Oh I’m so sorry. I’m on my third home. I learned with the first and bought everything second hand. The second I took my time. Each one is different and tells you what it wants to be. I think the issue is that most people want their home to look a certain way but don’t look at the home they actually have. The home picks the way it wants to look. It’s the architecture, the finishes, the light, the BONES. You have to decide how to use your very best taste to get it there.
I never buy anything twice. I don’t buy until it’s exactly what I want. No temporary stuff. Just live without until it’s right. Save the money for what you want.
I say this in an empty home waiting months for purchase I have already made simply because everything I want is short supply. Literally waiting for things until October 😂😂😂
@@apriljohnson1067 I agree 100%. Recently downsized from a big traditional/transitional house that I decorated and loved to a gorgeous townhouse (that fits where I am in life now) but in a completely different style.
Things will be adapted a little at a time, rushing means you make mistakes
literally me with my dresser that’s halfway put together and literally impossible to finish putting together. i desperately wish i had the money i wasted buying it LOL
I mean this is how it is really when you keep going down the rabbit hole of all the trendy decor. That’s why now I like curating pieces that I think look more classic (fingers crossed lol).

I happened upon your channel about a week ago, and I've been catching up on older videos as well as the more recent ones. Our style preferences are miles apart, and I don't agree with everything, but, in general, your design tips are spot on. I was a design consultant/soft goods specialist for years, and I still love that world. You connect in a fun, energetic way and I love it! And if the dogs show up, it's a bonus!
Totally agree about not settling! My bay window in my room has been empty, and I’ve been tempted soo many times to buy something that would just be functional and not too expensive to fill up the space! But I’m glad I’m able to stop myself every time! I will keep saving up for my small marble table I’ve been dreaming from Cb2!

Yup. Flash in the pan trend. Any fabric like that gets dirty and matted. Plus it's just going to date your furniture because it's not going to be cool next year. Pillow, blanket, yes. $3000 couch, no.

The minute I saw boucle, I absolutely hated it and can’t wait for the trend to go away. Grab a boucle pillow at most if you are into it. It will be out as fast as it came in. Super cringe piece.

Being able to delay gratification (patience) is a sign of being an adult. However, we all still carry that child in us that wants things settled NOW! It is really amazing to hear you take responsibility for what you consider mistakes. We all make them. It takes a strong person to own them and show vulnerability. Arvin, you just said it! "There's a lot of boucle happening NOW." Boucle is a trend just like the hairy stool. Stop buying trends and stop being influenced by these "influencers". Just buy classic timeless pieces and you wont be wasting your money.
I don’t think Alvin is a real interior designer! He is a fashion designer doing up his home and maybe friends home! He is the typical fashion addict! An interior designer tackles the whole space in one go! You never ever decorate as you go without a concept in mind! That farmhouse table will never ever work with those mid century chairs! It could have worked when dark stained.
There is more to interior design than someone’s taste and style in dressing!
I see a lot of BS on UA-cam, a lot of “Pixies” calling themselves interior designers but just showing off their brand new dresses! An interior designer is on site with a Hi-vis vest and a helmet! I love Alvin and his sarcasm, he has style but lacks the in-depth knowledge. When he gets that , there will be fewer mistakes in his choices.

And, I actually enjoy a good Boucle BUT only on smaller pieces like clothing, pillows etc. I cannot imagine that Boucle would be great on a couch as it probably “wears out” quite quickly.
Anything that has as much texture as boucle will capture dirt and hold onto it forever. You will end up being ashamed of the sofa and rue the day that it came into your home. Like Susan said, "Go for the boucle accessories."

Travertine is an ancient Roman classic--maybe it's good to have a piece in your home made of it--it surely would stand out from your other pieces.

Arvin, don’t say you wish you didn’t buy it. Just like fashion, interior design changes. Sometimes quickly and most times you have a 3-5 year lifespan on most items. When you go to purchase something, divide the price by the number of years you want to keep it. If it makes financial sense, if you can revamp it with some paint and new baubles, then it is a good price for you to warrant spending. Don’t say you regret it, just say you outgrew the style and sell it. Use the proceeds to purchase something new
But if we all think like that the waste will be crazy. Fashion waste is already a big problem. I love trendy furniture! But always restrain myself from buying them. Nowadays before buying furniture I always try to think like whether it will last for a long long time and whether people will buy it if it end up in thrift store.
I love everything you have. The way I see it we learn and we grow by our mistakes but never less. You have to remember to stay awesome

I added 1/4 inch marble on my exact table and it looks amazing…. It mimics the potterybarn wooden table with marble top.
Boucle will go out of favor as quickly as the hairy furniture. Furry furniture is not that different! Don't get the couch. I'm not kidding. Don’t do it. 👎

I don't mind the look of boucle, but I get the feeling that kind of fuzzy fabric will look rough/worn out in a fairly short period of time. Not a good fabric for high traffic items like couches.
I think boucle will be looking dated soon. Just like a granny's jacket.
Boucle with a pet, not a good idea, unless it's something you can toss in the wash. Everything sticks to it.

Hey - you've got to get some of those furniture glider things - they come in many shapes and sizes - you slip it under that marble pedestal and it will easily move - I've used them for years - with huge/heavy pieces and they are a lifesaver.

Love boucle, but it’s everywhere right now which means most design-forward people are going to move on soon. It’s okay using it, but definitely find the less textured kind versus the kind that looks similar to sherpa for longer staying power.

I like boucle but I think it is too trendy right now for it to be a timeless, and it will look pretty dated in a couple years...maybe get smaller items in boucle, like replace the hairy ottoman with a boucle ottoman, and steer away from the whole boucle couch.
Agreed! I didn't even know it was trendy but I bought a boucle ottoman for my accent chair in my master bedroom. Looks great and not overwhelming.
