  • This video was taken on approach and landing at Pittsburgh International Airport in April of 2015. As the video starts, we are flying up the Ohio River with a few power plants and smaller communities in view. We then turn to the east and flew over the rolling hills of western Pennsylvania and to the south of Pittsburgh International Airport. Next we flew along Interstate 376 towards downtown Pittsburgh, with the Ohio River in the background. After passing the Interstate 79 and 376 interchange, we flew over the neighborhoods of Carnegie and Green Tree. While still flying over the south hills we got a great view of downtown Pittsburgh and Mt. Washington. Next we turned and flew over Pittsburgh’s South side, the Monongahela River, downtown Pittsburgh, the Allegheny River, and Pittsburgh’s North side. Lots of great views of the rivers, buildings, bridges and stadiums (PNC Park and Heinz Field). As we turn over the North side, we got an awesome view of Pittsburgh, looking up the Ohio River. We then flew over back towards the airport, over Pittsburgh’s western suburbs, and by the 171st Air Refueling Wing and several KC-135 as we landed.

    I can't tell you how this view used to put a lump in my throat each time I flew home to Pittsburgh from Tinker AFB/Oklahoma....this view, and the view coming out of the Fty. Pitt tunnel into the city....yeah, baby, I'm HOME>>>>>>

    Took me a minute to get myself oriented but the power plant seen at the opening of the video is the Cardinal power plant ("far side" of the Ohio from the POV of the aircraft) which is downstream from Wellsburg eastern shore of the Ohio. After the turn east Pittsburgh International Airport comes into view around 03:05. At 04:25 the intersection of the I79 and 376 is visible with the prominent loops. Shortly after that the area of Eat Carnegie comes into view

    The odd thing about watching this video is that I never really consciously noticed that as the video progressed, the plane was flying lower and lower. It was only until the last few minutes that I realized, "Wow, those houses look bigger than the ones miles back!" Great video! I've watched it several times, and each viewing I notice something different.

      Looks like they flew in from the west but had to circle around to land from the east. Planes were probably lined up to take off to the west.

    If you freeze it at 4:50 you will see the Chartiers Cemetery and the Greentree water tower.

    • @HerminiePA
      @HerminiePA 4 роки тому

      @Gabriel Gutierrez i first knew where I was at 2:45 where you see the old intersection of the Pennsylvania turnpike with HWY 51. Today there is a bridge across the whole way, but in 2015 it looked like that.

    • @HerminiePA
      @HerminiePA 4 роки тому

      Then at 3:52 you see the Allegheny Airport with Lebanon Church Road extending down the hill from the end of the major runway.

    • @HerminiePA
      @HerminiePA 4 роки тому

      I don't know how they got so quickly over Greentree, but Mt Washington is obvious, and it is normal for aircraft to make the turn over downtown.

    • @HerminiePA
      @HerminiePA 4 роки тому

      At 10:03 you may see the FAA radar on the horizon. It looks like a big golf ball up close, but I can't tell if that is a water tower or a radar atop a concrete building. It is approximately where the radar should be.

    • @HerminiePA
      @HerminiePA 4 роки тому

      @Gabriel Gutierrez At 2:02 you see the Finleyville Airport. HWY 88 is nearby but it is dwarfed by the Mon-Fayette Expressway a little more to the east. The jet starts a gentle turn and you miss seeing the river.

      Usually true although sometimes they'll have the plane stay further north or south and then turn to land from the west. This video was the opposite with a plane from the west looping to land from the east.

    At the 7:24 mark the golf course looking land up top center is Highwood and Uniondale cemeteries. The big road on the left is part of Perrysville. At the bottom of the screen is Riverveiw Park. Lol when I clicked to watch this I didn't expect to see my neighborhood.
