  • Ray Ellis enlisted at the start of World War II, driven by a strong sense of duty to defend his country. Over a year of service in North Africa has transformed him from an eager recruit into a battle-hardened veteran. During his time in the desert, Ray has participated in numerous engagements, facing the harsh realities of war on a daily basis.
The North African desert is an unforgiving environment. Ray describes it as a "vast expanse of nothing," characterized by extreme temperatures, relentless sun, and scarce resources. The constant exposure to these harsh conditions has left him physically and mentally exhausted. The endless cycle of combat, witnessing the deaths of comrades, and the pervasive presence of flies and disease add to his fatigue. The psychological toll of seeing excrement and rotting bodies, coupled with the persistent danger, has led Ray to question whether he will ever return home.
The German forces in North Africa are commanded by General Erwin Rommel, famously known as the "Desert Fox." Rommel's reputation for tactical genius and daring maneuvers has earned him and his forces a formidable status among the Allies. Rommel's strategy involves rapid, decisive movements that have kept the British forces on the defensive. His goal is to seize strategic locations, including the crucial port of Tobruk.
