Hahaha, loved the intro. Still in total disbelief at the finishing banner, it was obviously done with the best of intentions but there should only be one thing at a finish line of a HC: volunteers to keep riders from falling over from sheer exhaustion. Negatives aside, Jeremy is such a character and you guys are hilarious together. Great job on the victory!
14:50 as a fellow unicyclist, if I got a dollar for every "you are missing a wheel" comment I hear, I'd be rich now. We had a hillclimb at unicycle world champs this year, I managed to overtake a few guys on expensive roadbikes there, which was fun. Mt washington looks like a great race, congratulations on your win!
@@msm624 Possible, I've certainly read about it for a while. There has been a lot of discussion if someone could ever be faster up there on a unicycle than they would be on a bike, since theoretically it could be lighter, aerodynamics is a small factor at the slow speeds and the lack of gears is not much of an issue on a hillclimb. Just judging by how much more relaxed I am on a bike, I personally doubt it.
Your camaraderie is key. You have many friends and you have friends that will give you and take your shizz all day. Wonderful to have Jeremy's perspective. Chapeau!
oh man, Jeremy and Phil what a duo! You all should do a lot more content together, I love the chemistry! Hilarious! (I need a few more "!") !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.!
This was equal parts inspiring, funny, informative, and entertaining. I'm so inspired I'm going to go out and ride my own version of Mt Washington... 700 meters at 5%.
Just did this climb today for the first time. I realize the video doesn’t convey the steepness or narrowness of the road, especially that final pitch at the summit.
I miss Mt. Washington; first drove up it back in the late 90's, then vowed I'd hike up it next. Proceeded to do that about 40 times in all conditions (from nice and sunny in the summer to ice climbing in a Nor'Easter into night on Huntington Ravine in the winter). Have even sledded down the Auto Road in the middle of the night, and walked down the Auto Road after photographing the hill climb race years back (that was painful), but never rode up it. I gotta work on that.
@@GelMibson-u2y Yeah, it wasn't on purpose - got stuck for a bit on the lower (ice) pitches of O'Dells Gully and the storm (and night) moved in. The lead climber lost his snow pickets (hit a rock with his pack and dislodged them), so we had to free-climb the snow pitch (second half of the climb - first half is ice) as we had nothing to anchor the rope to....at night, with 40-60+ mph winds and snow hitting us directly. We left Harvard Cabin at 8 a.m., and returned at 12:30 a.m. the next day....all on no sleep, about half a Clif Bar and not even a full Nalgene of Gatorade for the entire outing. I think that was the most physically demanding thing I've ever done, I could barely walk by the time I got back to Harvard Cabin - I had to take a break halfway up a 5-6 foot rise in the trail I was so tired. I haven't ice climbed since. Ned Green died approx. 2 months later when he hit an ice dam while climbing in Huntington. I have a trip report on SummitPost.com which details much more of that climb.
You are a winner in life. Beautiful family. You are healthy. You are doing what you love and making a living at it. You provide entertainment to others. You are real. Not too many ex-pro athletes no matter what the sport do it so well after retirement. Go Phil and Emily!
I thoroughly enjoyed that! Big congrats Phil. Good to see Jeremy too. I used to catch his GCN videos. I lived in Boston for 15 years and bought my first road bike there. I fondly remember rides through all those beautiful little historical towns (Concord, Lexington) and doing some bike packing into New Hampshire and down to the cape. This video brought back memories....made my day.
Phil is incredible to ride this fast. He is inspirational . I try to watch all his videos. They have a great theme to them. The amount of power, wattage is very credible, love it so much. We do Mount Mitchell here in NC which is similar and wish we had Phil around to ride with us! Keep doing what your doing on this channel, it is very well done and produced. Excellent job Phil. You keep me on the bike.
Congrats Phil!!! Unbelievable effort all the way! That finish line is some kind of 5th dimension vortex, in 2019 I felt super strong the whole way and inexplicably wretched the moment my front tire hit the timing bump.
Definitely need more events with JPow. You two are brilliant together! I loved the 2 different races you rode. Great to see you win, too. This might be my favorite of your videos to date.
What a fun video - Phil and JPow together! Your laughter is contagious. Seriously amazing climbing work. And I loved how you gave a shout out to the amateurs and (their) families/ supporters. 💕
Great video! Congrats on the win, but also huge respect to Levinsohn for giving you a run for your money. Having seen him tear apart the field at local hill climbs, we here in New England knew it'd be close!
For me JPow is the OG bike youtuber with Behind the Barrier. I hope he finds time to do more bike videos, just exploring the outdoors and community. Congratulations Phil on an epic finish.
Damn you Phil, the last time I did Mt. Washington 30 years ago I swore I’d never step foot back in NH ever again. Now I’m thinking about next years race …
As briefly as I can -- an extremely fond memory from a first months PGWRE subscriber/viewer -- my best job interview ever consisted of riding in a snowcat (cool enough!) up the the auto road to the Mt. Washington summit in Jan or Feb of 1988, chatting with the folks about running their museum, and then coming back down in the snowcat...except, and I ***ing kid you not, the people riding down with me (weather scientists who'd been on the summit for 10 days straight) waited till we were out of site of the summit buildings, asked the drivers to stop, and pulled these objects strapped to the top of the snowcats off that turned out to be PLASTIC SLEDS and these people, and of course I, rode those things (two sleds each: one for your torso and one for your legs for vague steering control) all the way down that auto road to nearly the bottom. It was completely insane and dangerous and beautiful and it started to get dark and the ice tore holes in the sleds and I'm sure nobody would admit to this now and I had bruises all over my chest, belly, thighs, shins, forearms when I got back to my friends' house in Boston very late that night. So good for you both for conquering that beast and for summoning a great memory of a physically and mentally taxing event.
Just before Croatan Buck Fifty, my wife bought me a Velo Sock bike cover for my bike since we were staying in a hotel instead of an AirB&B this time and wouldn't be able to wash the race. She didn't want me rolling a muddy bike through the hotel. The thing is the hotel didn't really care but I used it as she made me promise I would.
Looks like a good time was had by all. I've got a few more pounds to lose (196lbs right now, down 30lbs so far), and if I lose them all from cycling, I'll be a much better climber once I do. I'm also building a gravel bike for climbing, because I've got to do it with some comfort on account of my blown-out back. One day I dream of doing some actual mountain climbs like this though.
I always thought the proper way to finish a ride was enjoying a beverage, and in New England, I would prefer a NEIPA. And, I am a New England cyclist, currently Northern New England, once Connecticut, and I can find a nice cool stream either north or south, as I can a good NEIPA.
After watching the part when you talked about the prohibition of taking the descent right after the event, I was thinking about doing an Everesting on that hill when taking the descent is allowed. :D
Jeremy is on the money, enjoy the scenery while suffering and absolutely creek soaks ftw! ... I kinda wanna have a couple of trolly clothes where instead of cookie cookies it Baden Cooks' melon instead. :P
Jpow and Phil is quality content. You guys need to fly to more races .
Totally agree. Jpow makes everything a little more fun
They should ride to more races 😅
It's like watching a 90's comedy 😃

Fair, but it was good content. 😉
2 gears! Stand up and sit down is gold! God tier 🥇
I have to say JPow is amazing. I really miss his content on GCN.
He was the presenter that this old man would like to share a ride and beer with!

Can confirm that finishing in 2 hours is very difficult. Though I'm pretty sure that finishing in 50 mins would be harder.
can also confirm, took me 1:55 and I was in a great deal of pain at the top
I came here to thank Phil for the shout out to the 2hr finishers. :) 1hr 58min for me.
1:54 for me, never grunted before on a bike but I was gunting up that wall.

I wonder how fast Jonas Vingegaard or Tadej Pogacar could climb Mt. Washington?
Probably 4-6min faster?
