In Glasgow and and most other parts of Scotland we don't use the word "why" we use "how" instead. You may ask "how's that?" as opposed to "why's that?".
Some words make sense with why. Here in American you can’t just ask “how?” Because they’ll mistaken you for asking how did you do something. So if you want to know why someone did something, you’d ask why?
My deepest condolences and sympathies for such a great man´s passing away. I am a teacher of the English language and I was about to download this video when I read the sad news. R.I.P. Stephen. From Lima-Perú
I actually sought this video out to watch again years later and enjoyed it again the second time through. So saddened to learn in the comments of Stephen's passing. Thank you for having such a good sense of humour here Stephen. Will remember you whenever showing this to others to showcase a Scottish accent. As a fellow scot had wondered if I'd bump into you on the streets but alas not to be. My thoughts are with your family.
Apart from being a bit unhygienic, I don't see anything wrong with seeing it. Though from the hygienic aspect I would wear underwear under a kilt, though I'd happily go naked or wearing just a t-shirt if the weather's all right.
I'm glad he left this video for us. I'm a Japanese guy but I've got a friend in London who's a Scotsman. I've never met him but I'm looking forward to talking with him on the phone. Thanks Stephen.
Love his accent. My maternal grandmother was from Glasgow but I never had a chance to meet her. So sorry to hear about Stephen dying 2 years ago. I always loved his smiling face as he was so charming & that made him attractive. The best thing a person can wear is a smile. Listening to his accent is nice too
I'm an American from the eastern U.S. and I've been working on a Scottish accent for a play; this is one of the best videos I've found for practice due to the way it breaks out individual vowel transformations, providing multiple examples (with repetition!) each time. It was quite a blow to read afterward of Stephen's passing: all I can say is that his sweetness and personality are clearly still affecting people years later and I'm grateful for getting to be a small part of this small bit of his legacy.

This a really helpful teaching video and a fitting memorial to the lovely speaking voice and gentle humour of Stephen. Condolences to all who miss him.
It's great to see how we non-native speakers can learn so much from this channel... It helps loads on understanding different people with different accents and dialects with a practical approach with the appropriate preparation. Thanks A bunch Anna and Stephen for helping to better understand the roots of the English language where the roots don't quite sprout. Thanks for blooming the flowers.
Having discovered that my family has Scottish heritage a few years ago. I have enjoyed doing research on not just lineage, but culture. This was a great video about dialect. Thank you for sharing, especially Stephen. He did have a great smile.
Well you probably have a lot of different cultures in your dna. I’m Scottish but I have Scottish, English, Irish, Welsh, Italian, French, Swedish, danish and Norwegian ancestry. If you’re from a country like America or Australia you’ll probably have even more diversity.
I am fascinated with dialects, so I thoroughly enjoyed this! I am originally from Georgia, considered the Deep South in the US, and we are often perceived as ignorant. There are many different Southern dialects, all traceable to the country and particular counties of origin. More, please!
Anna, Thanks for this one. I had an auntie (who emigrated to and lived in Melbourne) who had a very broad Glaswegian accent, much broader than Stephen's but it sounds similar. She had lots of idioms; when we visited as kids we had lots of fun trying to understand her. When she visited us in the early 2000's one of my friends couldn't understand some of what she said, much to Aunt B's amusement, but from long experience I could. So you do pick up the lingo and can understand the accent. One of my favourite words was "napper", as in “Ave you hurt your napper?" (Have you hurt your head?). She was born in the 30's but "napper" is still current as a cousin over there used it in a post the other day. That's why I decided to use it here. Northern Scottish isn't as broad as Southern Scottish if my relatives are anything to go by and some of the idioms are different.
Napper is a great one which I use. 'Pus' or 'nut' are great alternatives. Though 'pus' means face e.g you can tell someone to 'shut their pus', that means shut your face (shut up)
Stephen, thank you for your talent and laughs. May your be in peace and joy. I was born in Glasgow, emigrated, grew up in a very Glaswegian speaking household and to this day some words or saying some, people ask, Where you from? Love to listen to you Stephen. You shall live on to many listeners.

Point of info: the dress rules for the kilt, which actually come from Scottish battalions of the British Army, are that underwear is not worn except if you intend to dance or compete in sport. The reason is purely practical, as you'd know if you had ever tried to use the bathroom in an 8-yard kilt.

Many comments on here about Stephen's smile. That is his genuine smile - he never did learn to smile properly. It was like a standing joke with all his friends. Despite the corny smile you couldn't have met someone more entertaining, fun person with a heart of pure gold.
Nice to hear a proper Glasgow accent. I have great trouble persuading some people I’m from Glasgow because I don’t speak like Billy Connolly. That his posed smile was more a grimace, I take as solid evidence that the man was quite genuine and unable, or at least uncomfortable, affecting any form of artifice; an admirable but, sad to say, increasingly uncommon quality. His passing, I'm sure, was and is not only a loss to family and friends, but a loss to those who value the presence of an honest civility and decency in a society.
I’m Australian and I enjoy watching some of the videos on this channel, listening to some of the accents found across the UK. I just have a bit of an interest in them. I only found out last night while scrolling through the comments that the Scotsman in the video had sadly passed away back in 2018. I’m so sorry to hear what happened three years ago, may you Rest in Peace Stephen 💙🤍
As a student who lived in Glasgow for about two years, I think Stephen's Glaswegian accent only represents about 60% of the real accent?? Probably for the sake of this video. A real Glaswegian accent is a pain in the ass to understand, but I just LOVE IT! LOVE THE ACCENT, THE PEOPLE AND THE GLOOMY WEATHER! 😂
IV BEEN to glasgow the accent is much stronger than what i'm listening 2 also people don't walk down the road wearing kilts only on special occasions such as weddings and certain events
The Glaswegian accent is my favorite by far! But I do love the northern Dublin accent as well. Obviously it’s not part of Great Britain but I would still love if you could do an episode on that.
I came here because of how much I love Fitz from agents of Shield! Great video. Thank you! RIP Stephen, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your loved ones.
Anna, you might look up Doubleboost (John Mills) here on UA-cam. I'd bet that he might be willing to help you. He's an older bloke in Newcastle Upon Tyne so it might be just what you're looking for. I think he cleans up the accent for most of his videos but in a few videos, on some occasions when he's with his mates, it's full-on and I can't understand much of what he's saying.

"...by the way." Oh skilful way you slipped that in Glasgow Brian!!! RIP Stephen. What a truly delightful Ambassador for Glasgow you were!
Love the Scottish accent!

@@nedie3815 my mother's Family comes from Glasgow and my fathers side from st.petersburg and i can tell You are right when i speak english every english nativ speaker tells me i'm scottish the Rest Off the world tell me is russian accent...
because tis the proper way to speak english. Every letter is pronounced clearly. A well spoken Glaswegian is one of the easiest accents to understand.
I thought Bulgarians speak like Denitslava? 🤔
What a fascinating English teacher!
This was fun. I love the Glaswegian accent.
it sounds like he is singing lol there is always a lute to a scottish accent. LOVE IT
That is the best outfit for a hot summer . Your ball are getting some nice fresh air
It's very heavy wool. Shorts would be cooler
@@juliantheapostate8295 True. A kilt is very heavy and thick, so you do get warm in them.
I had no idea my tongue "tapped" the roof of my mouth with words like green and grass. Mind blown. Never noticed that before.
It´s called phonetics and phonology lad :)
Wulver it reminds me of Spanish. You guys basically just use a soft 'd' sound for the 'r'
OH MY GOD - Just tried saying Green Grass with a soft d - mind blown!
Right haha? It's weird how we don't notice our own phonetics.
Wulver I was thinking the exact same thing 😂😂
“Naughty naughty”
I just found the video. Very nice and informative. Sad to read about Stephens passing away. May he rest in peace.
Bless his heart! He was so excited, absolutely amazing presentation!😆🤩
I've never heard the term 'takeaway' (5.53} spoken by a Glaswegian. They invariably use 'Kerry oot' (carry out).
😂 😂 😂
Paco Gomez i’m from glasgow and we say take away, never heard of a carry out
My dad calls take away a carry out for me a carry out is alcohol.
And yes I pronounce it Kerry out 😂
A kerry pot in Glasgow is alcohol and we do say takeaway lol.. as in food takeaway.. I live in the east end of Glasgow...
I kept thinking "Cool Whip."
Me too! Lolll
From another Stuey...😀
Greetings from Scotland 😊 Have a wonderful day everyone 🌻 RIP Stephen...so sorry to hear🌟💐
That guy is as comfortable in front of that camera than I am in social gatherings
syamil jamil yass wit a man haga
There are different accents within Glasgow, often related to class. This guy's is pretty soft and quite middle class.
Agreed; to do more extreme learning i recommend hearing the Glaswegian accents in the brilliant film "Neds"
Dunnae see how it's a pain to unnerstaun to be honest, we put mare emphasise on ur words, shid be easier to unnerstaun us
IV BEEN to glasgow the accent is much stronger than what i'm listening 2 also people don't walk down the road wearing kilts only on special occasions such as weddings and certain events
The Glaswegian accent is my favorite by far! But I do love the northern Dublin accent as well. Obviously it’s not part of Great Britain but I would still love if you could do an episode on that.
Did the Canadian 'ou' come from the large Scottish immigration?
Yes that's why they say words like aboot the same as us
Whit ye on aboot? 😂
Yeah except hardly anyone in Canada says aboot. Most say abowt or aboat. We had more Irish immigration :)
@@murderoustendencies I think way more Scottish went to canada, an anormal amount
hmaren the same with a Geordie (Newcastle) accent it sounds very similar to Scottish.
I am in love with scottish accent now.
I came here because of how much I love Fitz from agents of Shield! Great video. Thank you! RIP Stephen, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your loved ones.
Glaswegian r sound sounds exactly like Russian r sound :)
Or the swiss r ;-)
I mean, most slavic languages say r like that.
@@nathanvonsiebenthal4446 or spanish
Similar with French too
Like the hungarian r.
What a shock that news is. He's just a young man.
But he was so young... I am so sorry to for your loss. Thank you for the video.
Great content, Anna. Do next a video about the Geordie dialect please.
I want to, I just need to find someone with that accent, who is willing to come on to my channel.
Bashar Ghadanfar yes yes second this
Oh, yes, I agree with this.
