  • After waiting out bad weather in the Dry Tortugas we sail back to Key West. I drop off Zoe and set out alone offshore for a 7 day passage up the Gulf Stream. When the wind turns against the stream, the waves get big! Eventually I make landfall in Southport North Carolina.

Thomas, I'm in the same "boat". Father (39) of two (6 yr old girl, 9 yr old boy) and the wife has a fear of the ocean. I want to retire and sail the world, but she is supportive once the kids are out of the best and we have finances in order. I hope you can live your dream, even if it's later than you wanted.

@Fred Flintstone that's good advice! Sam also prefers dealing with smaller vessels overall. The bigger the boat, the less likely you'll have time to sail it because you're always fixing stuff. Unfortunately, we didnt have a sailboat when Sam was a kid but we did send him to sailing day camp for a couple summers. We had kayaks which is another easy, inexpensive way get your kids on the water.

Those SpaceX boats are Go Ms Chief and Go Ms Tree. Meant for catching the nose fairings (payload coverings) of their Falcon 9 rockets as they parachute down from a launch. There are two fairings on their rockets so they sent two boats; One for each fairing. The fairings are worth a couple million each so it's definitely worth trying to catch and reuse them. Mr. Steven was the original fairing catcher out of Los Angeles until the original company went bankrupt so SpaceX bought them out and moved them to the East coast where more launches occur.

We learned from having an on-board for over a decade... don't have an inboard. We sold that sailboat and bought one that was 2' shorter with an OUTBOARD motor on the back. It's much easier to work on and honestly everything else, too! We were always fighting the inboard... always fixing something, replacing this, doing that. It got annoying. No more! The outboard is such a better option, and you get more room on the boat! Win win!

I had the leaking hatch beams on my Cape Dory 30 Ketch, very irritating for 8 years.. I took off the "Turtle" (hood with all the screws) covering the sliding hatch. The water comes from the two opening channels and seeps between the fiberglass and the beams, whether hatch is closed and with boards in won't help. Old silicone had separated. Tried putty, new silicone, didn't help. I finally let 5 minute epoxy to flow in the crack on sides of the beams. Been dry ever since. Since I had a mizzen mast stopped the sliding hatch for complete removal. I had to cut the forward and hidden part of the hatch (the beam is the stop) then re-glass the piece and make strong enough.

During our first day at sea, we took the bridge tour with a group of people, and while the guide was talking about something, we separated from the group and I sidled up to the watch officer standing by the chart table. I
I tapped my finger on the-then Defense Mapping Agency Hydrographic-Topgraphic logo on chart to get the officer's attention, and said to him "I work at this agency. I help make your charts." That got his full attention, and he proceeded to give us a very nice tour of the bridge, professional-courtesy style, all the while still keeping with his bridge duties, of course.
The pointed one instrument out as the fathometer, and then added, "But it's not reading right now because we're beyond its maximum depth." I naively asked, "How deep does it read, then?", and he responded "Ten thousand feet of water." I literally gulped, like in the movies, and thanked him for his time, and we left.
Later we went up on deck and looked at the water. It was the deepest darkest blue I had ever seen -- almost black. We looked at it in silence for a moment, and then my wife said, "Now you know where they got 'navy blue' from."

Hello Sam ! I'm enjoying your sailing videos , you really are a good sailor ! I like the idea of those floating white mooring balls , you don't have to worry about getting your anchor stuck ! Are they available all over the world ? Your new boat is way cool , especially the inside ! Be careful and safe ! Next time when your in Key West try a Conch Fritter for me , I always wanted one ! Thanks for the videos !

You sir are living my dream. When I finally decide to throw in the towel at work, I'm going to learn as much as I can about navigating the seas, and then I'm going to buy a boat and sail off! Thanks for posting your adventures brother.

If you make it to Canada, check out sailing up the Saint John river. I grew up there and many people say it's a beautiful place to sail. I actually saw it in a yachting magazine once. I know an old sailor there as well. Interesting guy to sail and drink beers with.

Just discovered your channel and I am really impressed with your skills and amazing positive attitude. Now I’ll have to go back and watch them all. One day I hope to get some sailing adventures in if I can just get retired. Maybe not as hard core like this was though. Man that looked scary out there!

Love this, a big plus is your boat----- reasonable for middle class me, I can completely relate. . Towing a dink bad idea on that passage, good you sold. Those arm type autopilots don't hold up when batteries get low.

That gulf stream is your friend when headed north!
It's interesting trolling out there for blue marlin. Even if you're heading is south you're going north on the gps.
Best fishing on the planet out there off Boca Raton.

6:52 "Break stuff, break stuff, break stuff." So polite. I would have used more earthy language! (Off camera. I'm sure you must do.) Great footage and viewing, as always, and thanks. Let's hope you fix that annoying leak.

When you 1st approach/enter the gulf stream you can actually see the top water moving differently. Pretty amazing sight. Makes power drifting way more difficult.

A thicker wire will carry higher amperage with less voltage drop. Think of it like a hose. Voltage is the pressure that pushes water (electricity) through the hose (wire) and amperage is the volume that can go through. A thin hose is restrictive, a wider hose less restrictive.
