Scotland is one of my favourite countries to visit. Though it couldn't be more different than my Mediterranean island home, I feel as if it's a home away from home. The people are so helpful! And I love their accent! Luckily, I'm used to listening to Kevin Bridges on talk shows, so I mostly manage to understand the accent after the first day or two as my brain acclimatises to the sound and rhythm.

So cool that you made this video! I'm a Norwegian but also 1/12 Scottish from my mom's part of the family and in recent years, I've become very interested in my Scottish roots. I've never been to Scotland but I'd love to visit there someday. I have a tie and a scarf in the pattern of the Davidson clan, the clan my ancestors on my mom's side of the family used to belong to and it reminds me of how connected I feel to Scotland everytime I wear them although I've never been there. The Scottish accent is so charming and fun to listen to, it makes me wanna practice doing that accent myself to honour my roots more. I usually speak with an American accent and it is similar to the Scottish one in some regards (both are rhotic, for instance) but also very different, as it's fairly easy to tell the two apart. You did a great job presenting the Scottish accent in this video! :)

It's so cool, lad. I feel you. Despite me living in Ukraine and being Ukrainian for 95 per cent, I wasn't interested in my culture at all before 2022. Now I feel empowered and proud of what I know about myself. And we share a lot in common with Scottish people in terms of history, especially oppression from impires.
      Staying strong!

In Ireland Scotland and Wales they speak their own language as well. But in their dialects are also pronounced. I love Irish accent because it is closer to our Urdu accent.

Wow! You are spot on when it comes to Scotland. Everything you said is so true. Scotland, as I mentioned in my first novel, is magical and enchanting even when it is raining. I went there last year and it rained a lot but those light rainy and misty days added the mystery and magic against the almost seen Highlands. I could have not said it better. I envy you English people to have this in your backyard. If I lived in England, I would go there at least once a year.
If I knew you knew a lot about Scotland and their accents, I would have asked you to be my source material person for my first novel. Oh well, it is published now. I did do the Scottish accent but it was a general one; I used a special website that translates English sentences to general Scottish sentences. I tried very hard to find a person with a Glaswegian accent for my female protagonist but was unsuccessful. My apologies to the people of Glasgow if I got most of it wrong.
Anyway, it is good to know. I love the way you do the Scottish accent. I laughed too but it is still much better than what I can do.
P.S. You forgot to mention the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Edinburgh. What a great show!

Good day bonny lass , the Scottish accent sounds so cute !
I m reading the book " Seduction of a Highland Lass" at the moment ,
by Maya Banks , and the described Scotland characters are
indeed wilder , rugged , a bit harsher and a
bit riskier than city dwellers . Family names normally start
with Mc ... in Scotland ?
    2. Reminds me of the movie " The Highlander " with star roles
for rough men - Christopher Lambert - and - Sean Connery -in their glory days , and
legendary film music by pop group Queen . 🎵

First of all, I'm an American. Years ago, I visited a friend in Kilmarnock (SSW of Glasgow). We went to his local pub and he introduced me to his friends. Two things happened: (1) I didn't buy a drink all night, and (2) I only understood about 10% of the conversation 😂. Well, and I suppose the third thing was I stumbled back to the house [much] later that night...

Kudos to you, Katharine, for courageously making this video. As someone who is Scottish and who has been a TEFL teacher for many decades, this made me smile. Some of it you had spot on; well done. Other words sounded nothing like anything I've ever heard in any part of Scotland..... which only served to underline all the subtle nuances. Even though I'm trained in phonetics, I don't think I'd be brave enough to attempt to model regional accents of England. (Although I speak six languages, accents are not particularly my strong suit.) Thanks for all the affirming comments on Scottish landscape and culture.

Hi sweet Katherine, here we are with another of your great videos!!! I presume that it should be difficult for us to understand the Scottish accent compare to the English one! Anyway Scotland is gorgeous, I went there in 1997,in August precisely during the Fringe festival, it stroke me profoundly... The landscape is spectacular and apart from Edinbourgh and Glasgow that I appreciated a lot, I went to the isle of Sky and visited also a spooky castle perched on a hilltop, some miles distant from Edinbourgh, at the moment I don't remember it's name.

Hi my lovely, my Rose of England 🌹😊
You know, I ran across your music last week and I fell in love with it.
Only one question: why aren't you worldwide famous? :-)
Love your harmonies and your melodies; your voice is so so soft, so sweet and your magnificent and rich playing conveys an oneiric and ethereal atmosphere. So Beautiful ! White birds and Four-leaf clover are probably my faves ! 🤗and Wild Rose and River boat are also great compositions and things of beauty !
May I ask you if you have other pieces and if we can listen to them somewere ...
Do you still compose and sing (I really do hope so!) and may I ask how many songs (ballpark figure) you have written 'till now? ...

Well, I imagine that the buisness is pretty hard and how difficult it must be to break through ...
Whatever, you're amazingly talented ! Please, keep on playing and singing !
Why on earth did you take them out of these platforms?
Please, don't take it down from where it remains, I count on you, that would be a crime ! Promise me !🙏
To answer your question, a friend of mine, Isabella, from south-eastern Berkshire published some of her amazing poems here and I thought of typing your name ... that's how ;-)
I wanted to ask you, wouldn't you be bothered if I put the link here? I think the world (or at least your followers here) must know ! Of course I prefer to ask your permission before.
By the way, if you ever hanged out toward St Pancras shopping center, you may run across Brendan Kavanagh. He is a boogie woogie (mainly) pianist I follow on Y.T. who plays the public piano (an Elton John gift!) in the shopping mall and interacts with the passers-by; He's very nice and sometimes some people play with him or alone; I wish I could see you there someday !
Here is the link of his channel and a video where he played with Ben Toury, an incredibly talented French pianist who is autodidact and quite unfairly not enough known ! (Terry Miles and his bro were there too!). The whole thing, a kind of improvised live session among friends and a little crowd is a real enjoyment to watch !

I had to reward several times..with subtitles to make a link with my brain 😅. Wow ! But then now I can figure It out! Thank you for your explanations.. Christophe from Paris France.

Katherine, I have watched the Scottish music band. They have a large musical instrument like a saxophone and it has a lovely , melodious sound. Scotland has many historical places, including old castles. I love the famous British actress Emma Thompson who acted in Jane Austin's film " Sense and Sensibility" Katherine, I love the Scottish accents you taught to me. Thank you my best English teacher Katherine

Once I got aquainted with a Turkish owner of the shop and he introduced himself as Thomas.I said the name was s bit unusual for that soil and he explained that one of his parents was from Scotland. So it goes.

My descendant's are from Scotland. Originally, they were MaCrea and morphed into McCraw and then ultimately into McGraw. We came across with Simon Fraser's 78th Highland Regiment of Foot. I think this happened because, when documented, the census takers couldn't understand what was being said and wrote down what they thought it should be. I would love to hear what MaCrea actually sounds like from someone with a thick Scot accent.

Hey Katharine. Interesting as always! I think you made quite a decent Scottish accent. 🥰 I’ve got friends in Scotland, and although they split up, I still keep in touch with him-the Scottish one. He always tries to throw me off balance when texting by adding Scottish slang and words. Never given him the satisfaction, though. I usually Google it instead. 😉
During my last visit to Edinburgh, I was totally dumbstruck at passport control. The passport officer spoke pretty fast with a very noticeable Scottish accent, and I literally didn’t understand a word. 😅
By the way, in one of your previous videos, you recommended reading The Wind in the Willows. I’ve read a lot of English novels over the last thirty-odd years or so, but never The Wind in the Willows. I’ve seen it animated as a child. It’s just an utterly lovable book and story. ❣📖 I didn’t know beforehand that it was written in 1908. So, I love how the story also tells a more underlying story about the society and time period it was written in-at least I think it can be seen as such.

Hi Katharine, greetings from Brazil! How cool and excellent are all your videos. I always enjoy watching them all. The way you explain and comment on everything is always so calm, clear and so easy, that it's just impossible not to understand the different accents and pronunciations. Btw, this scottish tartan dress👗suits very well on you! Maybe you already have listened to any of Al Stewart songs as his famous "Year of the Cat", or "Time Passages" and "Palace of Versailles", but in case you haven't yet. It's totally worth it!. Al Stewart is scottish and he is one of my favorite singers of the '70s. He has an amazing accent with a very clear pronunciation singing and speaking. The way he pronounces the word "river", in his song Year of the Cat, is interesting, and sounds like "reh-var", instead of "ri-ver", the vowels sound so different. Thanks again for the video Katharine! I wish you a wonderful day and week! 🙂💂💐🦋🌹🐞🌻🐝

In a nutshell, the Scottish accent is perfect for Spanish natives 😂. A lot of this words it sounds like my best friends would pronunce it first time 😆. Another great approach to Scotland culture is by reading the Peter May books. They are all dark novels and I think there are BBC series of his books. Well, Katharine, I loved your Scottish outfit today 😍🙈. I missed you this week, did you know it 😊? Thanks a bunch for this introduction! You amazing, princess 😚! And...
Thank you.
