    Here’s a little insight into my college application and the kinds of things I did in high school that helped get me into top universities!

      I have a question, your first two activities alone add up to 45 hours per week, wouldn't that seem unrealistic in the eyes of an admissions officer, as 45 hours per week plus 40 hours of school and a few hours of homework a night and your 8 other activities doesn't seem realistic.

    • @JasmineRodriguez
      @JasmineRodriguez  6 років тому +6

      Ashay Shah Good question! My first two activities were each in different grades. The first activity being 11-12th, and the second 9-10th, so these were not activities I was in at the same time. These were my main high school activities that included technique classes, rehearsals, and weekend performances, so they took up the majority of my time outside of school.

    Really helpful video, especially now that I am beginning to fill out my common app. Watching this makes me wish I was more involved in my first three years of high school. Even though I am on par with the top universities in terms of GPA and testing, I feel like my lackluster list of activities is going to be the deciding factor into why I might not get into some of these selective schools.

    How bad does it look if most of my activities are from 11th and 12th grade? I was pretty introverted and uncomfortable in my school in 9th and 10th grade, mostly due to moving midway through 9th grade to a new school, and I didn't really participate that much. I know it obviously looks better if you've committed all four years, but is it detrimental to have most of my activities be in my later high school career?

    • @JasmineRodriguez
      @JasmineRodriguez  6 років тому +6

      Shaun Diebel Anything that you’ve done is valid. While it would’ve been nice to have done things over the last 4 years, you can’t change the past now, and honestly the last two years are the most important. If what you DO have is important to you, then that’s all that matters!

  • @ThanhNguyen-jf6nq
    @ThanhNguyen-jf6nq 5 років тому +6

    Hi, I notice that consistency/commitment plays a huge role in your extracurriculars. I was wondering if you could offer me some advice.
    I finished my freshman year in an international school in VN (I joined a small environmental club - pretty successful, we got on the news, did a lot of stuff for the school, organized a huge event, composted more than 450kg of school's food waste). Since my family moved to Australia in the summer, I am already almost done with my sophomore year (I skipped half of the tenth grade) without having done much as I was settling in. I think I'll be moving to an IB school again next year. I have started a small blog and am planning to open up an environmental club (but I'll only be staying in this school for less than 2 months). I have also been in the badminton clubs at my respective schools for the past three years, and am planning to continue playing badminton in the future (though I am not really good at it).
    Since my current school only offers the Australian state certificate (which isn't exactly recognized internationally), I would have to move schools (again) if I were to do the IB diploma. I am thinking about volunteering to teach kids after school at my local primary school, starting a small compost batch for my local community, start a small website for kids to learn extra math and stuff and/or get a job. As I would also have to help my mom out with chores and teach my brother extra English after school, I feel like my time is limited and I can't do much. Since my parents are planning to go back to Vietnam every break, I feel like getting a part-time job is not exactly possible (I can't commit). I'm currently very stressed out as I feel like I don't have any extracurriculars at all and my sophomore year is coming to an end.
    My two dream schools are USC and Stanford (huge difference), and I'm pretty sure I won't get in.

    • @JasmineRodriguez
      @JasmineRodriguez  5 років тому +5

      tangerine It seems like you have a lot on your plate. Make sure to include all of this information in your application. Working to help support your family is something valid that you can put in the “additional info” section. What you described seems like you are making the most of your situation and are making as much of an impact as you can on each community that you become a part of, even if it’s only for a short period of time. Don’t do or don’t do anything specifically to get into a school. That’s not the way to go. Everyone I know who got into Stanford and USC are smart people who just pursued their passions in high school and showcased these passions in their app. Everything top students do is genuine, and if you stick to who you are and portray your entire story well in your app (everything that you had to commit to including family and moving and things) then you will give yourself the best shot. Keep making the most of your situation. No one can blame you for having to move all the time or having to support your family...those are valid things that schools should know took up some of your time. Don’t discount these things - embrace them. They are part of your story.

      Anything that you spent time doing counts as an activity. If it was something that was important to you, definitely include it! Activities can be anything from school clubs to jobs to even watching your siblings. Anything that matters to you counts!

    Hello! Really awesome video. How did u manage time doing all that ?
    BTW I am really confused with this "ed and rd" admission processes. It's that do students have better chances while applying for ed than rd? My friends say to me to apply ed or I won't get much chance in rd. So I am kinda worried coz application deadlines for colleges are coming nearer and nearer and I haven't completed essay sections yet.

    • @JasmineRodriguez
      @JasmineRodriguez  6 років тому +2

      Prabesh Humagain I did not do all of these activities at the same time, and I only did 1-2 extremely time consuming activities per year with the rest being minimum time commitment or for a specific time period! For ED and RD, check out my latest upload and DM me on instagram if you have questions after watching it.

    • @morgan0321
      @morgan0321 5 років тому +4

      depends on the school! some schools do have a higher acceptance rate during ED or EA because the application pool is much smaller than RD. however, many students usually only apply early if they are completely set on one specific school, especially if it is a binding decision. if you're not sure exactly where you want to go and would rather have options once decisions are released, I would suggest applying RD for the most part, maybe EA for some schools if you want since that isn't binding :)

    I feel that I might be in trouble due to lack of leadership positions. Are there any of your classmates at Stanford that have maybe 1-3 leadership roles? I feel my activities were strong-ish, but I heard leadership is a big factor.

    • @JasmineRodriguez
      @JasmineRodriguez  5 років тому +6

      Phillip Tran I only had 3 leadership positions and only one of which that I really cared about. Leadership is definitely important, but it also needs to be real. Leadership in a bunch of random clubs is not as powerful as fewer positions in things you really care about!

    Hi Jasmine, thanks for this amazing video. I’ll be applying to Stanford early and I’m really nervous about my extracurriculars, I went to different high school in a different country, did a lot of extracurriculars in my 9th grade and moved to the U.S. in my 10th grade year so I didn’t do much since I was tryna get adjusted in the new environment and then I went crazy on extracurriculars in my 11th grade, started my own clubs, joined some so I had a lot of leadership positions, had some Saturday programs at the University of Washington and e.t.c. I’m planning on doing the same in my senior year so would that hurt my chances at Stanford?

    • @JasmineRodriguez
      @JasmineRodriguez  6 років тому +1

      halisa Mohamed You cannot change the past, you can only take advantage of the future. Don’t dwell on lost opportunities in your early high school years. If you make the most of your upperclassmen years and have things you’re genuinely passionate about, that will shine through.
