In this after effects tutorial, I use a simple & quick method to create this shape morph animation & transition that you can apply to any shapes. This tutorial is suitable for beginners - intermediate users. Please leave a comment if you'd like me to explain anything I skimmed over.

Thanks for posting! I'm finally starting to grasp follow-through, but I do have one question: will you ever do a tutorial on more complex shape morphs with follow-through? I'm practicing with two different vectors, but something doesn't feel right in my technique.
This can be done all in 1 layer if you copy paste the path of the square into the triangle keyframe area. Then you only need to tweak the mid-morph shape to your liking.

Hi Ben, could you help me with some problems that i´m having?
I make a key in the initial Path and on the end of the same path. When I change the inital path to make the transformation, the Shape layer spoil (big to small) and it doesn't go to the correct position

Really excited by this tutorial, but I got stuck immediately when setting up the first four keyframes. Instead of the triangle slowly moving to the left and then dashing over to the right, my triangle slowly moves left, but then slowly moves right a bit before dashing to the right which looks rubbish. No idea what's going wrong but it looks different to your screen and that stopped me in my tracks. Any help would be much appreciated!

Update: Figured it out, you want to right click on the 2nd and 3rd keyframes, choose "Keyframe Interpolation", and then in the menu that comes up change the Spatial Interpolation to "Linear" (for me it was previously Auto-Bezier, which generates curves to smooth out the keyframes you set, which causes that extra slow movement before and after)

Hey great tutorial, I just have one question.. When I add the keyframe and edit the path of the triangle like you did at 4:32 in this video, in my animation triangle gets smaller before it reaches that keyframe, and than just appears like that edited shape. I'm trying to understand why my shape get's smaller.

@@mohameddaamouche8442 Hey, guys on AE subreddit told me that this is a well known AE bug...
But I've found that if you just draw a triangle with the pen tool everything works fine, so I hope that helps.

... wait a minute, you can just right click separate dimensions, instead of opening up the graph editor!?!? :O
Here's what I learnt from this tutorial:
right click on position can seperate the dimension ( and there are other functions hidden there )
using search bar in comp is a good way to find the function you need and reduce a lot of time clicking each sub-functions
the easiest transformation is to move super fast between two shapes, so fast that our eyes cant follow
right click on something not editable and converting it to bezier path so you can set key frames on it.
I was stuck on not able to edit the shapes created by shape tool for a long time.

I'm stuck. when I convert to bezier path and then change the next keyframe (move or change some vertex of the shape), the animation suddenly shrink down then get back. I didn't keyframe the scale property, how come? thanks！

Hmm, maybe the points are having to move through the center of the shape to get through the other side. If you animate the path very slightly does the same thing happen?
@@BenMarriott as for me it happens even if i move one point of square even a little, the object is getting smaller to 0% (it does not change anything in size option) then its changing to what i have vhanged, there is like no animation of any movement, instead the object is just dissapearing and then comming back with new shape. Its kinda complicated how it works, wanted to record that and send to ya' but i need to remake my sub ^^
@@BenMarriott I fixed it by switching to AE 2019 :), seems like software bugs... but I still don understand why AE 2018 which is the same as yours has this weird problem

Hi Bro! Thank you for the tutorial! Though I am having some issue with the shape layer. When I convert the shape layer to bezier path and add keyframes to change the shape, when I preview it, the in between animation doesn't morph, the shape layer becomes small and disappear and will only appear on the next keyframe.
Oh that's bizarre. A few people have had the same thing happen. If the paths are changing through the center, like they're flipping from one keyframe to another that might happen. if you drag the keyframes really far apart you might be able to see better what's happening in between. Does it still behave like that when the animation between them is really subtle?

Ben, i have a problem, although i don't even know how to explain what's happening. I'm trying to edit the graph like in 2:20, but i can only move the bezier handles on an horizontal plane, not on vertical, if that makes sense. I tried enabling separate dimensionsand it still didn't work.
Ahhh, are you editing in the speed graph or value graph editor?
Hmm, i didn't even knew there were these two, hahaha. I just click the "graph editor" button near the timeline needle, you know?
I just checked here on AE and it seems to be the speed graph. The value graph looks more like what you show here, but my bezier handles don't appear, for some reason.

This video was very epic! Out of curiosity why didn’t (and maybe never) add any motion blur to this type of animation?
Motion blur is for noobs... Professional artist mostly Never use Motion blur.. check BUCK studio or CUB studio Mograph work.. you will grasp what I am trying to say !
I tend to work in styles that have clean edges in their design and having motion blur means that the design language is broken for many of the frames where an object is in motion. For VFX or 3D work, it's great. I really like to use smears instead of motion blur :)

great tutorial but I'm experiencing a problem. whenever I use the pen tool to distort the path it causes the shape to shrink. So the triangle will Strat off at the set size but as it distorts and morphs into the square, the size between get smaller so the morph looks wrong... Can u help with that?

I just come up with another way to make this kind of shape changing animation.
1. Use Ai to create two shapes
2. Use blend tool to create the inbetweens
3. Expand the shapes
4. seperate each shapes into different layers, rename them sequentially
5. import the Ai file into AE as a comp
I have watched so many shape morphing tutorials, but this one is a gem. 100% solve my problem. hat off. salute.

Unfortunately I can't hide the transition on a switch frame, since they all have to be centered hero elements. It's like I have to be an actual animator or something, lol.

At 4:32, I converted the path of triangle to bezier path. Can you please enlighten me on why my triangle actually shrinks from 01:11 to 01:14 (timing in your ae file) when I adjust the vertex for the keyframe at 01:14? I have checked your project file and realised that the triangle is not supposed to shrink but I can't seem to figure out where I went wrong in my project.

I must be doing something wrong but I don't know what... my triangle goes super small and then big again just before switching to the square!? And then the same happens to the square, it goes small and then big again before stopping. I started the whole thing from scratch and the same happened again 😭
Guys, i have a problem. When I animate my path, it doesn't shape, but it changes size (it is smaller). What do you think about that?

Hey Ben! thanks for the Tutorial, i know you mentioned that this method is more versatile, but have you tried copying the shape Path keyframe from the square and pasting it after the triangle path keyframe , then from the Mask and shape path menu use the "set first vertex" for smoother transitions.
Thank so much! That's another great method, sometimes it creates some funky inbetween poses, but if the shapes are similar enough it can work great

Couldn't you just create a normal shape and then mask it with a triangle mask and then just keyframe the mask path?

Thanks so much! That's a great method for some scenarios. Depending on the shapes you can get some really funky stuff happening in the inbetweens, this method means I have complete control over that. :)

I laughed and said "heh he doesn't know how to pronounce Gaussian (Gauze-Ian)" and told my mates/colleagues sitting by me. They all laughed and said well that's not how you say it either and then everyone in the studio argued!

My graph editor looks completley different, after setting keyframes. It forms upside down U shape. Any idea how to fix it?
I had the same problem. Found out that AE's default is the speed graph, right click the graph and click value graph.
