Back in my early sixties I took up sailing with the goal of sailing solo from Canada to Greece when pensioned off. I learned to sail and sailed the Great Lakes for a few years always remembering Melville's quote, that a Great Lakes sailor has nothing to be ashamed of in comparison to an ocean sailor. Unfortunately, I never realized my dream, but at least I have my memories of sunsets on Huron and a couple of tornadoes on Erie. I am in my eighties now, sold my boat a few years ago, but I still am young at heart thanks to my sailing years. It was a great pleasure "sailing" with you to Horta. May you always have the good winds and my God be with you on the waters................

great videos Sam. years ago when i was sailing with my dad, he found a neat invention to "calm" a boat down at anchor. we'd anchored at Catalina Island off of California and the surge rocked the boat pretty hard. so before the next time we went, he rigged up a couple of car oil catch pans with some lead weights, drilled a few holes around the sides and rigged them together with medium sized line. he tied the boom off at 90 degree angle to the mast and suspended the two rigged oil pans off the end of the boom. the drag from the oil pans acted as a brake when the swells rocked the boat. the thing smoothed out the motion of the boat and made for a really comfortable nights sleep.

I really enjoyed this and part 1. I’ve never sailed across 'the pond' but it did seem to be giving a pretty good impression of the problems and day to day experience. Top notch UA-cam content. 10 outta 10
14:00 it’s a baby dorado. That part you threw overboard, makes a good soup.!!!
We Antilleans like the soup more than all the meat. The stomach of the bigger dorados we put on vinager and let it sit for a week. Yummie.!!!!
@4:51 Looks like the 262-foot Winch-designed 'Excellence' superyacht? With the piercing reverse bow (that mimics the beak of an American eagle). The vessel takes its design inspiration from Phillip Starcks's 'Motor Yacht A'. 'Excellence' is owned by American automobile magnate Herb Chambers.
I can imagine the frustration of sailing into high pressure and zero winds and finally reaching the destination to find you have to stay afloat for a few more days due to silly red tape. What a great find this channel was.
Wow, sailing with dolphins is such a privilege!
Imagine sailing through the ink black night, middle of the Atlantic and you hear Sams music drifting over the waves 🥰
You are my soul brother, your ingenuity rigging those fishing lines were awesome, I grew up fishing and boating just never got into sailing. This is the most unique experience you can have, back to the olden days. Love it. Glad you caught a bonita/false albacore and a mahi mahi.
Dude is a modern day, true-to-life renaissance man. Can play many instruments like no other; catches, skins, cooks and eats his own fish; and braves the depths of the open ocean all by himself. A genuine idol for all men.
Meh I'd rather be good looking
@@petergianakopoulos4926 looking good and having fun is 2 different things, i like to dress fancy, on any occasion, i wear a watch, you know, but when i wanna have fun, idc what i will go through, even if i had to 💩 in a bucket lol, trying something unusual and new is better than going through the same routine.
@@petergianakopoulos4926 good luck with that.
@@joshuapatrick682 I don't believe in luck..losers do
Thanks
Awesomeness!
Thanks Mom!
@@samholmessailing Happy belated birthday Sam! Also, you may want to read into parasites from Atlantic fish. Tuna aren't so susceptible, but other kinds of fish you may want to make sure you cook. Wish you the best!
I actually cheered when you caught that fish
If you don't mind me asking what held you back? age?
I ask because I'm 40yo with a bit of a bad back and worried I won't be able to do it at 50yo
Crossing the Atlantic and catch and cook, couldn’t get better
Airbus on board: Likely some parts of the European space program on their way to their launch site in French Guyana. Nice find, Sam!
And keep your sailing adventures coming, watching them is a great way to fight my increasing wanderlust.
Thanks!
Your positivity is inspirational
your a cool guy, I enjoy your videos. I really fell for you when I realised your a musician, nice one man!
"A fish is basically a vegetable." Ron Swanson. Amazing trip and footage!
rubbish. name a veg that bleeds.
@@7494jon you might have missed the joke.
Talk about someone living the dream; my hats off to you Sam!!
great videos Sam. years ago when i was sailing with my dad, he found a neat invention to "calm" a boat down at anchor. we'd anchored at Catalina Island off of California and the surge rocked the boat pretty hard. so before the next time we went, he rigged up a couple of car oil catch pans with some lead weights, drilled a few holes around the sides and rigged them together with medium sized line. he tied the boom off at 90 degree angle to the mast and suspended the two rigged oil pans off the end of the boom. the drag from the oil pans acted as a brake when the swells rocked the boat. the thing smoothed out the motion of the boat and made for a really comfortable nights sleep.
Did sail in 26 seafarer sailboat before med school brings back memories. Now have 50 ft beneteau and explore locally
Attitude is important. This fella has a great one 👍
This has been the best of youtube …. Best of all time. Just a fact
Even when he’s frowning, he is smiling
It's amazing how calm the ocean gets.
The doldrums are a trip. People have disagreed with me but I think the Atlantic is the worst. It gets so windless.
The water at the beginning was soo smooth, I have never seen it like that in the middle of the Atlantic!
Just started watching your vids and totally enamoured with them. Respect for your wealth of knowledge, musical talent and quiet, pretentious style. If i can find some Ill def send dom coin our way. Just on the struggle bus right now but at least I find calm and joy with your shared experiences. Thank you!
I am really getting hungry watching you cook up and eat the fresh fish. Enjoy.
At 4:50 that looks like a super yacht. Happy birthday and thanks for another great video. And I like how you film at night, not many sailing channels do that.
I sailed up from Cuba to Bermuda and on to the UK in 2010. One of my memories of the sail to Bermuda is the man of war’s on the surface. I assumed it was a one off because they went on for days! Brought it all back for me!
Great video, very exciting watching your journey to the Azores. Wow, love it.
I luvit, I wish to have this sort of adventure b4 i die. In my beautiful zeplin ha ,just a tip Blue bottles on top of the water, jelly blubbers under the water, they are not a fish ,they catch fish and other prey ,thankyou ive learnt alot watching you sale a sailboat...sketch
Thanks for sharing this. I must have been a sailor in a past life because I love boating and sailing videos but I get terribly sea sick... I do however get to sail the world over with videos like this and get to experience in a small way your journey. Namaste'.
Bring some real paper back books, man! the tangibility of them while out in the ocean on a boat is so great compared to kindle imo
💯 Never rely solely on digital entertainment on long sailing passages. Major DERP on that front, mit to mention on the underestimated food preparations.
I don’t think he was really running low on food, looked like there was plenty when he pulled all the cans out. I think the complaint was more that he was running low on favorite foods, had no candy left etc
He did. They’re in the previous vids for this trip. One was about the dude who was at sea for 70 days (great story!!) and the other was a sailing book from an author who did a series (I don’t recall other details).
@@reednj01 correct. He said he was low on his “good food”. Fresh fruits, veggies, meats etc.
A kindle is great for storing a BOATLOAD of books in a very small amount of space.. also probably pretty hard to buy specific books in places like Bermuda and Azores. But yea, so much more satisfying to read a physical copy
This was more entertaining than a 3 hour movie.
not really
I love the way you rig fishing lines.... You're in the horse latitudes
Fresh fish is one of the most delicious things in this world. My mouth watered when you showed the fish cooking.
Sam, you are an inspiration to healthy experienced sailors or sailor wannabe’s or those who have similar health issues. I’m also impressed with the creativity on your small sailboat. Keep up your spirits and smooth sailing. Bob
Wow that first shot looked like straight out of a movie. Your videos keep getting better and better Sam. Keep it up!!
