IndyCar at Texas: 25 Year Highlights

- Throughout the 2000s, Texas had the 2nd biggest crowd on the IndyCar schedule. A track so popular, it had two races for several years. The sparks from the cars and the flashbulbs from 100,000 fans capturing photo finishes made it a popular stop for open-wheel cars. 2021 marked the 25th year for IndyCar at the track, here are some of the action-filled highlights of those skilled drivers at Texas Motor Speedway.

And now we have Sunday's finish to add to this. You cannot be a motorsport fan if you aren't entertained with what IndyCar has put out there
It makes me extremely happy that this year's race lived up to the track's former reputation, and not what we saw in 2020 and 2021.
Did you go to this years race? I had a whole trip lined up in 2020 when COVID screwed it all up. It seems like a cool place. Debating to go to Iowa or Gateway in the future now that Texas is off the calendar next year. Would like to see the series go back to Phoenix as well.
I've had the privilege of attending two of these races in my lifetime, and there is nothing like it. The sense of speed these cars give on a 1.5 mile track is unmatched. As a kid it always seemed to me that these cars were just on the edge of taking flight they were going so fast.
RIP Justin Wilson. What a win
Watching this video it makes you wonder how we get less and less ovals in the series. A real shame
Fair point, but ironically enough this video also does a really good job of explaining why there aren't as many speedway ovals in the series. The danger factor that comes with those speeds is pretty intense. Let's not forget Kenny Brack's accident, here...
@@mitchell-wallisforce7859 I know nascarman intentionally tries to avoid "glorifying crashes" by featuring them, but if this included some of the crashes that have happened at Texas over the years, it would be much easier to show why the series has been shying away from ovals, especially after Vegas 2011. Yes, there's a massive "thrill" of the racing IndyCar puts on there, but it can also be some of the most terrifying stuff I've ever seen.
@@mitchell-wallisforce7859 so where’s the balance of “racing being dangerous” and continuing to go to these road courses that go green flag to flag and the leader wins by a quarter of a lap? I’m a causal Indy fan but always tune in for the ovals
@@demonracer2 First of all, let me correct an error - the danger factor only really applies to the speedways. The short tracks dodge this issue and I'm a little perplexed as to why there aren't more of those.
Secondly, the reason I mention danger with regard to speedways is because, even after those atrocious pack races were resigned to the pages of history, there were still more than a few ugly accidents (chief among which being the one that cost Robert Wickens his legs). Unless IndyCar is absolutely confident that an accident like that won't happen again, I don't expect them to make anything other than baby steps back toward speedways.
I’m glad you included Texas 2010. Danica gets a bad rap from racing fans but that IMO was her best ever performance.
damn, made me sad how immediately the quality of racing just dropped off. Hoping for Texas to one day return to it's former glory
well nascar added the pj1 so i'm gonna say never, but its looking like this next race will be the last and indycar will be going back to the Milwaukee mile.
@@ZIGAG1999 as long as it's another oval. I used to go to TMS every year but moved away recently and it's nowhere near the same on tv the last couple years.
Sunday's race was won through the final turn on the last lap by a car legnth
@@DJDouglasWarden oh trust me I saw, seems like a step in the right direction
@@joseph6270 it was definitely a step in the right direction, but it took adding a shitload of downforce to the cars every year since '18 after the whole point of the current iteration of the chassis was to get rid of all the downforce the aero kits generated
Never get tired of watching A.J. Smacking around a Gosh Dang Ferner. Even if I really do like The Flying Dutchman a lot.
Why did AJ even do that?
25 years of marriage between Indycar and Texas Motor Speedway will be end this Sunday. The glory days of racing like this is gone. 😞😞😞
there is more coming in 2023-2030
Man I really Wish INDYCAR Wasn’t Potentially Leaving after this year.So Much History and Great Moments and Racing,I know the last couple of years Haven’t Been as good as the Glory years of the 2000’s,but it’s still been pretty good,Last Years 2nd Race was pretty good and Entertaining. But the Damn PJ1 Ruined Everything Thanks To Nascar.
1:11 Now THAT'S a bitch slap if I've ever heard one.
I been to four Indycar races at TMS. If its the end its a fun wild 25 years at this track. I will miss it because its the closest track Indycar race at within a driving distance. Once its removed I'm forced to fly out for an Indycar race
You should have included the clip of Josef Newgarden’s crash with Conor Daly where Josef nearly died, and then followed it immediately with the clip of him winning. That was one of my favorite wins ever.
Bro you are awesome at editing videos
From Texas to Tesucks
I vote IndyCar at COTA AKA "The Blade"
did you get me?
@@manuelgrothe608 it'll be the milwaukee mile
... and the wisdom to know the difference.
@@GregBrownsWorldORacing thank you
The 2018 and 2019 races really drove home how good the basic bones of this track were - and still are - for IndyCar racing. I bag on this place a lot but some of that racing was truly knife-edge, high-quality sporting action.
If and when NASCAR's PJ1 fad dies out, I hope to witness a return - and a return to form - for Texas Motor Speedway. Until then, see you later cowboy.
the real highlight is watching the crowd get smaller and smaller every year.
Time for a Chicagoland Speedway hype reel.
Man I really hope the 30 minute rubber-down practice session helps make this a multi groove track again. Impressive how badly applying what’s supposed to be a traction compound kills all but the untreated groove
Man I miss good quality open wheel oval racing
This is kind of a sad video used to get 90,000 to 100,000 fans at this race now barely anyone in the grandstands and this years Indy Car race at Texas was awesome as well. The product is good and worth watching. I understand they screwed up the paving on the track so it isn't as easy to pass as it used to be but still exciting racing at this track.
and another amazingly close awesome race in 2022!!!!
☮️❤️🎵🌍🤗🏁
Texas is great
That’s a hype video, right there!
Fantastic !
it wasnt shown here, but does anyone remember the summer race in the early 2000's when Scott Sharp split two wrecking indy drivers on the final lap and took the checkered flag?!? jack sprague won in the trucks the same weekend and i was pulling for both drivers at a mere 8 years old.. too fucking thrilling for a young race fan!!!!
🙏🏻
Thanks For Uploading ☺😎
what race is the "3 abreast this, isnt gonna work" "yes it did" from
June 2001 race with 11 laps to go
25 years of Texas hopefully it the last one cause the Milwaukee mile needs to be there
Sad for TMS. But probably glad for the Milwaukee Mile
@@DiegoOspina86 not glad for milwaukee is people don't buy tickets for that one either
As a Gemini I seem to always respond to either/ors with "Why not both?" It's also important to ask "What else have you got"?
Ah the VS era.......I almost forgot it
Sad that IndyCar went the F1 lite direction instead of keep this type of exciting racing. No road/street racing comes close to this.
I think outside of Indy 500 ovals do not bring fans and tv ratings. St Peters was a big hit with large crowds and full blown road schedule minus Indy 500 is probably the future. I was a big nascar guy growing up and guess which races i made sure to watch besides Daytona/Indy? The road courses.
What a shame,. Such great tradition there, used to pack them in. Now the future is in doubt,. And that stupid NASCAR compound out on the track deters from great racing.
IndyCar Removal of Texas Schedule and IndyCar Add Back Tracks COTA in Austin TX Richmond Night Race Milwaukee Mile Surfers Paradise Street Circuit in Australia and Homestead-Miami Speedway Night Race and Championship Finale and IndyCar add tracks Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City and Charlotte Roval since 1999 IndyCar was racing at Charlotte Oval before got cancelled of Charlotte because Three spectators were killed by the flying debris and IndyCar will return to Charlotte and become of Roval Tracks for Safety Tracks at Charlotte and 22 Race for 2023 IndyCar.
I vote CMS, AMS, NHMS, KS, SR, LVMS, NS, DMS, and IndyCar at Bristol Motor Speedway
No Vegas, are you delusional?
Kentucky is garbage. Atlanta is a Superspeedway ripoff. Bristol, come on man. That ain’t happening lol. Also IndyCar Racing at Sonoma sucks.
@@IanTheMotorsportsMan_YT It is the truth
@@manuelgrothe608 your “truth” is dumb
@@IanTheMotorsportsMan_YT Prove it
@@manuelgrothe608 I explained it to you on my other reply
Who was that who AJ Foyt slapped😂? And why?
AJ slapped Arie Luyendyk, because they didn't agree on who won the race. AJ's driver was Billy Boat.
@@BSNFabricating In the end, Luyendyk got the last laugh, as he was discovered to have finished one lap ahead of everyone.
@@areasevenpro The Texas finish, along with a late-race mix-up involving a restart at the Indy 500 (also won by Luyendyk) is what led to the IRL cutting ties with USAC.
Yeah, AJ said some nonsense that Arie was "Messin with Texas" when that phrase was a thing. AJ's a legend, but sometimes he can/could be a real jerk.
Indycar needs more ovals, Texas is no longer one of them.
well the rumor is this is the last race and the milwaukee mile is returning.
It's still NASCAR's pet now
Killed the track. Why wont promoters listen to the fans? Atlanta is better and alot like old texas I think
Wait what's happening???
I think it was Ken Schrader who had a minor mechanical at the beginning of a 500 or maybe even the 600 - Baking Summer race, he was 12-25 laps down, no hope of finishing much higher than 38th... The pit reporter asked "Kenny, are they going to get the car fixed so you can Get Back Out There"? He shook his head and said "Unfortunately, Yes" :D
Went form one of the best races on the calendar to an absolute snooze fest.
This didn’t age well
@@joshjarnagin3161 How? Today's race doesn't erase the absolute dumpster fire that has been this race for the past ~4 years (plus, as good as this race was, it was still much less exciting than the race was pre-PJ1).
Although modern-Texas sucks, these wonderful memories will last a lifetime.
But I personally hope that Sunday is the last ever IndyCar race at Texas.
Nascar ruins everything they touch
I say Religion does... Some will claim NASCAR is a religion too.
Thanks, crapcar. Only they could turn the best 1.5 mile Indycar track to a crap fest for all racing series.
They said it, but Eddie Gossage had to sign the check... It's hard to remember a time when Texas wasn't removing, repaving, extending or applying something for many years in a row. Bruton, you kill Rockingham & Wilkesboro for NHMS and this :No Limits" Shit show... and now the series is leaving You... I know he'll cry all the way to the bank... But I like when KARMA happens in real time.
Good that you made this video so that millenials can see what indycar used to be and stop drooling over this modern crap with bunch of spoiled kids racing.
Found the boomer lol
Yes. A proud boomer.
Millennials are literally 40 years old now
You mean the shitty IRL pack racing or.....
The youngest millennials are 27 years old, pal.
