How To Tackle Premature Ageing with Redness + Rosacea | Dr Sam Bunting

  • It’s really common to fall into the trap of thinking that actives to treat premature aging aren’t for you when you have rosacea. But it doesn’t have to be the case. And in many ways, they’re much needed in the typical rosacea patient with light skin who’s very much at risk of premature ageing, with fine lines, uneven skin tone and texture and loss of elasticity.
I have lots of patients who are pleasantly surprised by how far beyond simple rosacea treatment we can go. And let's face it, its human nature. Once you solve one issue, we so often find ourselves moving on to the next!
And when it comes to my own skin journey, I’ve learnt to anchor my maintenance routine on a few really key ingredients whilst still respecting my skin’s desire to redden unpredictably and I’ll share my favourites as we go.
So let's go through the routine step by step.
As always thank you so much for watching and for all your support!

A tip for those with extremely sensitive skin that doesn't even can tolerate straight azealic acid: the Geek&Gorgeous aPad Serum. It contains a azealic acid derivate and really made a difference for me. I think it's a great start for those who can't tolerate anything.

I use azelaic acid, niacinamde, a low dose retinol and 6%mandelic acid, but have never been able to tolerate Vit C. What antioxidant can I use as an alternative? I have my redness under control, but every time I try Vit C my skin freaks out. I have both ocular and ERT rosacea, not papulopustar, so acne and bumps are not an issue.

This is so ironic, niacinamide and azelaic are two of my worst triggers (and mechanical exfoliation.) 10% niacinamide is pure hellfire on my skin, and combined with azelaic .... You can almost hear the Prodigy's "Firestarter". >< I have no issues with any AHA's, not even high strength in office peels, and 0.05% tretinoin is just a walk in the park.
Diluting niacinamide down to about 5% in the evening and 2-3% in the morning works fine for me, and after i started using Apothaka's "Skin Quenching light moisturiser: urea, sodium PCA & ceramide complex" before Azelaic (Finacea 15%) is working like a charm!

Extremely useful! Many thanks; really grateful for your taking the time to adress this topic! It is indeed not discussed a lot. Curious however how it seems like you don't refer to azelaic acid as a treatment for rosacea flareups, but rather an ingredient to help in the management of it. Is my understanding correct that azelaic acid doesn't help much during flareups but rather in the aftermath of them?

My skin HATES hylauronic acid. Not matter how occlusive of a moisturizer i put on top of it or it's in it dehydrates my skin like crazy, and I've tried a couple different products and forms. Glycerin is so much better.

As by dr v it is very important to top up moisturizer after using hylauronic acid. Otherwise it dries up the skin. Hylauronic sucks up water, if not using fatty or good moisturizer it will suck up water from skin and that leads to dryness.

Hi yall..I have very dry/ rosacea/ seborrheic dermatitis on my face and my dermatologist has me mix in am soolantra with vaseline mixture is tsp of soolantra to 1/2 tsp of vaseline but I found it was drying my skin so I added medical grade hyaluronic acid that is formulated by my dermatologist I only add a drop then I goin in which super rich moisturizer that has alot of good ingredients also formulated by my dermatologist then sun screen tinted 50spf my skin stays hydrated...at night I use ketoconozole qith vaseline 50/ 50 but I use vitamin c cream with a drop of hyaluronic acid then ketoconozole qith vaseline 50/ 50 then super rich moisturizer with 2 drops hyaluronic acid I use retinol around my eyes...only time I can use retinol is summer and I have ro go extremely slow like once a wk for 2 wks then twice a wk for 2 wks and continue till I know how much my skin can take my derm told me that 3 times a wk is actually good enough to reap the benefits because hers products are medical grade and I start on lowest strength only use it when my skin isn't all flared up.....I feel for u ladies that suffer from rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis because it's very very tricky on how to use products I think God he lead me to a knowledgeable dermatologist who knows what to do and how to keep my skin under control ive delt qith this since 2008 and u can't tell I have rosace or seborrheic dermatitis unless I get flared up....stress is a culprit for me and with cooler weather my seborrheic dermatitis flares up at times...im 48 and I don't have no wrinkles around my eyes or on my face I also use Cerave hydrating cleasner night only splash water in morning when I cleanse my face I use cotton rounds and go gently to get of excess moisturizer and sunscreen.....Its hard thing to have skin troubles it does get depressing at times cuz I see ladies who are my age and look so amazing and can use what ever that want why we rosacea suffers have to deal with this but God helps me through it and he had healed my skin more then what it used to be its on God's time....so God bless yall

hi there! wondering what your thoughts are on the below...something I've heard in passing and the quote I found sums up my concerns with retinol use. I've recently realized I have rosacea and your videos have been helpful!
"And there's another reason to be wary of retinol overuse, according to Patterson. Cells generally divide to grow and repair the tissue in your body, but normal cells can only divide a finite number of times (about 50, according to the Hayflick Limit), which is one of the primary reasons we age.
"We don't live forever," he told Business Insider. "So if you plaster way too much retinol on in your 20s, 30s, and 40s, you could be depleting all of those healthy cell divisions that you really should be storing for cell divisions further down your lifetime."

The best thing I’ve done is to stop using products. Slash your face with water in the morning, use a little Nivea or plain moisturiser and don’t do anything else! My skin tone evened out after 2-3 days of just leaving it alone. Soon as I washed it with a face wash (to remove makeup) and used serums and multiple creams, it became red again.

Yeah we all know that we should do these things in an ideal world. We are here for Dr Bunting’s advice, you don’t need to add to that for attention.

Another great informative video. I recently started using Emepelle in the am. Can I use Azelaic Acid with it?

I have menopausal acne in the perioral area, with clusters of spots that haven't changed in months. On a background of rosacea. Any advice for skincare on a budget? Thank you.

My Gossamer packaging is flawed. It often does not spit out the product. Does anyone else experience this? If so, how do you fix it?

@@sarahweston5948 guessing you didn’t find a solution. I’m glad you like the product. I am not in love with it, unfortunately. Firstly, I hate that I have to use 6 pumps (how expensive) for my whole face. Second, it’s too thick for my preference. I still love my Elta MD UV Clear; I just add a matte foundation (CT Airbrush Flawless) and it gives me a gorgeous skin like finish. I love her Brightly and Nightly serums and both the regular and light moisturizers though :)
