  • Another day of celebration at The Queen’s School in Chester this week as students collected their GCSE results.
These results showcase the hard work and positive attitude of the girls who are the first cohort to sit exams as normal since 2019, with overall grades up in all areas compared to that year.

Our school had 6 people with all 9s (each taking at least 10, mostly 11 subjects), including me. 3 of us left the school bc it was a waste of money😂

      It’s fully a memory game.
Use revision method that best helps you remember (e.g. split information into smaller chunks centred around one main idea worked for me when I made mind-maps for RS).
Follow the principle of Ebbinghaus’ forgetting curve (decrease the frequency of reviewing a given topic/material over time), e.g. initially after the first time you review the content, test yourself after 5 minutes, then after 30 minutes, then 2 hours, then the next day, then in 4 days, then 2 weeks, then in a month and so on.
You will retain the majority of information for a longer period of time.
Also, prioritise studying the mark scheme first, then the content involved.
      e.g. for science papers:
      State ≠ Describe ≠ Explain
State = Usually very short word / phrase of the thing they require
Describe = just telling the situation required as it is, without reasoning why or how.
Explain = inform with reason as to how something happens
For 6-markers of comparisons, the quality of argument and evaluation is generally very important.
For 6-markers about explaining a method for an experiments, it’s about remembering every step without fail.
For Eng Lit, (Modern Literature / Shakespeare):
I personally would (and did) make quote sheets for memorisation.
I learned how I would break apart a word/phrase/language device in general, so that I can filter through any relevant quotes to find what could be useful to the point I am trying to make. I also assigned each quote to each character.
It is very important to know the chronology of the events in the literature to avoid misunderstandings.
      For poetry:
I paired off each poem to another that it can most likely be compared well with, and memorised good prominent quotes for each poem.
Then I memorised the analysis points of each quote (practise enough and you’ll know immediately what significance a word/language device has)
Practise everything weak and never stop until you build confidence.
Always test your understanding using past papers (that come with mark schemes) under TIMED CONDITIONS to built experience with exam time pressure. This management of time is especially important for essay-based exams.
Read the specification for your subject (make sure you have the right exam board). For Eng Lang/Lit it is especially important, as they will contain info on how to structure your essay answer.
If you ever need support, consult your teacher. That is the most important thing as they are the ones guiding you through your GCSE’s.
