I almost shedded a tear over the London intro. Mario and Sonic shaking hands. It just shows the good relationship between Nintendo and SEGA.

So based
2008, 2010, and 2012 have such an expressive and cinematic feel to them. It feels epic and grandiose; as a kid I'd watch the intros to the end because of that feeling. I'll give an honorable mention to 2020; they definitely brought back that cinematic feel, but some scenes felt stiff/artificial. I assume they used the in-game animations and in-game simulations instead of animating a full intro like the WII versions. It's a different approach, but you don't get the same control over expression, motion, and lighting.

2012 was the last time they cared about intros, 2016 was the last time they cared about gameplay
the ones before were definitely made before the games actual release and the newer ones are rendered in game which gives it at lower quality look

I love how Luigi and Shadow developed some kind of rivalry all thanks to the steps of Mario and Sonic being friendly rivals. We need more interaction between those two as well 💕
But yeah, this saga is my all time favorite since I'm a fan of both so much. That's why I love seeing these in a daily basis, to remind myself how gorgeous the first game was to this very point. Thanks Nintendo and Sega for collaborating in these games. I hope we get a proper game with the boys outside the Olympics 😭❤💙

I wish I could agree but I find 2010 the best personally. Partly affected by the fact it’s most nostalgic to me too but 2012 is a close second for me

I honestly prefer pre-rendered cutscenes over in-game ones. I understand that In-game cutscenes cut down on costs, but there’s no beating the beauty of hand animated cutscenes. Automated animations have simply not reached the level of expressiveness of hand animation.
Agreed. I did get inspired by those pre-rendered cutscenes to recreate the official promotional character models using modified versions of this franchise's in-game models. Most of my model releases (on Deviantart) are mainly on Yoshi (as other 3D artists did Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Sonic the Hedgehog and Bowser 3D model replicas to name a few)

@@rad2911 To be completely fair, the story mode and the 1964 Olympics more than make up for some of it.. but man I wish we had more than 3 or that they added more content through free updates or DLC

2008, 2010, and 2012 were the best, I did prefer 2010 over the other two, though.
The first 3 cinematics were fantastic.
You can definitely tell that they were wanting to relive the magic with Rio and Tokyo, but they just didn't have the budget I guess. Tokyo at least is a lot cleaner than Rio's, but it's extremely slow paced, the in-game models look plastic, scenes are super basic, and there are no music cues (it's just a repeating loop that adds instruments later).
Hopefully the next game can have an awesome pre-rendered cinematic like the classics. Maybe Nintendo Studios could do it? If it's not too early for them to work on a project after being acquired?
Still fun to watch the Rio and Tokyo ones even with the visual qualities, tbh, but yeah!

How come the trailers have such a downfall in quality, the first ones till 2012 felt so real, so beautiful to watch... If another game of this series comes out I really hope they make something good like the old ones. Not that the most recent games are BAD, but I prefer the older ones.

It’s because Games 1-3 Intros were done using CGI. That’s why they look as pretty as they do. Games’ 4-6 intros were likely all done with the in-game graphics themselves.

Olympic Winter Games was my first game of the series that I owned. It holds so many memories of mine that I’ll never forget. I did end up getting Rio 2016, and I had some good fun with that game as well. I’m not sure if they’re gonna keep going with this series and make another one at some point for this year or 2026, but I’d honestly love to see them do so. This is a super fun game series that deserves more love, assuming it doesn’t get enough.
Tokyo 2020 is the only Mario and Sonic games uses actual Sports attire instead of their default clothes. Except the girls they came pepared

If you noticed, these games usually come out a year, or a little bit over a year before the actual Olympic Games in real life, so we would have had it by now.
Hopefully they continue the franchise, and make some godly dream events, as well as fun game modes and single player stuff.
