should i get a rec letter from someone who hasn't taught a class i've taken but advises a school extracurricular i've been dedicated in & that i have a good relationship with?
Amanda If you have a closer relationship with that teacher than you do your other teachers who you have in class, then I would consider it. Try and research your schools and find out what they’re looking for. For Stanford - they recommend a teacher from grade 11-12 in one of your core subjects/language. I didn’t completely follow this with my dance teacher letter - though I still had her for class and activities outside of class. I do not know the full extent of your situation. If this person is a sports coach for example, I would advise against it. I think they want to know how you are as a student AND a person. However, if you really value this relationship with this teacher over your other academic teachers, then it is something to think about. As general advice, I would try and stick to teachers you have in class, but your case may be special depending on what activity you’re in with this teacher/your relationship with them.
Great video I have a question can my piano teacher write me a rec letter? She was my music teacher in elementary school. Been taking lessons every week for 5 years now
Hey Jasmine! So I’ve been wondering about my rec letters, I want to ask my english and economics teachers to write mine but my English teacher no longer teaches at our school?? She taught me English last year (junior year) and I have a really strong relationship with her but since she doesn’t teach at my school anymore would she count as an outside letter? Or can I count her as one of my 2 inside letters?
I believe that retired teachers count as outside recommendations. I am not 100% positive though, so I would ask you counselor to make sure. They should know where to put it!
do you think it would affect me poorly if i chose two science teachers for my two rec letters?? only because i know that the two of them know me the best? and girl thank you SO MUCH for these videos. they’re all so helpful!!
Kate C I would not recommend it. As a general rule, you want to try and have your two letters be contrasting - showing different academic areas that you are strong in rather than both highlighting the same thing. And thank you for your support! I am glad you find my videos helpful (:
Jasmine Rodriguez okay i figured that would be best too so thank you!! and i do have another quick question (i’m sorry i’m just really stressed about apps) specifically about u of m’s essay question asking about what specific qualities attract you to the undergraduate school you’re applying for (or something like that). did you write only specifically write about why you wanted to get into the col. of engineering or just about u of m in general??? thank you so freaking much and im probably being really annoying
do you think it hurts to have your letter from a sophomore year ap history teacher? she by far knows me the best out of all of my teachers but colleges prefer junior or senior year
Vivian Nguyen I would try and stick to teachers from junior and senior year. If your sophomore year ap history teacher carried on a relationship with you in some way during the rest of high school - maybe you were her teacher aid or involved in a club she headed, then that would be a reason she would be a good candidate to write a letter. If you REALLY don’t have other good options from junior/senior year, then you just want to put your best foot forward.
If you worked with a faculty member at a particular university on research, would it be advisable to ask them to write a recommendation letter if you are applying to the college at which they work?
ana kevorkian Yes! I think that’s a great idea for your outside recommender. As long as it is allowed by the university, it would be great to have someone on the inside speaking highly of you.
do you know if it would be considered an outside letter if the person you got it from was involved in your school, but you had done a couple summers of internships with them that were not tied to the school, as well as taken classes with them? sorry im a little late to the part here
paradoxical disaster As long as they are not a current employee of the school, I believe they can be considered an outside recommender. I would just to your school counselor about your situation to make sure!
Hii will an outside recommendation letter from a friend, who is also the student body president, help strengthen my application? Especially when she has known me since elementary school and knows all my strengthens, passions etc and can write very well?
Sajida Batool Personally, I don’t feel that peer recommendations help in strengthening an application because they are not an authority figure. But that it just my personal opinion! If you feel that it would be a valuable addition, definitely consider it and get a second opinion.
thank you so much for making this video! all of your college videos are very helpful!! :)
Thank you so much for this video!! Is not waving your right to review letters bad? What did you do or what do you recommend?
Always waive the right to review letters! It just solidifies the validity of your letters and the honesty in their content.

would it matter if I asked for two STEM teachers? Like would it lower my chances?

Colleges prefer junior/senior year teachers because they know you best academically in current times.
