As a dry skin, acne prone individual, I agree this topic isn't discussed enough because people generally associate acne with oiliness. The best ingredient I have used by far to control my acne has been azelaic acid. It's a powerful ingredient for acne prone dry skin individuals since it is a naturally occurring acid on the skin and less irritating than benzoyl peroxide

I have dry skin, hormonal acne. Never use fragrance or alcohol in my skincare. All of a sudden turned 21 and have stubborn hormonal acne. Nothing seems to clear it except when I was on prescription Duac. But you can’t use it longer than 3 months because of the antibiotics. Azelaic acid helped but nothing actually cleared it.
Now trying Differin cream through prescription on Boots Online Acne Clinic. I’m 1 month in and got 5 more months to go to see if it’s working or not (using it the Dr Dray way).
Trying to be patient but really feeling like it’ll always be like this.

If you’re like me and really struggle with products burning your skin, here’s my routine that has really turned my skin around in a few months. (inspired by both dr v and dr dray)
    Morning:
-rinse with Luke warm water only.
    -apply niacinamide to dry skin
    -apply vanicream moisturizing cream
    -sunscreen sunscreen sunscreen
    Night-
-Wash with cerave sa cleanser, pat dry
    - apply alpha Arbutin all over
-apply azelaic acid to problem spots
    -apply vanicream moisturizing cream
-follow up with occlusive like Vaseline, cera be ointment or vanicream ointment (currently vanicream)
I also switched my toothpaste to a fragrance free toothpaste as I notice some burning around my mouth when brushing. I’ve been doing this routine for about 3 months and my skin has completely turned around. No more dry flaky spots, no red irritation, hyperpigmentation is slowly fading, no more big angry pimples. I definitely recommend if you’re struggling with any of those things.
Edited to add; I don’t apply to completely bone dry skin, but patted dry with a clean towel.

I’ve been doing a similar morning routine for like 3 weeks water, niancinamide (I added caffeine 5% for under my eyes and a somewhat dark sport nearmy eye area), nmf, cerave moisturizer and sunscreen and it works fabulous! I woke up today to the most amazing skin (without steroids) I’ve ever had, so if you have irritated skin this routine is incredible!!!
Question, why you decided for vanicream instead of cerave moisturizer??

all of those products should be applied to damp skin... you want to trap that water in which will help with dehydration. and if you use any humectants, you def want to apply them on damp skin and top it with moisturizer right away - as humectants can pull water out of your skin and make it dryer (through TEWL).

Dropping a comment to say that this video is a godsend. My skin has changed in the past few years and I think it's mostly dehydration -- I'm over producing oil in a way that I never had before and it's causing breakouts in a way I've never experienced. I'm totally fed up, so I'm going to try overhauling my skincare routine with this guidance, and if that doesn't work then I'll attempt to find a dermatologist that understands skin of color. Wish me luck!

I tried using Niacinamide and Bakuchiol under my mineral sunscreen, which turned out to be a complete disaster. This combination dried and irritated me so much that I had to discontinue using all three products. In theory, all the three should work on dry/sensitive skin, but not on mine. Tough luck.
    Here is the disaster routine:
    1. Good Morning Low pH gel cleanser
    2. Purito unscented serum(5% Niacinamide)
    3. The Inkey list bakuchiol cream
    4. Purito comfy water mineral sunscreen
Now I am slowly recovering from the disaster with Mizon's snail gel.

I just want to say thank you so much for making this video.
I purchased Kiehls midnight recovery serum a week or so ago and looked at the ingredients and became apprehensive to try it on my skin because my skin has been very irritated lately I didn’t want to risk adding anything else to the mix.
So I went on YT and looked up reviews of the product and your channel popped up.
As a person of color, I was immediately hooked and was so happy to have found this video on dry acne prone skin because that’s what I’m experiencing at the moment.
I purchased the simple gel cleanser, Cerave SA cleanser, Paulas choice HA and advanced repair toner, the cerave moisturizer, and the drunk elephant protoni. I started using them and immediately noticed a difference. It’s only been a few days but my skin doesn’t feel as tight and dry as it did previously.
Also, so far I’ve had zero reactions to any of the products she recommended. Which is a first I’m very fortunate for.
Again it’s only been a few days since I started this new routine but I’m excited to see the ongoing results. Thanks again!
    *Update* : 12/19/21
    - The drunk elephant protini is not very hydrating at all for my winter skincare routine alone. Would not recommend using as your sole moisturizer if you live in a very cold/dry environment during the winter. I purchased the full size bottle so until it runs out, I’ve just been layering it.
-Cerave SA: only can use a few times a week or else it irritates my skin.
*My adjusted winter morning routine* :
    1: Simple Gel Cleanser
2: Paulas Choice advance repair toner
    3: drunk elephant protini
    4: Cerave Moisturizing Cream
    5: SPF
    *adjusted winter night routine*
    1: simple gel cleanser
    2: Paulas Choice HA toner
    3: Paulas Choice replenishing toner
    4: Drunk Elephant Protini
    5: Cerave Moisturizing Cream

So I think the reason for this is because I was using stronger actives in my skin care routine prior to switching it to the one in this video (epiduo - which contains adapalene, and LRP effacular duo). So I think I started breaking out because I discontinued use of these products - not because of the products in this routine.
If you find your skin is not getting better with this routine you probably need something stronger like I did. I'd say consider talking to a derm, starting on a Retinol and/or get the LRP effacular duo because they were the only things that really helped my skin. Back to my old routine now (minus products with fragrance, using the SA cerave cleanser and moisturizer recommended in this vid) and my skin is doing much better. Still wish i never started this routine tbh because I have a lot of Hyperpigmentation from breaking out whilst on it, but we move.

I used essential oil literally mixed it with my moisturizer a few years ago just because I read it somewhere that it's beneficial for dry skin... I got contact dermatitis in the inner corner of my eyes and outer corner of my mouth...
The black marks haven't faded yet, it's been more than 3 years... though the skin is healed I guess...it does sting when I use products with fragrance...
So my message is PLEASE DO NOT USE PRODUCTS WITH FRAGRANCE, ESSENTIAL OILS etc...

I'm getting extreme acnes and I'm not sure about my skin type and skincare to follow. My t-zone is extremely oily in summers but in winters it turns dry and flaky after washing and when I apply any moisturizer be it an aloe vera gel moisturizer, the t-zone again becomes oily after few hours. Sometimes it's too dry and too oily the other time.

I have the same problem. Also there are so many different types of acne it’s actually very confusing.. I am going to change my skin care products completely and am happy I found this video... but now I am confused if my skin is dry or dehydrated lol! Like yours, mine gets oily if I moisturise it... if I use products for oily skin then it becomes dry and flaky .
What’s your skin care routine? What products do you use ?

    • @CM-ji9hv
      @CM-ji9hv 3 роки тому

Sulfur works similarly to benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. But unlike those other acne fighting ingredients, sulfur tends to be gentler on your skin. So sulfur mask should be fine just make sure to use only 2 to 3 times a week to avoid it from drying out your skin.
