      It didn't feel like that at the time, @an04ker. I was stuck there. We have been going away but we are restricted by work and holiday entitlement. We have our Ireland trip coming up in September, so watch out for that. This year has been a pain with Herman being stuck in garages most of the time

    Really pleased you managed to get it fixed for £15 in the end - can’t believe how much the RAC would charge!

    Just back from Our Scotland trip and now catch up.
    So it was not long after you left the site we would have seen you in Roughton. The road shot you took to show the enterance to the Site was the Old Blacksmiths, we looked at the next house along from it, nearly 8 years ago I live just down the road from there.
    Nice simple fix once you have all the hard work of removing and refitting the arm. Which reminds me I need to replace the Struts on ours as it is getting harder to push the bed up and change the bonnet ones too as they don't hold the bonnet open anymore. Just more thinks to sort along with an oil leak that took put us into limp mode on the drive back from Striling this Morning. The Joys of Motorhoming in an up and coming Classic.

      @HermanHitstheRoad  11 місяців тому

      I've done the bonnet struts as well, @DiggerBuckett. I got fed up of it closing on me while I was under the bonnet. If you are around and have the struts I can giv you a hand, if you like?

    Glad that you got sorted. I am disappointed with how the RAC treated you though as it wasn't practical or safe to drive so they should have helped out. At least it's sorted though. Nice touch personally delivering the items even if it was because of the difficulty in posting them.

    I would have thought the strut just aided the lifting of the bed, not supporting it.

    • @HermanHitstheRoad
      @HermanHitstheRoad  11 місяців тому

      The weight of the bed while down keeps the struts compressed, @tooyoungtobeold8756. When you lift the bed the struts extend to their normal state which keeps the bed up. The seat belt stops the bed coming down on you when you hit a large bump in the road

    Bought 12 year old deffleffs in October. Started it up again in May. Alternator buggered (we think), but new season place 40 minutes away from winter place. Angels watching us.
    Dealer wouldn’t stand by guarantee, but a quick link to consumer protection saw him say ok, we fix but you need to get it to us.
    Tow fee was 🤬. Cheaper to pay for it to be fixed here. But no spots till August.😮
    So yeah hut on wheels. Lucky we are in lovely spot but September is going to see some mileage !
    Well done for getting back on road so quick. Impressive. 🎉

    We had a expensive RAC recovery policy for several years that said it covered any vehicle's or drivers registered to our address. It was only when I enquired about extending that policy for European cover for our motorhome that they then told us the motorhome was not even covered on the policy, so unknowingly we had no cover for the motorhome for all that time. We now have a dedicated motorhome policy that was much cheaper anyway.

    • @HermanHitstheRoad

    I'm not sure if people watch your channel because they are interested in how you get out of your latest scrape, ie it's personality driven and it's you, rather than the motorhoming, that makes your channel successful. Or whether it's for the trips. Anyway, I sympathise because my Hymer is even older than yours and seems to spend most of its time in the garage. So, I tune in very much with the view. "What's happened to Ads this week?" Thanks for helping me understand that I am not alone.

    Where it was originally welded on the back, there wasn't enough penetration (current to melt the parent metal). If the garage had ground off the weld metal from the back to open the hole again the put the strut mount back in and welded it from the back, that would have been easier for them, though it looks like they got a good weld on the front. Question is do you feel you can trust the weld on the other side (knowing now that is a drive critical component)or is it worth whipping that off, grinding off the weld on the back and getting a decent weld on that too... you ahave a very clever mate... I bet he has a welder! Really glad you saved £1185 (if i added up all the money I'd saved I'd be rich...) hope you remember how helpful RAC were when you needed them, when they send you a renewal reminder, like I did! I think you are due for a couple of years of trouble free motoring from Herman soon, you certainly deserve it!😇

    • @HermanHitstheRoad
      @HermanHitstheRoad  11 місяців тому +1

      The garage did exactly as you described, @neiljarvis8911. Welded from the back. It's a good strong weld but I'm now worried about the other side 🤣.

    Oh dear Adz. Another recovery company horror story. Glad you managed to get it fixed. I think I would have risked the seat belt strap, and slowly driven down to the garage to get it fixed. Or you could have propped it up with the wood for the journey.

    Im going to cancel the RAC. They sent me a letter to say its automatic and ive cover for the next 12 months, But its now increased. Nearly £300 a year and reading on they now only cover me for 10 miles. There a joke mate.

    • @HermanHitstheRoad
      @HermanHitstheRoad  11 місяців тому

      Us too they increased it by £80. So I phoned them up and they reduced it. Something about cost of living and the price of parts going up

  • @kennymosireland7069
    @kennymosireland7069 11 місяців тому +1

    Why did you just prop it up with a piece off wood??

    • @HermanHitstheRoad
      @HermanHitstheRoad  11 місяців тому +1

      I don't understand, @kennymosireland7069. Why did we prop it up with wood or why didn't we? Well, the bed is heavy and I didn't want to damage it even more by it twisting due to missing corner so we propped it up with a few bits of wood. We made an upside down U shape because the underneath of the bed is just plastic and a single piece would have damaged the underside.

      I'd love to put happier videos up, @scottbebbington9069 but the problem is...life. We don't make it up, we film stuff that happens to us. Looking at our the UA-cam statistics people prefer the "dramatic" videos more than the "happier" ones.
      Due to life and the problems we've had with Herman we've not had the time to travel much. However, we're heading to Ireland to continue our trip around the WAW in September.
