  • How to Change Chords Quickly and Smoothly
In this beginner guitar lesson, we show you the secret to change chords quickly and smoothly on guitar. One of the most frustrating things for beginner guitar players learning how to play guitar is struggling with making smooth chord changes.
Most beginners assume it is a problem with their left hand (fretting hand) when in fact the secret to changing chords faster is in the right hand (strumming hand).
By incorporating this technique, you will learn how to change chords faster and instantly sound better!

I have been learning guitar for about seven months and fast chord changes are the one thing I haven't been able to master. I've watched countless videos but none of them have really helped. Then I watched this video and it really struck a chord (pun intended). It reminded me that the human brain is pretty amazing and can be taught almost anything, especially with repetition. I started a daily practice routine around this. I'll explain it in the hope it helps others. I set up my metronome at 80 BPM and did the G to D chord change continuously for five straight minutes. Then changed to 90 BPM and repeated it. Then 100 BPM then 110 BPM and finally at 120 BPM. That's 25 minutes in total every day. Dead boring, but very effective at training my brain to keep up. Thank you so much for this video. It has helped me immensely.

I've been learning the guitar for more than 2 months now. I worked on my fretting hand and strumming hand separately. Now I need the coordination with my both hands. Never stopping strumming and forcing the changes are great concepts. I guess this will help. Thank you :)

i've only been playing for about two weeks but your "dramatization" at the beginning is so realistic for me haha. i paused the video and practiced "forcing the change" at a really slow tempo (60bpm) playing quarter note down strums and just changed between all the chords i know so far at random, and immediately noticed my left hand was moving faster to keep up with the strumming. what a great tip!! next i'll work on increasing the tempo and working in different strumming patterns

@@Studio33guitar It's definitely helping. I don't stop and fumble for the chord anymore but play on through, particularly with barre chords. It's the mental part of wanting to challenge myself to improve by letting the right hand force the left to keep up - just like you demonstrated. Next, I need to improve my chord changes while standing.
