to get a little less buzz up top and some of the more full, even quality I heard with #1). You probably made efforts that way, already, though, and I haven't played either of these. Note envelope struck me as a little rounder with #1, FWIW (which is another thing one might or might not prefer, depending on context). I think I'll come back and give this a more thorough listen, with decent headphones, but if I had to pick one right now, it'd be #1. Now to listen to the rest of the video... EDIT (after finishing video): 1) Noted, on the flat/noon EQ on each, for the test. 2) As recorded here, the Ampeg pedal does sound pretty close to your actual B-15! I wonder how that'd hold with more aggressive settings of the B-15.
I liked number 1, as a bassist, more low end between 50-100 HZ. Where #2 had that midrange punch which would cut through the mix well between 100-150 HZ. Depends on application, but instinctually like #1 for that fatter low end.
I prefer origins sound. Thanks for doing the comparison. Ampeg should just put the B15 in a pedal on its own. Would like to see the Bass Rig against the Nobel.
For me there's one important feature the bass rig has and the sgt doesn't: that's the blend control. Especially with overdriven sounds I really want to have some clean signal in the mix for punch and definition. This gets even more important as the sgt's overdrive sounds way warmer and creamier and doesn't cut through in the mix as well imo. It'also uses digital modelling, which has much more potential for getting into runtime/phase cancelling issues if you try to mix it with a clean d.i. signal, I suspect. I had these problems with my HX-Stomp trying to mix an SVT with IR with a dry, unprocessed signal path. Can really be a pain in the ass, I think.
Hey, Philip, if You compare Origin effects bass rig vs noble in terms of tube warmth, which would you prefer? What about the character? Which is more Ampegish, probably Origin effects....
Clean - both sound pretty similar - so ok if that's the style you are looking for I would go with any of them. For edge of breakup and cranked I would go with No2 - it has got more personality. The question now is, which one would fit better in a mix.
I bought the Ampeg about a month after it came out. I run a Markbass 12” combo with the 12” extension. Out of all the preamp pedals I’ve ran, I haven’t found one that sounds better than just running into the MB rig. The Ampeg was a game changer. I like how I can dial slight grit into m sound now. And it sounds legit. I have not tried the origin effects. I’ll be honest when you were doing the blind test I was hoping #1 was the Ampeg. 😂
As a mixing engineer more than a bass player, my preference is 2 for the first sample and 1 in all the other ones, 1 sounds more mix ready for me an my taste, 2 seems to take too much place in a mix. But depending on the song, it could be the other way around, as you say the two sound good. Hi from europe
Interestingly I preferred 1# on the a b test due to its subtle changes. The ampeg b15 blew my mind though. Soooooooo similar to the real thing i couldn’t tell when you switched
Hi Phil - Thanks a lot for this video - I already use the '64 Black Panel from Origin Effects (for a Fender Bassman Sound) and think about to get me an "Ampeg" too but something completely different: which strings do you use on the P-bass and the Mustang?
@@philipconradmusicoh - that's a pity - the P-Bass sounds great with these Strings, good balanced - I'm always looking for good flats - normally I use La Bella, but some are not more available
I have both these pre amps right now A B ing them in my band. I like the sound of the Ampeg alone but the Origin Effects seems to easily help cut through the noise. It seems like it is more powerful than the Ampeg. With the SGT channel on I like the sound but have a difficult time cutting through with it.
Haha I called it. #1 was clearly trying to be the most SVT in each sample. Makes sense - it’s what most people think of as a bass amp sound, it’s what the market its. It does it very well. But also that’s how I knew it wouldn’t be the ampeg lol. I don’t know if it’s to protect the sales/mythology of the full SVT head, or what it is, but ampeg’s transistor stuff just never sounds like an SVT compared to the competition.
Great comparison. Interesting - very little price difference between the two on this side of the pond. I also preferrred the #1 Origin sound, and you could see from the scope that it was fuller throughout the range while the Ampeg had an uppermid scoop , biting upper frequencies and seemed a little fizzy in the upper frequencies. Still, the eq can probably tame that. Everything Origin build is market leading in terms of quality, but that Ampeg just does sooooo much and the option of running it as a practice unit with headphones is significant for me too. Tough call. I think someone like me who has very little gear will go Ampeg, while a player who a ready has a lot of the Ampeg’s functionality will go for Bassrig. Ie it’s only about the finer points of the sound if you have the other bases (basses?) covered.
I definitely preferred #1, but I only really cared about the difference in the 2nd and 3rd examples, which wasn't how I was really planning on using the pedal anyways.
Yea... For the first 2 test I was going for the ampeg, but when it comes to overdrive, it sound pretty bad to me. The Super Vintage sound a lot nicer for that overdriven tone. Thanks for the video!
As an svt i was at a loss. Until we got to the agressive part where i would be at most, i preferred the the origin effects. If i wanted a b15 id jump on the ampeg.
I have the impression that when comparing the b15 you are using your own cabin simulation. (purple led) different settings or purchased from another manufacturer?
I dont have a preference for #1, maybe the bassrig is a touch better. But for 2 and 3, there is no competition. Ampeg's distortion sounds so weird in the mix, like a sore thumb. Bassrigs drive sounds so much better.
I definitely preferred #1 in every single case, except when the #2 was soloed in the first section. In the mix, I did not like #2, however. So, definitely the Origin Effects BassRig for me. I should probably mention that what I am actually using is a DSM & Humboldt Electronics Simplifier Bass Station, which is also modelled after an Ampeg SVT.
I felt like both sounded good but in different ways. The first one was really consistent and sounded like it was a finished track on a record. The second one I felt like you could hear more of the nuances and dynamics of the playing come through. The biggest difference to me is in the upper mids, plus the first one sounded like there was a compressor on. They are likely voiced slightly differently, but I'm guessing that you could get them to sound the same if you played with the EQ a little bit.
So. Before the reveal, I think my go to is 1 because of how versatile the sound is. I didn’t like that 2 is automatically more filtered. I know that that the Super Vintage has a blend and drive so maybe if the point of comparison was to have the knobs at 12 o clock then 2 in the Origin Effects. I don’t know. BRB.
lol. I was dead wrong! Great, I’m buying origin effects. It’s the one I wanted to like, that I happened to like, and I’m glad that I liked. Excellent video, engaging, to the point, and helpful.
My preference is #1 in all samples, especially in the samples with more drive.
Really appreciate you doing this!

EDIT (after finishing video):
1) Noted, on the flat/noon EQ on each, for the test.
2) As recorded here, the Ampeg pedal does sound pretty close to your actual B-15! I wonder how that'd hold with more aggressive settings of the B-15.
Great insights! Thanks for sharing and watching. Glad to have you here ⚡️
I liked number 1, as a bassist, more low end between 50-100 HZ.
Yeah i've been wanting to see a good BassRig Vs Noble comparison. Would be great to see how the tube emulation of the Origin stacks up against tubes.
Great video, side note: where did you get that wooden thumb rest on your mustang?
I really enjoy your videos, thanks dude.
I present to you; The most pleasant UA-camr in the game.
Hi Phil - Thanks a lot for this video - I already use the '64 Black Panel from Origin Effects (for a Fender Bassman Sound) and think about to get me an "Ampeg" too
but
something completely different: which strings do you use on the P-bass and the Mustang?
Thanks for watching! I honestly don’t remember what I had on the P. The mustang: D’addario half-rounds.
@@philipconradmusicoh - that's a pity - the P-Bass sounds great with these Strings, good balanced -
I'm always looking for good flats - normally I use La Bella, but some are not more available
I liked the extra saturation on #2
I definitely leaned towards number 1. I was curious if you could tell if one took pedals better than the other?
2 all day - Long live the mid range!
The thing that would make the Origin even better would be having the ability to switch between clean and dirty.
Just add a dcx bass to push the SV. Iv got both, works great
This is a hard one. During the first test I preferred 1, but for the breakup and aggressive test, I preferred 2.
Go with your gut. You know what you like. Thanks for watching!
For clean tones they are both good. Any amount of grit though I prefer the bass rig.
Number 1 for clarity and presence
Great comparison. Interesting - very little price difference between the two on this side of the pond. I also preferrred the #1 Origin sound, and you could see from the scope that it was fuller throughout the range while the Ampeg had an uppermid scoop , biting upper frequencies and seemed a little fizzy in the upper frequencies. Still, the eq can probably tame that. Everything Origin build is market leading in terms of quality, but that Ampeg just does sooooo much and the option of running it as a practice unit with headphones is significant for me too. Tough call. I think someone like me who has very little gear will go Ampeg, while a player who a
ready has a lot of the Ampeg’s functionality will go for Bassrig. Ie it’s only about the finer points of the sound if you have the other bases (basses?) covered.
Can't wait for an ampeg sgt vs vt bass ❤
Great video. So crazy that Ampeg, the creator of the actual amp, is not as good as the clone!
Ampeg user for 20 years almost every model, prefer Number 2 , excellent sgt DI, preamp which i currently own, great video
I definitely preferred #1, but I only really cared about the difference in the 2nd and 3rd examples, which wasn't how I was really planning on using the pedal anyways.
For sample 1 & 2, I preferred #2. For sample 3, #1 was better.
1 sounded better until the dirty, 2 won that one. But the B15 sound was unbelievable and almost indistinguishable from the real one.
I have the Bass Rig Pedal. Love it!
Nice!
