"This is Ari Klau. He went to University of Virginia and was a D1 track and cross country athlete for 5 years. He is a new pro in triathlon, and has just moved out here for the second time in a year from a training group in New Hampshire. He has a pretty nice UA-cam channel that chronicles his development as a pro triathlete." See that wasn't so hard.
I have a feeling he asked them not to showcase him at all because he took some flak last time for “pretending” or whatever. Lionel has several videos shouting him out
Appreciate the public destruction of all self-esteem during the swim phase. (Most of us cyclists suck at swimming…but dang. Lol) Great job hanging with a clearly talented athlete in Lionel. Loved to watch this, as I live in Tucson!
I have bounced between triathlon and cycling for around 13 years and what I have always found interesting is the different culture/personality of the sports. Cycling has a slight negative slant to it...i.e. "I am not feeling good today...I have not been riding much lately" Sometimes its excuses, but its also the deceptive element of tactics that also leaves room to do black ops training so you can come out and romp on people. Triathlon is more individual, but has a different positive energy, you celebrate your competitor improvements, especially if they are slower than you. Selectively share training tips with them. You celebrate and encourage even when you get bested by people on race day, but do so with gritted teeth thinking about what you are going to do in the coming months to make sure they never best you again. Its really cool to see you hanging with Lionel. Great content and collaboration.
Well done Phil! You put a solid fight there. Been Following Lionel for some time, abs it’s fair to say the guy is super efficient, it’s just mind blowing.
Lionel has perfect posture. Phil are your psoas tight from the bike? You are leaning forward from the waist when you run. Awesome job keeping up with those aliens! This video was so great and fun to watch. More like this please!
That was super fun to watch. Some of my favorite UA-camrs! And dude .... I'm super impressed on that run. A brick run post-3-hour ride and pulling off a near 6 min/mi pace. That's some special stuff right there.
nice job phil. Those guys are creme of the crop in the triathalon world Great that you tried to keep up with them. Im sure biking you can handle it the other two are different beasts altogether. Good on your for participating. Never easy thats for sure.
That was a great video, way to hung in there during the run and the swim. I’m with Lionel on this you could do a triathlon if you want it to, you are pretty fast and a great athlete.
That was great! Big fan of both Lionel and you, so thanks for the highly entertaining video. And for what it’s worth, your swim is better than my golf.
I Love and support this! Phil you asked for tips on your running form. Right off the bat I see it would be better for you to stay tall like a tree(actively pull your head upwards),keep your hips underneath you driving them forward, finally lean or fall into it while implementing those last 2 cues.
Best video in a while! Enjoyed the high quality camera shots, different perspectives (not just a vlog style self shot), good editing with graphics. More videos like this please.
I'm still recovering from back surgery and foot drop... I will get back on my bike first! I will have to learn to dismount to the left as my right foot is now kinda lame.
Great content, great vibe. Amazing to see the high cadence of Phil vs Lionel and the hearth rate. Would had be fun to see the same comparison on the run, maybe not on the swim :). More Cookie Monster sticker
Phil, Australia has a mixture of climates and terrain, but more importantly free healthcare. I don’t know why anyone would live in a country which can bankrupt you so that you can have health care.
Phil, As an over-the-hill, back-of-the-pack, age-group triathlete, I am seriously impressed! While riding a road bike, you were able to keep up with Lionel Sanders on a triathlon bike. Without any serious run training, you were able to run a mile in 6:06. Your dog-paddle swim looked unimpressive, but it still was about as fast as many age-groupers. You definitely have the engine to be a pro triathlete.
Phil you could absolutely be a swimmer with some practice! You've got a swimmers frame and you've got the basics down, just need to fine tune and learn proper breathing technique. Don't be fooled by how tiring it felt, that's normal in the beginning - it takes time but once you get swim fit and dial in the technique you'll find an easy long swim feels as effortless as an easy ride! Would be epic to see you do a Tri one day. Great video!
Great video. As a competitive swimmer, I will say it's always the same with (non-pro) triathletes: lots of people can run well and cycle well, not many can swim well. Swimming is the great leveler in tri.
Nice! Good job in the run mate. That gait when you tapped out of the jog, oh so familiar! I knows it well. If you want to feel an intriguingly different 'have to stop' moment in your legs, give a beep test a crack sometime. 😉 The swim is easy once one has some shoulders conditioning for 30-60min of flailing. Once you're pulling yourself along at enough pace so the glutes rise to the surface it's all just a calm exhaling rhythm thing, not unlike jogging, and in that the face down with side breathing becomes second nature. ...should you want to at some point.
I did a mini-tri my first year in college and was shocked at how hard the swimming segment was. We did 1 mile in the pool and I was very quickly gassed despite being in the best shape of my life. I won the tri in my age group though because of the bike segment.
Very interesting to see the differences in running and biking form. On the bike, Phil has a way higher (more natural) cadence, while on the run, Lionel and Ari run way more efficient and effortless with Phil having a hard time to keep his upper body in check.
If he can hold this pace until the end then, yes! Hahaha poor phil. I'm upset Phil didn't wear a Speedo. If I had 200k to put up to watch Phil try an iron man you best believe I'd do it 😂 he must be mic'd up the entire time
The look you had on your face when you saw Lionel without a shirt was hilarious. And I’m sorry to say, but your running form needs LOTS of work. But that was a very impressive 6:06💪
I've ridden with guys that do Duathlons and triathlons and they are very fit. Where I see some fall away is in the hills when riding with guys that just bike. I put that down to a larger weight from more muscle mass and perhaps less focus on non flats or steeper gradients which has a rider developing different muscles out of the saddle more.
Let’s not forget Phil was participating in a ‘sport’ that requires you to do two things that you should only have to do if your life is in danger, or the cops are chasing you, and that’s run and swim. I suspect both Phil and I would be either dead or in cuffs. Lol
"I have limits. The no limits is his thing" I laughed and smiled for all of this video! :D
Being willing to humble himself this much shows just how bad-ass Phil actually is. What a great video

See that wasn't so hard.
Thanks for this.
Thought so too. I mean come on. He is actually all day long with them, but he wasn’t worth a single second in this video. Jesus :(
I have a feeling he asked them not to showcase him at all because he took some flak last time for “pretending” or whatever. Lionel has several videos shouting him out
For real. Come on Phil. Good video and colab but you have to introduce Ari right?
Beat me to it.
I love that you took it easy on those guys on the track and in the water Phil. Ari is such a slouch when it comes to track work.
"I don't really know how to swim at all, I know how to not drown." I feel that.
Running a 6:06 mile is no joke! You did amazing!
Gotta give you credit… hanging at that run pace with those boys for as long as you did with zero training is quite impressive! Great job 👏
And the fact the Lionel is on drugs.
I like all of your vids Phil, but this one was truly great. You should do more collabs with other athletes!
like shaq versus, but Cookie monster versus! so many possibilities, mtb, cross, hill, descents, ....
Please do more collaborations like this! Great video!
Just LOVED how casual this was. Just felt like I was there and part of the conversation. Thanks guys, lovely video😃
Very cool. Triathlon - Don’t Drown, Don’t Crash, Don’t Trip.
Now we gotta get Lionel + Ari out to LA to shred some canyons, that'd be awesome!
Appreciate the public destruction of all self-esteem during the swim phase. (Most of us cyclists suck at swimming…but dang. Lol) Great job hanging with a clearly talented athlete in Lionel. Loved to watch this, as I live in Tucson!

why would you post such a long boring and negative comment to a fun video collaboration between a cyclist and a triathlete?
That is actually so true! When I was a cyclist I 'never trained enough'. Now with tri I train too much! 😜
Well done Phil! You put a solid fight there. Been Following Lionel for some time, abs it’s fair to say the guy is super efficient, it’s just mind blowing.
I feel like Lionel is pure power and muscle and striving more and more towards efficiency...nonetheless he is mind blowing in both categories
This was awesome. I want to see more of this!
The Rose Bowl sprint triathlon is in March, you should sign up and just see how you'd place
Rolling with Lionel for a day is no easy feat. That man in offseason/out of shape mode puts the rest of us to shame, when he's fit he's fucking tough.
Fun fact: "Brick" training is just short for "Bricolage" which is French for something built up from various elements.
Your swimming style is "not drowning", very similar to mine "delayed drowning", I hope to one day progress to "not drowning". Great video as always.
Lionel has perfect posture. Phil are your psoas tight from the bike? You are leaning forward from the waist when you run. Awesome job keeping up with those aliens! This video was so great and fun to watch. More like this please!
I noticed the same thing. He runs a little hunched over
I think he also lacks core strength, and those heavy looking shoes does not help
Lionel is actually fairly infamous for having relatively poor running form for a pro triathlete. His run looks like a horse gallop at times.
His pro athlete engine helped him keep up. At the end, his body isn’t tuned for that motion. Gonna lose energy in different muscles pretty quickly
@@Emiljon Good posture, but awful form. But he puts down some fast laps...
That was super fun to watch. Some of my favorite UA-camrs! And dude .... I'm super impressed on that run. A brick run post-3-hour ride and pulling off a near 6 min/mi pace. That's some special stuff right there.

Great Fun! Thanks to Lionel, Ari, Phil - and Talbot!
Love those Jukebox Kits great looking. Thanks you two for getting me through first 30minutes on the trainer today
That was a great video, way to hung in there during the run and the swim. I’m with Lionel on this you could do a triathlon if you want it to, you are pretty fast and a great athlete.
Way to have fun Phil. Great job and we need more like this in the world of covid and narratives. Have a great 2022 and thanks for being you
Been waiting for this since I saw your strava posts last week!
Lionel looking like Jan Ullrich with that cadence.
So very interesting seeing an endurance athlete with minimal running training take on this challenge. Legit think he did very well! Good stuff, Phil.
This is awesome, you are an aerobic beast but it still surprising to see you sit up with Lionel doing a key session. Great videos!
The professionalism of these videos is way up!
That was great! Big fan of both Lionel and you, so thanks for the highly entertaining video. And for what it’s worth, your swim is better than my golf.
You improved to intro so much, really great quality, happy to see you thriving Phil
I really enjoyed that, especially seeing you guys riding in the sun. Its quite a mild -3 degrees here in grey Poland, or for you guys (26.6 F)
Hey, i like your national plag
Biggest difference on the bike I keep noticing ist Phil's high cadence even when he's chillin on the bike.....crazy
You mean his normal cadence.
I Love and support this!
Phil you asked for tips on your running form. Right off the bat I see it would be better for you to stay tall like a tree(actively pull your head upwards),keep your hips underneath you driving them forward, finally lean or fall into it while implementing those last 2 cues.
You're a great sport Phil! Great video! And honestly, great work on the run.
Best video in a while! Enjoyed the high quality camera shots, different perspectives (not just a vlog style self shot), good editing with graphics. More videos like this please.
This video was super fun to watch. Thanks Phil for putting yourself out there for your fans!
Epic video! One of my favorites!
I'm still recovering from back surgery and foot drop... I will get back on my bike first!
I will have to learn to dismount to the left as my right foot is now kinda lame.
That takes balls. Way to go Phil!
this video makes me realize how rad phil is for putting himself out there and how comparatively cocky lionel seems.
Super impressed Lionel learned how to use his espresso machine 🤣
i dont know if he has... i think thats (one reason) why he recruited Ari ;)
Great content, great vibe. Amazing to see the high cadence of Phil vs Lionel and the hearth rate. Would had be fun to see the same comparison on the run, maybe not on the swim :). More Cookie Monster sticker
Im watching Phil’s arms catch on fire during that run!! MERCY!
Phil, Australia has a mixture of climates and terrain, but more importantly free healthcare. I don’t know why anyone would live in a country which can bankrupt you so that you can have health care.
awesome video Phil, the running was amazing for you to be able to keep up for an hour!
Great editing on the intro!

Just such great content. Sport crossovers and two great athletes. Love it.
KoM segment idea = Hincapies favorite climb, Skyuka Mt in Columbus Nc
That was Awesome! Not many people would put themselves through that in such unfamiliar territory.
This was a super cool video Phil!

Nice run Phil! Impressive!
Great video. You really put your self out there. Chapeau.
Legend for going way outside your comfort zone and trying swim/run :)
Great running also!!
Wow!! The production is amazing 😊
Phil-“ ..ok boys, follow me up this 25% gradient for 7 miles”
I am here for this. Please do a No Kid Hungry - NO LIMITS - Cookie 70.3 race in Tucson. We will all be there.
Phil is in great shape, but Lionel is next level, not just physically but mentally.
Druuuugs are a magical thing
@@mattk8810 how do you know that?
Besides, especially cyclists don't have the reputation to be clean... Just saying
What's a brick? Phil swimming.
That was awesome fun. Thank you.

Great 360 camera pan at 7.23. Bravo.
Great Job Phil.......I love your attitude to try.........Lets try a triathlon race next
Hey Phil! This video was fun. Great stuff!
I only run if my life is in danger and I don’t even know how to swim, so in my mind, you’re a phenomenal triathlete, Phil! 🤣 Well done!
I did a relay triathlon (bike leg) and it was a really nice experience, the rank and file triathletes are really nice people.
Nice! Good job in the run mate.
That gait when you tapped out of the jog, oh so familiar! I knows it well.

Holy 💩 Phil. Impressive run! Congrats.
Great music during the swim! Very cinematic!
Great video infairness!! Different from the norm 👌🏻

Nice espresso set up. My brother has the exact same setup (grinder and machine)

Maybe a duathlon in the future, once you're done with the KOM slaughter. You could definitely get good at running fairly quickly.
Dang man! 6:22 and 6:06 miles!! That is seriously impressive.
Running is for the beasts of the earth we machinists will carry our joint health all the way through oldage
It's wild to see you riding where I ride..
This is so awesome. Nice one
Anyone here remember Ari from The Athlete Special vlogs? Endurance sports are a small world I guess haha!

Best video yet
Ari needs a shout out here filming from the bike and blowing the wind in the run.
Great job, Phil^^
Shout to Ari- good to see him in the video as well.
LS, “no limits baby”
PG, “I have limits!!”
Dude, I'm impressed. Swimming is the hardest and obviously you don't swim. I think the running was the most impressive!
Best video in quite a while. More like this…..lots of good options of similar with other pro athletes
Impressive, Phil! Lionel is the real deal.
